After reading the response I didn't realize that they do other things for the community but it doesn't change the fact that its too expensive and they don't have membership options where you can just have access to the basics and no need for all the extra fluff to bring up the price. You're better off going to LA Fitness, like 10 mins away, and paying less than half for it; I just don't understand the other reviews where people try to justify the price($80/month 1 person), maybe they never had a good gym before that didn't cost as much and had same/similar amenities? read more

Joined the gym about 6 weeks ago. I wasn't sure I wanted to take on this extra expense but was willing to find out. I cut back on things that I didn't need and put it to better use. This gym is amazing and so well worth it. My boys take swim lessons and love kidmazium so much that after my work out they get upset when we have to leave. The staff is always so nice your greeted with a smile and they're willing to help in any way they can. Upon joining I was given coupons for so many things and visits with a personal trainer to get me started and work with me on my target areas. I recently tried the red zone for boxing and fell in love with it. Latricia is tough but after that 30 minutes your happy you did it. The classes keep me motivated and there's so many to choose from that I feel like there's not enough hours in my evening! So far my favorites are Body Combat with Donna and Body Pump with Beth. I tried Body Attack and will be adding that one too my schedule as well. Ali & Robin make it fun the hour flies by. The gym is huge so there's always equipment available I tend to go on busier times and still never have an issue. If your looking for a real change and a better gym you should definitely look into joining I'm so happy I did. read more

Sorry it's just overpriced and the staff is kind of fake to me and not that great. I did the free things like use a 3 day free pass, come for open house and had coupons for free boxing and yoga classes. It's really hit or miss. I had a yoga class that was a joke and like stretching for an hour. Then I had a yoga class that was fantastic. Food is overpriced and your Membership fees and massage fees are too expensive. The gym I use is much cheaper and has the Same things universal does. The massage wasn't worth the high price. I think it's a nice gym but the pricing is entirely too much. Especially considering the only way you can make it cheaper is if you get a family member to Join with you. 90 a month is almost triple the cost of any other gym. You also aren't aloud to bring guest. I wish they would bring there pricing down to at least 60 a month or made it so you could have friends join for a bundle package. read more

UAC does not follow CoVID-19 safety measures and is currently flouting a shutdown mandated until Jan 4th - Why? "[the owner] can't do that to his employees" as quoted from his responses to other reviewers. I believe he is referring to paying them so I guess it's money over safety?! As a member who went back twice (once to test it out and the second to see if maybe the first time was just a fluke) I saw numerous, mask-less members walking in the hallways, playing basketball and running on the track - All within eyesight of an employee who says nothing and looks the other way. You know, this is a good gym to belong to. Especially so if you have kids. They have lots of activities for kids. Now, since I dont have kids, I find the fact that they are everywhere like someone kicked over an ant hill incredibly irritating. Causing one star to fall earning it 3. Lots of programs, lots of new equipment and they are always putting the profits back into the gym. You can have them bill your credit card every month or work out a payment plan. I have been a regular here for years and it's one of my favorite gyms out there. This place started out as a indoor tennis facility/ fitness center. Now it is 100% fitness center and activities center. I agree with george a. there are a lot of kids here. There is a child care center, so it's a great place for parents to come and work out, plus there are a lot of activities for kids here, especially during the summer, where I believe (at least one type of ) summer camp is taking place all day. In addition to the great cardio machines, each with personal TV they have a swimming pool for laps and free swim, steam room/sauna, basketball court, track and multiple full circuit for lifting. They also offer aerobics and other fitness classes (yoga, body pump, karate, body combat etc) every day. When I am in town, I am a regular at the Body Pump classes and I love going for a swim every now and then. Compared to 24 hour fitness and smaller gyms that I have been to over the years ... I find Universal pretty great. read more

As a 65 year old woman who has never walked into a gym, I wasn't certain this was for me. I have found nothing but welcome. In the past three weeks, I have met with a concierge about what's available, set my goals, received a whole body 3-D scan, had group training sessions and worked with a trainer to learn the fitness machines. I was a member here 5 years ago and quit when I didn't see the value in how much they charged for their membership fee. I went back on a 30 day membership recently and there was not one piece of equipment that was upgraded from 5 years ago. It seems their model is to suck you in with a basic membership fee then pile on additional fees for the classes on the periphery of the main floor. I am not a classes kind of person but I'm sure there is value here for somebody who's willing to pay a lot for average gym services at best. Seems like a very cliquey place with everyone seemingly knowing everyone's business (I used headphones to block this out). I'd rather go back to my Anytime Fitness that has all new equipment, is never crowded, and costs about 1/4 the price of a membership here (full disclosure there is no pool or basketball court). read more

I wish there were 2.5 star option, as there are some good things about this gym. First the bad: For my wife and I to be member's here, it is $110 each month, and that is with a discount because we lived in Village of Olde Hickory. That price is also a discounted rate, because you are locked into a one year contract. When my wife and I moved, we no longer found it efficient to travel to Universal and so tried to cancel, at which point we were told we would have to "buy out" the rest of our contract there (after much time and back-and-forth we were able to get a little discount on the buyout). The other negative thing is the hours. If you are paying over $100 a month, you'd think they could be open 24 hours, or maybe just till 11 or 12. Hours are 5-10 week days, and they close at 7 on the weekends. I understand letting employees have off for evenings and weekends, but some people work weird hours, and would love to be able to work out late at night, or at 4 am. Planet Fitness is $10/mo and open 24/7. Now for the good: This gym has so much equipment, so many classes including karate, biking classes, etc. all included in the membership fee. Also a great pool, basketball court, running track, yoga studio, and more. They cafe is delicious, great healthy smoothie's and healthy options each evening from local cafes and business are featured. Again the cafe is only open from 8:30 to 6:00, so if you wanna grab a smoothie after an 8:00 pm workout, its a no go. Summary: If you are well off, and can afford over $100-$150 a month, then go for it. Endless equipment, basketball, swimming, karate, etc. But to be honest, I've been a member at the Y and other Recreation facilities that are as good, for way less money. And my opinion is, if you're gonna charge over $100/mo at least offer free towels (they're $1 per use) and have better hours. For my wife and I will stay with Planet Fitness or LA Fitness. Cheaper, and open 24/7. read more

My review...TERRIBLE!!! No Stars. Recently I was in town and filled out the paper work for a free 1 day guest pass. I received a call and Greg told me that the guest pass is for locals only. What??? Seriously?? I was actually okay with that...what I wasn't okay with was the fact that he never asked why I wanted to use the fitness center. Was i moving into the area? Was I looking to get a number of corporate memberships? Amazing. I think that is a terrible business model. Why would you prohibit anyone from using a guest pass, especially without asking why they wanted to use the club? I took my business to nearby LA Fitness. They were awesome. They were personable and Jeremy T. was outstanding. They are open longer than Universal and their staff is awesome. If you are new to town and looking for a gym, go to LA Fitness and skip Unversal. read more

This gym is in a converted tennis facility with high ceilings and vast expanses of equipment which can be a bit intimidating. There are also separate rooms with additional equipment. The sheer size of the place and the separation of equipment into smaller rooms makes it difficult to maneuver. Not to mention some of the smaller rooms are on a second floor. Certainly difficult for new comers to navigate. The staff could do a better job of showing you around the first time. In addition to your monthly fee, you get to pay $1 every time you want a towel. Most gyms that charge monthly fees in the range of what Universal charges give you free towels. read more

I'm disabled (MS) and was really concerned about going to a gym. I though it would be an issue if I used my cane or walker in there. However i found that it's not an issue, everyone is willing to help. They have aqau therapy which is great for me with my balance issues. Plenty of recumbent bikes, and circuit training to help strengthen my legs. I'm very comfortable here. The only downside is the price, and the contract. But all classes are included and I plan on continuing to come here! read more

I come here for their Kidsnasium area. For a nominal fee, members and non-members can drop their kids off for two hours of safe, supervised fun with other kids. It includes a basketball court, toys area, and massive tube/ball pit/obstacle course/slide area. Great for raining or cold days when indoor fun is needed! read more

This place is my "home away from home". Everything from the front desk staff to the Kids Klub staff are amazing. I love coming here for some quiet "mama time" to get my cardio on while my daughter exhausts her energy at the kids club. The staff are always smiling, welcoming and enjoyable to talk to. We live 2 minutes from another popular fitness center in Lancaster but I choose to drive the extra commute because Universal is simply worth it. The only complaint I'd give is I wish the women's locker room was updated and in another location. There tends to be a lot of congestion and run-ins with other members upon entering and leaving this locker room. But I am still giving 5 stars but they deserve it :-) read more

Went there for a massage on 12/29/14. Nice place no waiting I did have a appointment. Nicole was my therapist. She was such a nice young lady, pleasant to talk to and very accommodating. Great place for the family. Used to go to another local gym, and their version of "childcare" was a room with a few toys and a tv. Universal offers an amazing indoor playground, along with classes ranging from karate, dance, swim lessons, even cooking classes! I was a member and gave the gym plenty of use. My kids came, they participated in many summer camps. then my schedule changed and I cancelled membership because it was no longer cost effective. My son, when he was old enough, got his own membership (had to pay for a year), went frequently, then he too, cancelled, due to following the path of his friends who went to other gyms. We again cancelled membership. I asked if I could switch membership from him back to me since I had in the past been a member and he no longer wanted to be. I was told no. NEVER AGAIN!We just moved to the area and my friend and I decided to purchase 2 family passes for the day for $80.00 total. We went there to go swimming because they were calling for severe thunderstorms. Never again will we return! No one told us where anything was and the staff is awful. The entire time we were in the pool area, the staff was just staring at us waiting for our children to do something wrong. For being a "kid friendly" place they made all of us feel so uncomfortable we left way before we planned on. This place gets a zero in my book. Absolutely awful staff. This place is all about money. It's like having a car payment. I have been a member for 10 years and when It came time to quit, gave them three weeks notice informing them and they still charged for the next month saying they need 30 day notice. This was after taking close to $240000. Over a 10 year period. Also the karate place my kids ended up getting warts on their feet. When I enquired with other parents several others had the same problem they are obviously not sanitizing the floors and the kids do karate bare foot. Also my son was at kids club and ended up fracturing his arm they made him sit and wait and did not call us to inform of the incident was very unoroffesional. read more

I was harassed by one of their employees. I have been a member of Universal Athletic club since 2001 and I love the place. The trainers are knowledgeable, professional and overall awesome. I was however, bullied and harassed by Ashley. The way she handled the situation was very unprofessional and inappropriate customer service. I have never been treated like this in my whole life. I had brought my son in to the gym because he wanted to hang out with me. He hears me over and over again at home and when we are with other people who are not members of Universal to sign up and join me in classes. He knows how I love going to the classes to work out so he said he wanted to see what goes on. I offered him to play in the Kidmazium, which is a fun place for children but he insisted to see the class. I did not want to disappoint him as not many kids his age would want to hang out with their mom, so he went to the class with me. The instructor was kind and considerate and let him dance with us. We were at the corner away from other members and I supervised him the whole time. Other members were cheering him on and we were all enjoying his presence. At the last 10 minutes of the 1-hour class, Ashley came in and said that he was not allowed in the class. I nodded indicating that I understood what she was saying but did not want to leave while I was having my "workout high" and at this point of the class I was at my momentum and optimum peak, meaning I was sweating really hard and enjoying the benefits of the class. I looked at him and he was enjoying it too. Because he was not bothering anyone and was not in anybody's way and we were at the last minutes of the class, we did not leave. She came back up behind me so I could not move and started to yell, "You have to leave, now!" over and over. She was disruptive and was creating distraction to other members and noticed that the other members were not moving because she was in their way. Because the other members are being affected by her presence on the floor, I took my son's hands and started to leave the room, all the while she walked behind us yelling at us that we should leave. I did not say anything to her because I was afraid to say something I may regret later. My son asked me why she was yelling at us, and I told him we had to leave as I was putting his jacket on. All the while she was still yelling, making sure that other members waiting outside the room for the next class to hear what she was saying. I finally told her to stop, that we are already leaving and she does not need to yell anymore. I asked for her name because she did not introduce herself to me the first time she came up to me. She said, "I'm Ashley, I'm the manager" as if to intimidate me. As my son and I was running away from her, she continued to egg me on to try to instigate an argument, which I was running away from. She continued to yell, asking things like how old my son is, what my name is, all the time while running away from her. Yes I was brisk walking and my son was running. I did this because I was embarrassed that other members are getting uncomfortable with what was going on. I was embarrassed but clearly she was not. She tried to intimidate me, bullied me, and harassed me even after I asked her to stop and even when we were walking (running) away from her. I understand that my son should not have been there, but her behavior is unacceptable, inappropriate and unprofessional. I go to the gym after a full day of work to de-stress and yet Universal has an employee that completely stressed out not just me and my son but worst, other members. Her behavior does not fit in any business establishment that has a great reputation of having great customer service and business model. I am questioning her managerial skills as she does not even have customer skills. If I was embarrassed with how she was being disruptive to other members, why was she not? read more
