The Silas Deane Highway is home to several (and I mean several) liquor stores. The problem is that…read more(1) the majority of them sell your standard mass produced wine and beer; (2) the owners have both a limited knowledge of their product and (3) they are unwilling to venture out and carry a larger selection local (state/region) wine, beer and spirits. I will admit to patronizing several of them, but my search for a local liquor store as ceased with the discovery (and more frequent patronization) of Townline Discount Wines & Liquors, which surpasses them all. Yes, they carry a wide range of mass produced wine, beer, and spirits but they also carry some unique selections, all at competitive prices. They also have a good selection of local, craft and small batch beer (which I appreciate more and more). In addition to the selection, they get high marks from me for their customer service. The owners have always been very friendly, helpful, and accommodating, even going as far as to offer to purchase a varietal of wine not on their shelves. Now that's customer service!

The moment I set foot inside, I could tell this place was different from other brew hobby shops. First of all, this guy makes no mistake letting you know he knows how to craft a good brew. The walls are covered in ribbons from competitions that he won. I didn't even bother counting. There must be over 300 of them from all over the country. However, you would never know it from Paul's personality. He was gracious and rather humble considering the amount of success he has had. I explored his shop and just totally "geeked out" over the stuff he has. His prices are very reasonable and he is full of great advice. I don't live in the area but I would make the hour drive to Willimantic anytime I want to upgrade my equipment or get some great brewing advice. Make sure you call ahead because his hours are not always the best but this reason alone is not enough to justify giving this shop any less than 5 stars.

They have a gr8 selection of beer and wine and I find the selection and prices to be comparatively cheaper than the liquor store in my neighborhood. So, I relied on the knowledgeable staff there to help me find one that was more palatable for her and another that would pair well with our dinner. Oh! They were so helpful. Again, the selection for craft beer and wine is very good. However, Kay won't let me pick my own beer. It's either an awkward battle or you just go with it. I spent $49 on two 4 packs of IPAs and they are only ok. Of course you don't know what you're spending until they ring you up.
