Getting a haircut can be stressful because you never know if you will get what you ask for. Unique Hair Salon was accommodating, professional, clean, and we'll designed. After work one day, I decided it was time to get a fresh start. The best way to start something new: Change your hair! Because there was no prior planning, I did not have an appointment scheduled and had forgotten to stop by an ATM to withdrawal cash. I had not cut my hair in over a year so I was a less than desirable client for not having my ducks in a row. The staff at Unique Hair Salon did not care about my lack of planning! They allow walk-ins and only had me waiting for 15 minutes before I was in a chair getting the "chop". The hairstylist was friendly and checked several times to ensure she was providing me with the hair cut I wanted. My one requirement: cut off anything that looks dead/damaged. She did exactly as I asked! When she straightened everything out, she checked to make sure the much shorter length would be alright before asking if I wanted a straight cut or layered cut. Once she was finished, I felt 5 pounds lighter and ready to have a fresh start. Despite not having cash on my person, Unique Hair Salon had me covered. They have an ATM located in the rear of the store! I was able to withdraw cash for the service and the tip no problem. I love my haircut and so does my husband! Ephany as they call "EP" stole my bundle and sewd my hair in with 2" of space in between and double wefted. Then blocked me off of everything when asked for a partial refund then proceeded to act like this. She claims to have been working there since she was 15. If your thinking of going here do not you'll waste your money and have this energy around you. They also said they are changing the location to suites in and it's not unique hair salon anymore wich is a lie because they messaged "this is unique hair salon" at first. There's definitely illegal stuff going on here so I get why they tried to cover it up but they need to hire professionals not kids read more

HOW I LEARNED "MASTER STYLIST" IS A MARKETING LABEL People, uhm, it took me about 3 months to cool down from the first (AND LAST) appointment I'll ever have at Unique Hair Salon. I have been let down by DC salons before so its forced me to become great at doing my own hair so I'm not thirstily (yep, its a word today) dependent on a salon for looking good. Which is why the style I got on one faithful Saturday around 3pm did not make it to 11pm the same night. I GLADLY TOOK IT OUT and RE-DID my OWN HAIR. I believe you readers out there are on this site because you're trying to make good judgement calls. Right? You've probably been given a tip or a Google search or Instagram link suggesting a great Master stylist is at this salon. You'll go on Facebook, then look here also and make a "math" judgement call that because there are higher ratings on Facebook for a "Master/Senior Stylist" that these reviews are probably just an unlucky few. PLEASE,PLEASE,PLEASE, with a Southern Honey Butter Biscuit on top DO NOT MAKE THE SAME MISTAKE I DID. These reviews right 'HEYERR' matter. You wanna know how many clues I got that "Master Stylist" is just a Marketing label? Hm? Mkay I'd about 6... and a BONUS YE-uP! SIX! Here they are in order signs that you are NOT DEALING WITH A MASTER STYLIST. 1. BEWARE OF THE VOICE WHO ANSWERS THE PHONE. This person is NOT YOUR STYLIST but this person might let you think she is OR that they are telling your stylist everything you discuss or plan. UHH PEOPLE, This does not happen. I did EVERYTHING in my power to be communicative about what kind of materials to buy or that I'd arrive early (8am!) with hair pre-washed and dried because I had an event to attend at 1pm. Master stylist claimed she was never told. 2. YOU ARRIVE AT 8; The Master Stylist ARRIVES at 10AM! Leaving the Braider bored and trying to provide cover for why the "Master Stylist" is "on her way". 3. BLAMING THE SALON MANAGER /VOICE who answers the phone FOR EVERYTHING GETTING MESSED UP. My only question was, so .... do we also blame the manager for the 2.5 inch canyons between some doubled up rows!!?? When I brought 3 bags of 14 inch hair for a bob!? A BOB, son!!! 4. AFTER YOUR HAIR IS BRAIDED by her instructions, She Announces that your 'leave-out' is TOO MUCH AND TOO LONG for A BOB. REALLY!!??? oH THATS RIGHT I GUESS THERE WAS NO WAY TO CHECK THAT DURING THE FIRST 3 HOURS I WAS SITTING THERE or before my hair was braided when it was in a BLOWN OUT STATE! Hm, I thought Master stylists were good at I dunno, MEASURING BASIC HAIR LENGTH. 5. KNOWING YOUR BRAIDER IS ALLOWED TO USE MINERAL OIL BASED JAM to braid but then you blame $70 A BAG HAIR FOR being OILY AND FLAT STRAIGHT FROM THE BAG. ....cuz that makes sense for a "Master Stylist" to say..... since yknow OIL JUST TRANSFERS TO HAIR inside a bag FROM I dunno THE AIR AND SKY! Master stylists don't usually show you they think you're stupid enough to believe anything. Finally met one. 6. Master Stylist says STORE BOUGHT HAIR DOESNT CURL. Oh that makes sensse... and it has nothing to do with the 8 tablespoons of mineraloil fromsome purple jam in a jar that got transferred to the hair from the BRAIDS. no relation WHATSOEVER. BONUS arguably most supreme sign you're not dealing with an "actual Master Stylist" ... THERE ARE NO OTHER CLIENTS WAITING after YOU. There's no other appointments.... or No other clients waiting to get in that person chair. and AS SOON as she gets your money and you walk to the bathroom to check out all your hair - you come back to make a comment only to find SHE HAS PACKED UP AND IS GONE FOR THE DAY! MASTER STYLIST Game- was no where in sight. AND I DIDNT LEAVE UNTIL 4PM MISSING MY EVENT TOTALLY. Save yourself the trouble people. Please know, a real Master Stylist does none of the above things and quite often uses that "bumper sticker" as really just a work title suggesting time served, I mean uhm, years at just that salon - NOT EXPERTISE OR PROFESSIONAL LEVEL. read more

I had an appointment with Nisha for knotless braids. She waits for me to text her at my scheduled appointment time to tell me she was going to be late, then did not show up at that time either! Prepare for the longest review ever written. Under no circumstances should you come to this salon, EVER. I'm only giving them one star because I have to. I have not been to every hairstylist but I will give you a detailed account of my experience with some stylists as well as management. I found Unique Hair salon through their stylist jemstyles's IG page. When I called they told me to come in so that they could look at my hair (which is on TWA status). Upon entry to the shop I was not greeted immediately. I sat around for a while. One of the stylists sitting off to the corner offered a warm smile and spoke, so that gave me hope. As the manager walked up, she offered no smile or anything. Jem was with a client. I was in a bind and had no time to spare. It seemed as though nobody wanted to deal with me. Teresa finally pawned me off on Dana. We discussed what I wanted and she told me my hair was too short to braid, I had to get a quick weave. I told her I was off to the beauty supply to get some hair. I even called her to confirm a brand I was thinking about buying. When I came back Teresa informed me that Dana had left to run an errand. No one knew when she would be back. Wow. Who skips out on a potential client? Looking back I definitely should have left then but hindsight is 2020. I decided to go with the bubbly stylist who offered the warm smile. (Jenae) I told her what I wanted and she made it happen using the quick weave method. I went to the barber shop to shave down the side although she had offered to cut it. I declined. Everything was a success! My hair was cute, and she had gained a client. It wasn't until 2 weeks later that everything went south. I told her I wanted the exact same style for my birthday (one side shaved) but I wanted the hair colored pink. She agreed and suggested I buy hair from the owner. I inquired about the price and she told me to come in and that she didn't know off hand. Hmm. I come in and the owner isn't there. Instead some girl who looks like the shampoo girl walks over and tells me pretty much for 2 bundles it's going to total $300. I laughed and told her I'd pass. When I finally bought my hair from somewhere else, I told Jenae I would drop the hair off a week in advance for her to put the color in. I show up the day of my birthday and she still had not colored the hair. She tells me she waited because she wasn't sure about the texture. Huh? Ok I guess. While she's perming my side we're taking and she's basically telling me I should have bought hair from them because now my hair might not turn out right. Here comes the bullcrap. If you're a stylist you should be able to work with any texture hair. I'm pressed for time because it is my birthday so whatever. I let it ride. She did not base the sides of my face and the perm burned me. Strike number two. As we're settling back into the chair and she's braiding me up, She asked Teresa if she had pink color in the back. She again began to voice her concerns regarding the texture of my hair saying she didn't know if it would turn out right. Teresa looks dead at her while I'm sitting in the chair and whispers "that's what happens when you purchase bottom of the barrel hair" while sitting dead in my face. "The sad thing is they're paying top dollar for it". Strike three. I should have cursed her out right then and there, but I decided to wait until my hair was finished. How unprofessional can you be? Long story short Jenae tells me the hair can't be lifted anymore and so we can't do pink. The hair comes out this auburn red color that I DID NOT ask for. I'm blown but again pressed for time. I let it ride. She shaves down the side of my head and sends me on my way. I'm talking to Teresa and she apologizes profusely for being so unprofessional and let's me know if there's anything that I need to call her. As I'm checking my reflection in every mirror I'm noticing the shaved half of my head is patchy. Like literally shaved uneven everywhere. I paid $220 for this. I put some eyeliner on it and let it ride. Again. Two weeks later I'm noticing white strands where my shaved side and regular hair meet. I have my sister inspect my weave and hairline. The white strands are my hair follicles being pulled out. She tells me Jenae pulled my hair too tightly. She digs in my cornrows and pulls out a strand of my own hair. She didn't even braid me right. I immediately come in to have my weave uninstalled. When I tell Jenae what the issue is she tells me "girl there is nothing wrong with your hair. Has it been itchy? You might want to get that checked". Are you serious? I didn't press for them to redo my hair because I was so distraught I didn't want anyone else to touch it. Long story short my cornrows was so tight it basically scalped me right in the middle of my head. When I reached out to Teresa on June 21, 2016 to see what could be done, she offered to get back to me. I'm still waiting. Had I taken pictures I would sue them for what they did. read more

This will be my first and last time going to this salon. If this review can save one person I have done my job. I made an appointment on style seat for 4:45pm. For a stylist Dana Falls. I will admit I was five minutes late because I got lost but it's a shame even though I was late for five minutes she was late for a hour. So I decided to leave go and this heffa charged me for leaving. Please be aware of this unprofessional type of organization. It's in the middle of the hood and the evidentiary they perform the same type way. I will be stopping payment on this one you charge me for service not rendered and you was late no mam. This salon is beautiful. It is clean, comfortable and spacious. The décor is nice. There are 8 to 10 flat screens. On Saturdays they offer donuts and coffee. They frequently have customer appreciation days and the stylists seem happy to be there and more importantly, they crank out beautiful hairstyles. (I mean really, that is the whole point...isn't it?) I've been going to Unique Hair Salon for some years now and I'm truly surprised to see such negative reviews about this salon and especially the Manager who I've always seen to be attentive and professional. She's actually quite funny too and the stylists will tell you in a second that she is "The Best!" (Liking who you work for/with does makes for a better working environment.) The shop also sells virgin hair (Brazilian) which I have tried and been hooked ever since, I always get compliments on the hair. I have had absolutely NO problems with tangling or shedding and have been able to re-install 3 times (of course after a good cleaning). After gawking at my hair for weeks my co-worker decided to buy a couple bundles. She used to get her hair from a well-known company for years (she swore she would never leave) but like me, she is now hooked on Unique Hair and so are a couple other ladies in my building. (Hmm, does this spell discount for me?) I've been to 2 of the 15 or so stylists that work there, Sharrelle and Jemi. I haven't had any problems with either of them, in fact, I'm always smiling when I leave and the day after. I adore this shop and the stylists. Now maybe I'm a little bias because I have been going to Unique for a while. I love the quality Brazilian Hair, the hairstyles, the service I receive, the holiday parties and of course the customer appreciation days (The food!) and all without incident. I've seen and experienced more than any one-time visitor and I'm still a fully satisfied patron who will recommend this shop to anyone looking to get a new do. I really hope that the few negative reviews don't deter you from going to Unique. All shops have a temporary problem here or there but this is a great hair salon. Try it for yourself. The following review is my personal experience. I agree with the other review in regards to the receptionist Theresa (unsure if she is the manager) and super tight braids. I have only been to this salon once and will not be returning. The manager is just unpleasant; I always give ppl the benefit eg maybe they were having a bad day, but it sounds like that is just her attitude based on what the other review said and I myself got the same impression. I got a lace frontal install that initially looked okay, but I had to take down after only 4 days b/c the braids just seem to tighten up so much that I had huge sores in my scalp especially around the perimeter. Although my head felt okay when i left the salon, by day 2 of the install it begin to feel like bees were stinging my scalp and by day 4 it was unbearable. So I knew it was doing damage. Just in that little time my edges had thinned out greatly (I am natural with a full head of healthy hair) . I have had sew ins before and only went here b/c I wanted to try the lace frontal install and had seen some really nice pics of styles on IG they showed. I did not notify the salon b/c I was already out of town on vacation when I had to take it down and honestly I didn't think they would do anything (and it looks like i was right based on the other review). I had to borrow one of my friend's wigs. Yikes! Also, the stylist that did my hair made some not so nice comments about her co-workers doing people hair--very unprofessional. I absolutely love this salon. My stylist Ms Angie is always on points with any type of hair. She listens to problems your having and tells what you need to do to get healthy hair. Took my daughter here once and will not be going back. The stylist I had was rude. I guess cause she was ready to leave and didn't want to do my daughter hair. After washing my child's hair she half assed dried it and instantly started to braid it.
