For us tourists, Montgomery is an hour and 20 minute drive from Birmingham. It's a 2 lane highway…read morewith no traffic. Just trees, trucks and you. Montgomery itself is the capital. There is a Capitol building and a lot of other historic sites to see. I would have rather stayed in Birmingham but I tried it but wasn't anything for me to return to see multiple times.

Oh, Montgomery. You surprised me, and disappointed me at least once. I wasn't sure what to expect…read morewhen I was told that I would be attending a training conference in the city. I knew it was a historic city and wasn't sure how it would display itself to me. Let me get the one, and only disappointment out of the way. The lack of walkability to businesses in the downtown area. When I arrive at my destination I want to be able to run out real quick to a corner store, pharmacy, or small grocery store to pick up some items to tide me over in my room. Or if I was to forget to pack something I would be able to pick it up. A CVS or Walgreens would have been nice to have been able to pop into to grab some drinks and snacks, but that wasn't doable. There is a convenience store on the outskirts of the downtown perimeter, but prepare yourself for a walk. And on top of that, the downtown area, outside of the hotels, is mostly a dead zone. Restaurants aren't always open to allow those visiting to explore different cuisines. What I was surprised with was the amount of culture, history, and personality the city has. I knew what I was taught throughout my years in school and personal research (yes, you should be doing your own research). The amount of history in the city is almost over the top. There are some cities that only one major thing has happened in them. Montgomery has many. The amount of museums and historical places to visit can easily fill up your itinerary. Some of the places are clustered which will make for it to be an easy visit. Others are on the outliers, but, if you are smart, you will jump on a scooter and putter your way to the destination. The people, amazingly polite and up to point out where need to go and suggest where you should go/what to do. I was apprehensive with that, but from my Uber ride from the airport, to strolling the streets, to just interacting at businesses, everyone seemed so nice. I mean, I guess you should, the alternative is to get a beatdown with chair (j/k). Honestly, our Uber driver was amazingly funny about that situation. When he dropped us off at the hotel, he pointed out the area where it happened and told us to give it a visit, but to bring our own chair.
