Salon Hairmania - Bulky. Braid downs should connect at the back not at the top. Pieces of hair sticking out from her crochet idea

Sadly a bad experience. I found them online, called ahead regarding natural hair braid down. I…read moreultimately felt I would've had to teach every part of my service to get it done to licensed standard. Of course I don't want to offend so I can't do that, instead "trust" their process. The issues: 1. My wash was not to standard. I did a scratch test & under my nails showed a lot of buildup still. A scalp should be clean after a wash. I told the girl not to be shy to scrub my scalp...I was only saying it once; I don't think she is licensed. 2. The braid down was horrendous, questionable, laughable. She "finished" and one braid was sticking out on one side, another braid on the other. I asked why didn't she connect all the braids as we agreed - that's how you protect the hair. She said "I tried but.." at that point I'm like you never tell a client you "tried but" there's no way she's licensed and should be doing hair. The braiding she did was loose also fuzzy & not clean. She gets flustered and turns me to tell the owner. The moment I ask the owners name (Mahogany btw) the owner became defensive even though I smiled relaxed just hoping for understanding & a solution. The "expert braider" is sent over to help. She says she can sew or crochet my loose natural braids into the other natural braids. I was confused as I'd NEVER heard that so asked clarifying questions which seemed to frustrate them. Totally over complicating a simple braid down lol. LSS she undos my entire braid down I noticed...mind you I had somewhere to be so without asking we reached hour 3 of a simple wash/natural braid on jaw length hair!!! Tired of the back n forth, misunderstanding, & pride/embarrassment they were all unnecessarily conveying I let her continue with the odd silence filling the air. She crochets my own hair and end pieces are sticking out its fuzzy I said I wasn't happy. 3. I got a trim. The blowout for the trim was not stretched straight and the owner proceeded to clip ends in that puffy state. The brushing of my hair felt rough throughout the trimming process. I've never had someone trim hair in that state. 4. The defensiveness, lack of listening to care therefore lack of comprehension, and pride was so not what I hoped when this is the exact persona ppl place on all black women/bwob that gives us a bad rep. I felt uncomfortable by the back n forth explaining and answering then the wild questions after "Do you want oil? Do you want oil sheen?" Would you seriously not oil a clients scalp as part of service how is that not standard? I had already noted my hair feeling dry. then before I even got out the chair the first girl had my payment on screen $58 asking how I'm paying when the expert braider turns my chair around. Terrible service handling. They can't handle constructive experiences which means they're no good for business. I cannot recommend.

In her own words she loves doing foil. I get 1 low light and 2 highlights and come away looking well...ooh la la fabulous. Laila is also a very warm funny lady and a joy to spend time in the chair with. I appreciate her skill and years of experience and will continue to patronize her until she leaves the area - don't leave though ok? I know my hair fine dark blond straight hair is not what she usually works with, but there is no doubt at all that she knows what she is doing. I highly recommend her and from my place in Alexandria, VA, it's just a little more than a 20 minute ride.

Needless to say my hair became damage from the weekly excessive heat. Years pass without going to Layla or any other salon. No heat or chemicals. I now have curly hair past my shoulders. When straightened,  down to my back. (Shrinkage is real)  I also now have gray hair. I called Laila to get my hair dyed black. Black is my natural color. She told me she will dye my hair brown not black. She then told me how she is a doctor for hair and knows about beauty . Oh and how looking like a grandma is not beautiful. That's Cookoo. Laila Cook can be the worst when it comes to customer service because she can be very delusional ,rude and close minded. Besides thinking she is the only one in the world that can do hair she doesn't listen to the customer. Laila dyes her own hair black for the same reason I wanted my hair dyed black, to cover up the grays. I do not want bleach in my hair. I love my curls. Why is that wrong? Btw. Grandmas are beautiful too. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

She's conveniently located on Branch Avenue less than 10 minutes from the metro where I park to go into DC everyday. I made the appointment and confirmed online. I arrived on time and she offered to let me sit in the kitchen to finish the food I'd brought. She did have a head in her chair at the time, but I wasn't over surprised. It was a cold, rainy Thursday evening. She got me in quickly and shampooed and conditioned me herself to sit under the dryer (of course) and then she quickly wrapped one client before me and got me in the chair. All-in-all I was out in under 2-1/2 hours and I consider that a complete win. My hair was LAID and I absolutely loved my curls. Whitney does an excellent job with natural hair. I don't need a whole silk press because my hair, while curly, is fine (3c/4a) but she still did a good job of determining the heat setting from my iron (I always bring my own now) and was willing to use my heat protectant, which I appreciated. 10/10

Second time here…read more It's very clean, like the first time, but the service was better the first time. No one greeted me upon walking in or asked what kind of service I wanted. Last time I visited, I was told that the braider typically works on Tuesdays or by appointment only and the braider was not present. The woman that I liked styling my hair, Maria, was also not present. The woman I did get was a little rude in assuming that I was fluent in Spanish, being aggressive as she washed my hair and not putting rollers on my hair or covering my ears before drying. Both employees working spoke in a very low tone, so low that I didn't even understand what was occurring until my hair was getting a blow out when I wanted curls :/ Nonetheless, there's a special on Tuesdays for wash and sets. I'll probably continue visiting this salon when there's a special or when I'm in the area. Other times, I think I'll stick to my usual salon because this one is too far from my home for hit or miss service.

I took my soft locs out and then searched Yelp for something with good reviews that was close to me and open and came across this salon. The salon is cute, spacious and clean. Maria was working by herself today but God knew I needed my hair done so she was finishing up someone as I walked in and had me at the shampoo bowl within 10 minutes. She scratched my scalp good with the shampoo and massaged my scalp with the conditioner. Then off to her chair. This was the first time I have ever had a blow out at a Dominican salon with no pain! The pain and feeling like my hair was being burned was why I stopped getting my hair straightened. She blew me out then flat ironed it before giving me a trim and sent me on my merry way in just over an hour. To note, 3 people walked in at different points of me getting my hair done. She greeted them and let them know that there would be a wait because she was alone. They all agreed to wait and she did not rush through my hair to get to the next client. She said it was just her because no one wanted to work after the holiday so I'm hoping it's better staffed on a normal day when it will be inevitably more busy because I definitely plan on returning.
