My hair (Right) 1 month after a big trim. Hair was slightly past my shoulders and is growing back quickly! #MarissaIsAnArtist
Malaika S.

So, Marissa is THE stylist to see if you are looking for someone who actually takes proper care of your hair before/after styling it. I had a hairstylist for 5 years who was great at straightening hair, but I couldn't help but notice that my scalp was often dry and that my hair often felt brittle. Not only did I need for my hair to feel healthier, but I decided to go natural as well. I had a consultation with Marissa and explained how frustrating my previous experience was, and she proved that she could immediately figure out what my unique hair type needed. She also showed me how much of a perfectionist she is while straightening my hair. I forgot I no longer had a relaxer because my hair was still laid! After my first visit, I kid you not, I noticed stark differences in 1) The way my hair was trimmed, 2) How my hair stands felt from root to end, and 3) My biggest concern, my SCALP! I never knew what a trim was really supposed to look like, so I never complained when I wasn't "feeling it". But when Marissa trimmed my hair, somehow I knew it was a perfect trim. And I joked with her about how good it was, even though I couldn't specifically tell you what she did differently. Also, in the two weeks between getting my hair done and going back for my second visit, my hair didn't feel brittle at all, and I had no flakes in my scalp. At this point, I was so annoyed that I hadn't found Marissa earlier because my previous stylist made me feel that the issue with my scalp was an actual "scalp issue" and that there was nothing she could do about it. Enough said. Last point: It wouldn't be fair to describe Marissa as just a stylist. She is simply an artist, which is what you get when you have someone who is highly intelligent, a perfectionist, and serious about their craft. Now, I have one suggestion for anyone who feels nervous about paying an "above average" price to get their hair done at Bill Lawrence Salon. You WILL receive "above average" care, advice, and styling. The price we pay allows for our stylists to use the best hair products, research the best techniques, and style using the best technology. I decided, like many other fabulous women, that investing in the health of my hair was as much a priority as making sure it "slays". Long term, you will notice that your relationship with Marissa will mirror the relationship her hands have with your hair! P.S. Whenever I have a hair product in my hand, my boyfriend asks me, is this Marissa prescribed? Lol!

Bonita works wonders.

I have been a customer of Bill Lawrence Salon for over 15 years and I have always received excellent service from each and every staff member. For the last 6 years I've been going to Bonita for my hair styling service and she is nothing short of a miracle worker. Along with the fat that she has in depth knowledge of hair care - her styling capabilities are second to none. She's a hair care professional who can diagnose the problem and find the cure. She has vastly improved the health and length of my hair and I would recommend her services to anyone that is seeking a true hair care professional. My mother claims Bonita has "growing fingers" - and now that I see the length of my hair - I believe it.

Marissa is the TRUTH!!!

Marissa Marissa Marissa!!!! She is THEE best there! She is so talented and really knows about ALL hair types! She's totally a healthy hair advocate! I got a steam treatment, blow-out, flat iron and trim and my hair has NEVER looked as good! It has life! It's soft, bouncy and moisturized without being oily or greasy! She also gave me tips on how to keep the look up and other pointers! She made me feel so at home and I just trusted her with my hair! She can answer any and all of your hair questions because she is knowledgable about the SCIENCE behind healthy hair! Marissa is AMAZING!!! She's got the magic touch!!!

This review is for Sera…read more I completely understand that a stylist's time is valuable, and I know it's frustrating when clients are late. I also understand why my appointment needed to be rescheduled. My issue is not with the policy, it's with how I was treated. I was made to feel like an inconvenience from the moment I walked into the salon. I had a 12:45 p.m. appointment and called before leaving home to let the salon know I was running about 10 minutes late, which is their stated grace period. The receptionist told me she would let Sera know. At 12:56 p.m., when I was literally one minute away from the salon, I received a call saying Sera could no longer see me because I was late, and she had back-to-back clients. While I was disappointed, I understood. I asked if I could still come in briefly to speak with Sera because I wasn't even sure I needed a full highlight service, and the receptionist agreed. When I arrived, Sera immediately told me I needed to reschedule and seemed unwilling to discuss my hair beyond commenting that the back was "really dark" and explaining that she had returning clients scheduled after me. She didn't seem to know or care that I was a returning client. Sera had done my hair in February, and I came back because I had really liked her work. Not recognizing me in and of itself is not a big problem--I know a lot of people sit in her chair--but it made the interaction feel impersonal and left me wondering if she'd even prepared for my appointment. I was fully prepared to work with Sera and the receptionist to find another date and time that fit both of our schedules. Instead, both were unhelpful, dismissive, and rude. This experience was especially difficult because I have pretty severe alopecia areata that, thankfully, is now well controlled with medication, allowing me to grow most of my hair back. That said, I wore a wig for five years after losing most of my hair, so finding a stylist I trust is still an incredibly vulnerable and anxiety-producing experience. Every time I see someone new, I have to explain my hair loss and why I prefer a lived-in color that doesn't require overly frequent trips to the salon. I chose to return to Sera because I thought I had found someone I could continue seeing. Instead, I left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and genuinely upset. I walked out of the salon, called my husband, and cried like a reprimanded little girl. I am a 35-year-old grown-ass woman. Policies are important, and I respect them. Kindness and professionalism are just as important. Had the situation been handled with empathy and respect, I would have happily rescheduled. Instead, I left feeling less like a person and more like a time slot or a dollar sign. It seems like Sera may have enough clients that turning one away isn't a big deal, but I was respectful, cooperative, and ready to work with her to find another appointment. I deserved that same courtesy and respect in return.

Short review: Shigumi cut my hair. It looks awesome. I'm going back when I need my hair cut again…read more Long review: So hard to find a salon in DC. There are a lot of salons but if you look at the hair photos everything just seems weird and has an early 2000s vibe. Idk why. I chose this place because the reviews were decent and it's close to my apartment. I submitted the appointment request and got matched with Shigumi. Then I looked at her reviews in yelp and it was mixed. I kept the appt because I really needed a haircut and wanted to see what the Japanese salon thing was about. Unlike other reviews I was not given tea and didn't feel the overall Japanese vibe. There are cherry blossom colored lanterns hanging from the ceiling. Was anything else Japanese? Honestly I couldn't tell. It just seemed like a salon. Everything was very organized. I saw one person get turned away because they were late for there appt. Don't be late! For reference, I once had my hair cut at the now closed immortal beloved. I did a ton of research before going for my haircut. The place looked and smelled amazing but I got the worst haircut ever. Thanks again Shigumi!

Over the past five years, I have regularly visited Japanese hair salons in Los Angeles, New York City, and Boston while traveling frequently. In those experiences, even when a haircut did not fully match my preferred style or length, the technical quality was consistently strong, and any adjustments were handled professionally. Unfortunately, this experience was very different. One of the defining characteristics of a Japanese haircut is the smoothness, softness, precision, and careful organization of the layers. In my case, the cut lacked those qualities and appeared uneven and poorly structured (the photo from the back). I was also disappointed by the salon's management. Based on my experience, the overall operation and quality control did not reflect the standards typically associated with Japanese salons. Update (May 2026): Over the past 4 years, I have been with my Japanese hair stylist in New York. I returned to the salon to see Keiko because I was hoping to find a long-term stylist in Washington, DC. I had not had my haircut for 7 months prior to that because I delivered a baby in December 2025. Ozuki appeared to be one of the few salons in the area offering Japanese hairstylists. Immediately after the appointment, the haircut looked good due to the styling and blow-dry. However, within a few days, the shape became difficult to manage and appeared increasingly unstructured. The photo on my ID, taken approximately three weeks after the haircut, reflects how the cut settled over time. In contrast, the Japanese haircuts I have received elsewhere typically maintain their shape and balance for several months. Despite my concerns, I scheduled another appointment six weeks after the first haircut with Keiko because I genuinely hoped the issues could be corrected and that I could establish a relationship with a local stylist. At the same time, I let the management know that my haircut had bad form and hope that it can be resolved at the second appointment. Unfortunately, my interactions with management, Liz, were once again disappointing. Rather than addressing the concerns constructively, the response left me with little confidence that the salon could deliver the level of quality I was seeking. This is the first Japanese salon where I have repeatedly had unsatisfactory experiences. Based on the consistency of those experiences, I am not convinced that the salon operates at the standard typically associated with Japanese hairstyling.
