I visited this station for it's historical significance. Although not the original station (built in 1875 ) in town, this building was completed in 1911 for the Boston & Albany Railroad. At it's peak, 140 trains were making there way through this station, daily. Over the years it has served a variety of railroads and switched hands multiple times. As routes were moved away from Worcester, ridership decreased and in 1972 Amtrak boarded up the building and began to use a much smaller brick building nearby as it's station. By 1992 a group of locals began efforts to rehab the old station to it's original beauty. After several years of effort and planning, during which the building was purchased by the Commonwealth of MA, the building finally began restoration and in 2000 the building reopened to railway passengers. A small part of the station is set aside for rail passengers. Here you'll find a map of commuter rails and a MBTA ticket kiosk. There is no Amtrak customer service available here. You can purchase Amtrak tickets originating at this station through their web site. There is a small waiting area, a Worcester public library book vending machine, a police substation and a QR code that will link you to a walking tour of the Blackstone canal area. There is an elevator up to the platform level and ramps down to the bus level. Three vending machines are available for snacks and beverages. Public restrooms are older but clean enough as public restrooms go. The main part of the building is a beautiful vaulted hall that can be rented out for private events. This area is closed off during event and open to the public when not in use. There are also two dining areas off this main hall and a parking garage next door. I have been going by this train depot my entire life ...like 100's of thousands of times. I lived right up the street for a few years in my childhood and most of my life it was boarded up and in disrepair. About 20 years ago they decided to remodel it and spent millions of dollars to renovate it and bring it back to its glory. Every time we would drive by I wondered what it looked like inside and think that I needed to check it out someday. So a few days ago as we drove by my husband said "do you want to stop and check out Union Station?" YES!!!! There is a parking garage directly behind it with easy access into the station. The station is HUGE (well, not as big as the NYC!) and we walked throughout checking everything out. The station was pretty quiet on a Saturday afternoon and everything was closed (restaurants, coffee shop, police station etc), there was just a handful of people either waiting on a train or bus. The architecture was absolutely beautiful as most buildings built in this era were. I have no idea how well the ticketing and schedules work, but it is definitely a beautiful building worth checking out. read more

Went for the Start December Artisan fair. Great place for an event like this. We found street parking close by. A short walk. Grand front entrance. Vendors appropriate lined up in the great hall. Fit a lot of vendors. Beautiful high ceilings, beautiful glasswork. Overall impressed with this old building that has been taken care of. read more

Born in Worcester. Long gone, but I took a train here for a funeral and was shuttled off a still moving train into a maze of construction sluse and figured it out. Coming back was altogether different, coming through Union Station with no idea what I'm supposed to do. It's a ghost town here on a Saturday, the men's bathrooms are down and out with no clear indication as to where one might take a piss. The only representation is a janitor and a "police station." What the fuck would it cost to have a designated person here to help folx out? Give a shit. Will ya. I'm gonna play my guitar now. read more

I wish I had a time machine. I know they a very big renovation to this station, but I would still have liked to see all the grandeur when railroads were a much bigger thing. I would have traveled to it's opening in 1911 (Thanks Amanda L.). Though other than for functions (and having a formal dance or wedding here would be amazing) the hall is a magnificent, open, indoor space. Goes to say that when renovating they didn't mind spending extra for show, if nothing else. This space was, I think, once where people would once wait for their trains. Now you have to catch trains on the upper level. There was signage in the station, but even though this station isn't as busy as South Station, having it more conspicuously places would be nice. I don't know how to make it fit into the aesthetic, but I can only imagine someone with very poor navigation skills who's not been here before trying to figure out where to catch a train. The station is clean, and the restroom are extremely presentable (especially for a train station). Two dining option I was able to find, a newsstand like place, and a restaurant upscale enough that they have a rather "dressy" dress code. read more

Great for catching a train, and being dropped off. The traffic patterns around here are weird though. There are a couple places where you can't turn, and it makes it hard to access the pickup area for passengers. There could be more food options in the waiting area, otherwise there's nothing to fancy about the place...its a train station. Have been to union station many times and always had a good experience. Well that didn't happen yesterday . Their service from the waitress and what seemed to be the manger was very rude. We waited well over an hour for our dinner . Chicken tenders and a burger . When we got there it was busy I will give them that but by the time we got our food it was empty and people who came in after us had already ate their food . The manager even argued with us tell us that we only waited 40 mins and not a full hour.I do understand restaurants are short staffed but if you keep people waiting don't ignore them let them know what's going on read more

Went to my sister in laws wedding and the staff at union station restaurant/venue were amazing. They helped to make the day run smoothly and were very accommodating when we asked for things. The food was delicious and the added details they put into making the hall look its best was great. Dave that was running the show was the best I have seen around. He truly made this day. Every train station should have a bar and a night club in it! I've never taken the commuter rail from this beautiful building, I just come out here to go to Byblos lounge. They even set up the huge room between the two night clubs for big weddings and functions. I was here on New Years Eve and the whole station was set for this big wedding, it was really impressive. The places in side are really nice and worth coming out to. You can park in the garage and not have to even go outside. After 9 there isn't any one here except the bar and lounge patrons. read more

Worcester Union Station is always a work in progress. Bring a drink and a snack. There's a restaurant and a coffee shop that open at irregular times to small crowds. There's one MBTA train to Boston that's fairly reliable, with an express run at 8 am. The state cannabis commission is moving in, which brings additional foot traffic. Parking is a bit expensive but the garage is ok. read more

So I had come here for a celebration of life event after a funeral late February. Already dealing with an incredibly tragic event our emotional experience was then compounded by having to deal with such an unprofessional and disdainful individual, Gus. He made our experience very unpleasant almost immediately. He was completely rude and angry. While reviewing our food order with him he proceeded to scream at us about the disposal of the copious amounts chicken bones. I mean seriously? He also refused the widows requests of simply serving drinks in glass Instead insisting on guests using plastic cups at this formal event. Also on several occasions while planning this event he actually SCREAMED at us regarding our menu and time slots. Our experience with Gus was absolutely dreadful. We will never do business here again. read more

I have been taking the Commuter rail since June. Over the last few months the homeless population in Union Station is increasing and I only assume with the cold weather it will be worse. I usually get in at around 6:30pm from Back Bay Station in Boston and it is dark as you can imagine. Last night there was not one security guard on the platform, or down in the lobby, nor in the parking garage. This is a liability, and honestly a huge concern for many of the folks that take the commuter rail. There needs to be security there at all times, and/or a police officer. I walk from Union Station to St. John's on Temple street where I park and it is unsafe. I got off the train last night and and there were 5-6 homeless people on benches in the station, and one man on the platform demanding money. Fix This! read more

It's a train station, that's for sure! I ride the train into Boston daily and the lots off of Shrewsbury Street fill up fast if you're not on one of the trains that gets to Boston before 9am. Those lots are also terrifyingly poorly lit in the evening and since the lots are maintained by the City of Worcester they're also inadequacy cleared of snow and ice for most of the winter, but for $3/day parking I'd still rather use the surface lots that Union Stations $10/day parking garage. ** PARKING PRICES (current to review date) Surface Lot (Shrewsbury St) - $3/day exact cash only in honor box ($25-20 parking ticket for non payment) Parking Garage (Franklin St) - hourly rates to $10/day cash/credit or $63/month ($10 card fee first month) The inside of the station is nice, perfect for a grand soiree I suppose since I've come home and seen events from fashion shows to weddings being held here on weekends and Friday evenings. You can buy your tickets in to Boston using an automated machine (that rarely accepts credit cards) that is incredibly confusing for newbies but important since you can only buy tickets on board the trains with cash (if you can't figure it out ask someone who looks like they ride the train a lot, the security staff has no idea how to use them!) There's an ATM inside but it's a local bank so expect a surcharge. The little cafe that's open in the morning is small but nice, they also only accept cash. The food and coffee isn't great but honestly, neither are any of the nearby Dunkin Donuts most days. There's a connection from the main Union Station building to the bus depot but I've never ventured down that way. read more

Back in the '70's when this station was making the transition from being a Penn Central property to a Conrail property, it was not in good shape. In fact rumour has it that a local psycho kidnapped a girl, killed her, raped her, pissed on her body, dumped her thru the roof of the place and then set fire to her. And that was not on Hallowe'en, just another Tuesday in Worcester back then. As Count Floyd from SCTV would have said, "Oooh, Scary." Well this place has got a makeover since then. It is really spiffy. I first saw it in 2002 or so, but recently got to use the excellent MBTA service to Worcester from South Station. Even with some track maintenance issues, the goddam train was right on time. I had some time to check out the beautifully remodelled station, since my ride was backed up on I-84 due to a spillage of olive oil. That was weird. In any case, there is a snazzy bar, a swanky restaurant, the intercity bus service outta Worcester is now on the lower level. It seems that railroad stations in the US (and Canada, for that matter) are either complete dumps or gorgeous makeover successes. Worcester Union Station is one hot makeover. read more

Never park here. The automatic machines will not take credit cards and there are no humans to help you. They over charged for parking, website said $8.50 for all day, we parked at 3:30 and were out by 11 and we aid $10. There are plenty of the local homeless who are looking for a bench to keep you company while the pay machines won't take your money. Riverside is much better and cheaper. I will drive to Boston before I take the train from Worcester again. read more
