This review is for Sera…read more I completely understand that a stylist's time is valuable, and I know it's frustrating when clients are late. I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I deserved that same courtesy and respect in return.

Listen here or shall I say read here. Whatever. Seriously, this man is amazing with this thing…read morecalled hair! So I have a wild mane that I've done just about everything to. But with that comes some issues right? So yea, my hair has issues. I did a thorough search online seeking someone (preferably male because in my experience they do a better job) to actual CARE for my hair vs just doing it and sending me on my way. So I reached out to Derek via yelp messages. His responses were timely & he was easy to deal with so I made an appointment. I arrived Saturday morning and was greeted with smiling faces & a warm welcome (hard to come by at 8:30am right?) ok so everyone loves a good shampoo right? I'm talking massaging scalp with just enough pressure to relax even the most high strung person (yes that's me ‍) His assistant washed the hell out of my hair in the most relaxing, thank you for my piece of zen way!!! After his assistant was done, the wait time to Derek's chair wasn't bad. Good music playing, great convo made it a breeze. Upon getting in the chair looking like a lion from getting my hair blown out, Derek transformed my animalistic mane back to something beyond human. My hair was simply amazing! Light, soft, fabulous and FLY! Ok!!! Sooooo basically I found a new hair guy who's sent from heaven and will be seeing him every other week!

Much like you may be doing right now, I, too, was deep in review sites trying to find a well rated…read morebarber/stylist this time last week. Spending longer then I care to mention (research, yo!), I came across Universal Hair Salon. Close proximity to grocery stores/bars/restaurant I frequent, I questioned why I hadn't considered this place before. I dove into the reviews finding 4/5 star one after another and found Melvis in the process. I can confidently say the reviews were universally right... Prepared with what I had in mind, I showed Melvis cell pics while discussing my current hair situation and requesting consultative feedback. He provided suggestions and constructive feedback. Great start so we got started. Melvis is attentive, takes his time and is very detailed with his haircuts. This is the most I've been engaged in a haircut for some time and could not be more pleased with the experience let alone haircut. He even requested to blend my beard in with the cut so I'd look good before I shaved it off. Context: we'd talked about my quarantine hair, ensuing beard and how I felt a haircut and beard trim were long overdue. I was going to shave off my beard at home AFTER the cut but Melvis wanted me to look as best I could before doing so. Talk about being considerate and detail oriented. Rare, IMO, for DC and from what I've personally experienced. As for the salon, it has been renovated and is quite nice. Universal Hair Salon has hand sanitizer everywhere and took customer (and staff) safety seriously. Think signs for mask coverings, staff in masks, plexishields abound, etc.. Prices on the site are beyond reasonable and currently accurate. They've been open since their official reopening last Tuesday and really gave me a very professional, organized and safe lasting impression. I'll be going back to Melvis in about 6 weeks and encourage you to get on his list much sooner than later.

Although I experienced a very slightly language barrier, I could tell that the staff were very knowledgable about hair. There was only one other patron when I arrived, making the space quiet.
