    Unitek is always dirty

Unitek CONCORD- There is no communication from management. Most students and staff don't know what's going on most of the time. Instructors are quiting in droves because they are paid horribly, overworked and disrespected. Yet the school continues to add more cohorts with a skeleton crew. They had cut the experienced, full-time instructors down to part-time, took their benefits, then hired fresh, new grad nurses at full-time at lower rates. The instructors are not even required to have teaching credentials or experience as instructors or nurses. As a student, the inconsistencies in instructors and teaching methods mean we teach ourselves. With about half a million dollars worth of tuition in one class, students should not have to teach themselves the material, they should be able to pay the instructors a livable wage, have soap and toilet paper in the bathrooms (many times they don't), afford to turn on the a/c (without complaining about how much it costs), and have someone to clean and disinfect the desks, classrooms and microwaves. Students are bullied by eachother and instructors. Reporting any issues just paints a target on your back. One instructor asked two student's studying in the hallway if they were studying for their "green card", one instructor called an Asian woman "ling ling" because she didn't know her name, she also stated that "Hispanics think being fat is healthy" as part of a cultural lecture. This and more were reported to other instructors and the deans at the time and NOTHING was done. In fact, one dean told a student that, if they were offened THEY should go talk to the instructor themselves. Nursing students must have a certain amount of hours completed per state regulations. The school does not care what reason someone misses class. The issue is, even if they do a required make-up assignment, they don't get the hours back. Even if they come in to make up the time, they don't get the hours back and once you are over in time missed you are thrown out. Students have been in excruciating pain during class but can't leave. Students who miss class due to being hospitalized still lose hours. A student learned her mother had just passed away and was told she could not go home. Unitek does not care about the student's education or well-being. All they care about is money. They will lie and demean anyone for it.

My admissions advisor, Ma'am Marie, guided me through every step of the application process and was always patient, responsive, and willing to answer all of my questions. When I visited the campus for a tour, I was genuinely impressed by the modern facilities and the welcoming environment. Everyone I met was warm, friendly, and professional. I would also like to recognize Sir Jovi, who administered my entrance exam. He made sure the testing room was quiet, comfortable, and conducive to taking the exam. He explained the instructions clearly and helped me feel at ease, allowing me to focus and perform my best. While Gurnick Academy's tuition may be higher than some other schools, the quality of service, professionalism, and dedication of the staff make it a worthwhile investment. Based on my experience so far, I highly recommend Gurnick Academy - Concord to anyone considering pursuing a healthcare career.

This review is for the EKG Technician Continuing Education course, Fall 2025, Concord Campus…read more The EKG Technician course is supposed to be an 11.5-week, 60-hour in-person program with instruction and hands-on lab experience, but the reality has been far from what was advertised, and instead a huge disappointment and waste of time. The start of class was delayed a week with no reason and no proactive communication about logistics - I had to reach out the first day of instruction just to find out which classroom to go to and who the instructor would be. Since then, multiple class sessions were canceled or ended early, and we had only about five hours of actual classroom time instead of the nearly 28 hours we should have had by the end of week 4 (minus four canceled classes). The content itself was very disappointing - mostly reading slides (which were a recap of the textbook) and watching YouTube videos with very limited access to equipment or lab practice (which seemed to be an administrative issue). There was no effort to make up missed time, and it's hard to see how students would reach the advertised 60 hours of instruction, let alone pass the course or pass state certification. The instructor appeared to have good intentions, but it seems this last-minute staffing decision left everyone unprepared, including the instructor themself. Attempts to contact Continuing Education for help went unanswered, which is incredibly frustrating for those of us who paid full fees (over $1,600) and commute long distances to attend. To make matters worse, the Concord campus at that time had poor (no) lighting on the walkway from the parking lot, which is definitely a safety concern for evening classes. Overall, this experience has been unprofessional and discouraging. CSU East Bay Continuing Education really needs to address the lack of communication, instructional quality, equipment availability, and basic campus safety before continuing to offer it. BTW, check your local community college instead if similar courses are offered, it will be A LOT cheaper ($46/unit for Cali residents)!

It's next to a state park or in the middle of it. So, I came here because I thought it was closer. When I was in grad school before, there was a campus in Walnut Creek. It was in the middle of downtown and was quite easily accessible. But this place isn't. And if there is traffic (and there was) look out! I am glad that I don't have to come here regularly because I'd have to get out of work a good two hours before class to get there on time and then drive all of the way home after class. They aren't open on Friday or Saturdays. But I was able to pick up my books. I was going to look for some school swag but they didn't really have any. In the future, I will have my books sent to me to avoid having to come all of the way out here to pick up two books.

Miss Josie thinks highly of herself, which is fine but she doesn't need to remind everyone that she is #1 every single day. She has no problem calling someone stupid or how she likes to say "no coconut meat" or "mulala". She had no shame on calling one of the other students "Mulala" and had no shame on doubting one of the students. She continually would say "I think ____ quit" or "I think ____ isn't going to make it as a CNA" as a teacher it is not your job to doubt a student but to encourage them. Also she can't hear a majority of the time which was quite annoying and $1600+ for the program is too much in my opinion, I did the M-F AM class, it was TORTURE. Be prepared to sit in a small room listening to Miss Josie talk on and on and on, about things that shouldn't even be mentioned in a class, AND about very personal things. The scrubs and handbook and fingerprints not being part of the $1600 price is ridiculous. $1600 is already so much and she's too cheap to include the other important necessities!? We also didn't get a graduation, which is ridiculous, just because we were are small class doesn't make us any less deserving of a graduation, she told us we'd take the final exam and have a graduation just for her to offer us a graduation the next day (after the final exam) which is crazy, we don't have free time we have jobs and school and things we need to do, it could've been planned better. Clinicals was actually pretty great, it was refreshing to not be in a lecture for 8 hours a day. I would think twice before choosing this school, I only chose it because it was closest to me, but I'd definitely choose another school if I could start over. Please choose a school that will pay for you state exams, scrubs, handbook, etc. also it's a bit weird how this school is "SO Great" and "Ms Josie is #1" when there's only 11 google reviews and only 6 yelp reviews when this school has been open since the 90's...makes you really wonder.....let's see how long this post lasts. The other schools rushed their students too much and didn't guide them that well with the process of getting licensed. Vallejo Nursing School is the complete opposite. She provides nourishments to keep our brain active because of the long hours and keeps us entertained along the way during clinicals. She makes all of us feel like a family and all of us were very comfortable with each other considering the amount of days of only getting to know each other. It's as if the place is a safe place to be. And I was there during the peak of the pandemic. Now comes for the hard part, review week and the state exam. Coming to Samuel Merritt was one of the best decisions of my life. There a number of factors of why I chose SMU and why I love it more everyday. First: Why did I choose SMU? - Prior to starting at SMU, I attended SMU's immersion day, countless zoom info sessions, school tours, and meet n greets. When meeting the students and faculty they really made me feel welcomed and supported. I felt like I belonged at SMU and that I wasn't just another person joining a program. I liked watching the current students interact with the faculty. Everyone knew each other's names and talked like old friends. This made me feel excited and comforted when thinking about which university I wanted to choose - Campus is located a short drive away from my family home yet is also far enough away to experience personal growth. The location was ideal for me because I wanted to stay in the bay to be with my friends and family. - Campus is safe. There are many people walking around every day and I haven't heard about any crime on campus. Students, Healthcare workers (Alta Bates), patients, faculty, and security guards are always around. SMU has shuttles to take students to Bart and there is a guarded parking garage. Each building has security and sometimes Oakland police are on campus patroling. - No GRE - Great reputation and alumni I heard that many alumni end up in prestigious hospitals like Stanford Hospital - Many of my old high school classmates came to SMU for various programs and they enjoyed it Second: Why do I love SMU more everyday? - My cohort is amazing!! I truly love all my classmates. We have great respect for each other and we all get along. Outside our individual friend groups within our cohort, we still want to see each other win. Every day we laugh, chat, connect, and grow together. I really love that we all think of each other. Like how we celebrate each others birthdays by signing birthday cards and hanging out after class. - There are many fun events on campus!! We've had multiple fun events throughout the year. Note that each SMU campus have different events. At Oakland campus, so far, I've experienced.. * Free Taco Day * Free Yoga * Free School Supplies * Free Coffee/Tea * Free Gelato * Free Fenton's Ice cream * Free Pantry * Etc... TBD - SMU OT Staff are very supportive and have great personality! Myself and the cohort love the faculty! They bring great energy and want to see us win! Overall, I feel like the program is going by fast because we're having so much fun. Every day is a new experience and I look forward to the rest of my program.
