After checking things out, he said he needed to check with his higher-ups for the next step and then quoted me $1,260 for a waste and overflow replacement, since I declined to have holes cut into the wall -- which would have cost even more. When I suggested they try augering the drain, he told me it wouldn't work and claimed that other plumbers who would do that were "being shady." Because if the auger snake got stuck or was "missing," it could cost an additional $3,000-$4,000, which honestly felt like a scare tactic. Thankfully, I decided to get a second opinion. The next plumber simply augered the line for $180, and everything works perfectly now -- no wall cutting, no extra charges. I'm so glad I didn't let them talk me into unnecessary work. Because of my hard water, the cartridge in the valve was stuck, and with the shaft sheered, I couldn't get a grip on it to pull it out. Clearly it was time to call in an expert... and fast! It took him a bit of time, force, and creativity to finally break the old cartridge loose... but he got it, and we were back in business! I had specifically called Tracy Rooter because I've found with other projects that I strongly prefer working with small local businesses instead of big corporations.
