Hmmm. This is a toughie ... The concept of this store is great. Who wouldn't like to own a piece of The Saint Regis, The Plaza, Waldorf Astoria, etc.? As someone who frequently stays at hotels, I actually recognized a few of the pieces. You also have Courtyard by Marriott, Holiday Inn, Crowne Plaza, etc. hotels mixed in so it's not all high end stuff. Hotel furniture is sturdy, well made and generally safer than other furniture. However, it's often replaced because it looks like it's been ridden hard. I recently took a new job and was given a big office, which I am hardly ever in, so I had to decorate it. I didn't want to spend a lot on high end stuff but did want to impress the few clients I meet there so this seemed like an interesting option vs. IKEA or Savvieh The downside ... Disorganization. Hardly anything was marked with a price. After 5+times of asking how much something was, I gave up and found myself only shopping the things with price tags (about 40% of items). I fully expected this to be a warehouse type of place and it seems a lot of the bad reviewers are expecting a furniture type store's clean and tidy environment. It's a grungy warehouse, which I expected going in. Hello ... Liquidator? Don't expect Jordan's Furniture, folks. Having said that ... Lots of the pieces are stained, knicked, scratched or worse. There is very few furniture that looks pristine and the pieces that do look good have hold tags taped to them. Plants? You have to plan to spend some time there sifting through stuff to find pieces in good/acceptable condition. But when you do come across something ... the price is right. While I only walked away with a huge framed piece of artwork from the Waldorf Astoria Towers ($30) and a stand lamp ($20) from an unknown hotel ... there were a few things that I probably would have put in my dorm room in college years ago. None of the chairs, couches, night stands were of the condition or style I'd consider but the lamps and artwork were great. They had several large, framed black and white glamour portraits of models from the 1920s and 30s for $20 each. You'd easily pay $100-$300 for each of these if you were an interior designer. Not my style but a hairdresser or female might like them for their decor. The guy working there was friendly and helpful. Unlike the Pottery Barn where nothing ever looks as good in your home as it did in the store, the rough condition of the warehouse makes things look a lot better when you get them into your home. Go for the artwork alone ... although it would be nice if more stuff had a price tag. I won't be a regular but it was a fun experience ... although the commercial on their website makes it seem a lot better than it is in real life. We took a long trip down to New Haven to go to IKEA, and stopped by Universal Hotel Liquidators as well. I'd heard of them a couple of years ago, and had kept up with their website and Facebook pages. Their website looks great, the furniture is organized, clean and the place is well lit. There's even some cool video from a local TV show that gets into details about the great furniture and good finds there are. I was pretty impressed, with both their merchandise and their communications via website and social networking. We weren't expecting perfection, but we did expect to find some decent stuff based on the website pictures. Unfortunately, the real life space is very much NOT like the online one. The retail outlet is huge, and items are stacked around in different areas. It was poorly lit, and smelled horrible - a combination of mold, mildew, old cigarettes and chemical residue from industrial cleaners that didn't quite do the job. The upholstered pieces we saw were grubby looking, and many had threadbare spots, and leather ones had tears and major stains. The wooden pieces we saw were all nicked, scratched or downright broken. The pictures were haphazardly stacked and piled together, with most having damaged frames with giant nicks, scratches and cracks. Many of the prints had come dislodged from their backings, and many back covers were torn up. There was a big pile of what looked to be bedspreads, and possibly rugs - it was just dumped on the floor, all tangled together. And the smell got worse the further into the store we went. I gave up when it finally triggered my asthma. Definitely not worth a special trip, and I would say even if you live in the area it's to be avoided. The prices seem very good, but not when the merchandise is so dirty, broken and gross. read more

I'm not sure about these poor reviews. It's a hotel liquidation place. You get what they get. c'mon! It's a treasure hunt. Sometime you strike pay dirt sometimes you don't. You need to go in with an open mind and make at least 3 rounds because you won't be able to take in everything at once. We found a killer mirror from the Waldorf Astoria for 39 bucks! They had many and some were damaged. You have to keep a keen eye. We also bought a marble topped entry table. It's so AWESOME! It's from another swanky hotel in Manhattan but I can't recall the name. The table was ivory and the top was beige totally 90's but we spray painted the bottom black and now it's updated and gorgeous. They have a ton of art pieces and we needed a large frame. So we bought a 5ft x 4ft picture for 29 dollars. You will never be able to find a frame that size for that price. If you are coming here to outfit an entire room- don't. This place is to find special pieces to fit around your already cool place. You also have to keep in mind- they take it all out of the hotel. Some pieces are awesome and others in the lot were in the busy part of the hotel. Think about it- how gentle are you on hotel room stuff? The hotels they get the stuff from also run the gamut. Your going to see 2 star hotel stuff and 5 Star. I'm definitely coming back, but I'm not telling my friends. I don't want them buying up the place. read more

I have shopped Hotel Liquidators for well over 15 plus years in the New Haven area where we needed umbrellas to shop. It is normally a HIT OR MISS, but when you hit, you can hit the JACKPOT. I have purchase pieces for every room in my home. A few of my rooms resembles a 5 Star Hotel. Other pieces makes my rooms unique and sophisticated and I NEVER have to assemble any furniture. (Sorry IKEA) Headboards, lamps, side tables, bookcases, coffee tables, sleeper sofa, curtains, clocks, dishes, marble, armoires & wardrobes, safes, televisions, mirrors, pictures, outdoor patio furniture, cushions, loveseats, rugs, dressers, accent chairs, ottomans, office furniture, and just stuff. The quality is commercial grade so there is no concerns of items breaking of falling apart. I shopped for my personal use, work related, and a home makeover project with my church. Sometimes a little imagination, spray paint or dusting off is all what is needed. This place was my college children oasis. We just moved to New Haven and the idea of buying used stuff from a hotel liquidator was interesting. The quality of the items here varies a lot. You can have very minor scratches on things like headboards, but then find major damage to things like couches. You really have to search to find things that are in decent shape. We ended up buying a dresser and a matching headboard, both of which were in good condition. We paid the $45 for delivery (it's not free), but the delivery service was awful. The truck arrived after calling us twice for directions (we're in New Haven), at which time two teenagers got out of the truck. The scrawny one of the two asked where the items had to be carried. After telling him it was the second floor, he let out a long sigh. He then opened up the back of the truck with his friend and answered a few cellphone texts on the way in the truck. After getting our dresser on the dolly, he lowered it down quickly with one hand on it. The dresser tipped off the dolly when it was lowered and hit the edge of the ramp. This, unfortunately, gave the dresser a few extra scratches. The movers then simply didn't want to carry the dresser up the stairs. It wasn't until I recommended taking out the drawers (to make it lighter) that they carried everything inside. The icing on the cake was the fact that we carried up all the drawers, despite having paid for delivery service. So, based on this and the previous review, my opinions are, as follows: You have to really be careful at this store and, if you shop there, don't use their delivery service. Universal Hotel Liquidators is one of those businesses that needs to be given praise for what they do right. They are taking furniture with half of its useful life left and giving it a chance to be used following its tenure at a hotel. Basically what it sounds like. Old hotels that are getting gutted or revamped and need to get rid of their furniture sell their stuff to UHL. All the furniture & electronics are dirt cheap, and if you're the kind of person who likes to shop for bargains, there are some pretty nice finds. You have to look around, but I've never had bad experiences (I have no knowledge of the company's delivery service). The store a good find for college students who can't afford to shop at Ikea, and there's a lot of solid and usable stuff that would otherwise probably end up clogging landfills. read more

SLEAZY OPERATION - CAVEAT EMPTOR!! While the concept seems interesting, the execution is absolutely disgraceful. This past week, they advertised the contents of a 450 room hotel (Embassy Suites Battery Park City) and offered incredibly low prices on the items: Flat Screen TV's - $139 Sofa Beds - $229 etc We purchased both of these items, and what we got was a TV that did not work (exchanged it for one that is operational, but the missing stand for it - "no problem - go online and you can get one" - does not exist!). We picked out a sofa bed, paid for the one on the sales floor and put a sticker with our name on it. While there are supposedly 200 more in the warehouse, the ones we looked at were mostly in pretty bad condition, while the floor sample was near perfect. This morning, we sent a truck to pick it up and deliver it to our house. When it arrived, my wife noticed that it was torn and in terrible condition. She then went back to the place and noticed that the model on the floor was not the one we saw, so the question was where did that one go? Again, they assured us that we would get that one.... After rummaging through the warehouse with employees who were decidedly unhappy to be assisting her, my wife determined that most of the sofas were in poor condition and that the odds of getting one in acceptable shape were nil. Admittedly, the prices were very good (and another thing, yesterday, our sofa was marked at $229, today the sign read $199 - it was pretty clear that in the bad condition that most of these were in, they weren't going to get full asking price for these), but I think the moral of the story is that if you buy something there, take it with you. It's obvious that even if you pay for something and clearly mark it "sold," the old "possession is 9/10's of the law" adage applies here. One word: sleazy...... read more

My experience was fine. We got two dressers, a beautiful headboard and a couch. For the price we paid they were in excellent shape. The delivery wasn't terrific but my husband took it upon himself to "supervise" the delivery guys so it wasn't too bad. read more

Today I went to Universal Hotel Liquidators.I am fairly new to the area and I needed some furniture for my apartment and i heard this place had some good deals.When I got there I was greeted right away and was asked if i needed any assistance(which I did)so i told the man what I was looking for an he showed a few items in the showroom (which was displayed very nicely)and I picked out some things as we went along.I worked with a guy named Pedro and he helped me with everything I needed whether it be prices or finding things I was looking for he was great. Anyway, I picked out a sofa bed,night stand,a bed and a few other items for my apartment.Everything was great and all in all my day was a success. Pedro and one of his workers loaded everything right there into my UHAUL for me and I didnt have to move a thing.So at the end of the day all I can say is Thank You Universal Hotel Liquidators and I highly recommend this place if you are looking for great quality used furniture! read more
