Very beautiful historical train station in Washington DC. Not busy at all and very clean. Came here to check out this old train station on our recent tour of Washington DC. It's not as big as Grand Central in New York, but it's a lot cleaner and a lot prettier. The half dome ceiling is ornate and has a lot of beautiful little features. This place has become a destination! I can remember when they were performing renovations to the building, some 10 years ago, and since that time, the station has only gotten better! The architecture of the interior of the building is so amazing.. They have some wonderful high end clothing stores on the top level, but I noticed that most of them were closed when I was here in the late afternoon. I used to travel from here several times a week, not that long ago, and McDonalds and Sbarros Pizza were always my go to restaurants. There were some security issues a few years ago, but I believe that Amtrack Police have done a lot to improve things. I know that I never had an issue not once. It was nice to re-visit my old stomping grounds. read more

I was excited to come through Union Station again, as the first time I came to DC, I came through it from BWI. I wanted to show my bf how gorgeous and spacious this station was and how easy it was to take the Metro or a Lyft to anywhere in DC. The only thing he remembers about this station is the homeless encampment in front with an older woman screaming obscenities at all the people loading into cars and buses out front. I'm not sure why there are no security guards inside and no one to break up the encampment outside, but there are people who will give your Lyft driver a ticket for sitting there while you run to her car and she ends up cancelling on you even though she sees you because the person is threatening to give her a ticket. She screams, "sorry!" at you as she drives away and the person moves on to the next car that actually physically has someone entering it. Odd. Hopefully, this place will come back to it's beautiful self. For now, keep your guard up. read more

This is a BEAUTIFUL station inside and out, there are a good amount of spots inside to eat, have a drink and plenty of shopping. I haven't taken the train here but I noticed it seems very easy to get in and out of and if you're picking up someone the flow of traffic looked very easy. read more

Union Station is like a travel hub of DC minus airplanes. However, if you need to catch a bus or train to or from DC, this is the place to go. Another cool thing about this station is that it's like a mini mall as well. There's stores where you can do a little shopping and several dining options. Unfortunately, due to covid, some of the stores and restaurants are currently closed, including Magnolia Bakery. *insert cry of despair* The station has some old-school historical charm but I do think some areas of the station could use some updates and renovations, especially the waiting areas. I'm not sure how they get in or even why but don't be surprised if you see some pigeons walking past you or flying around inside of the station. I recently started working in DC so I will be frequenting this station to catch the Marc train. read more

I have taken several trips out of Union Station and my train has never been delayed for a significant amount of time. The check in process has always been smooth and it is a big hub for many other destinations. The place is huge! The architecture of the building is marvelous and beautiful! There are plenty of food options for you to either get a drink, snack, or a meal. They even have an Amtrak lounge if you do qualify. They also have clothing stores like Uniqlo and Walgreens to get toiletries. If Washington is your destination there is just about every mode of transportation you can take once you do get off the train. read more

One of the most stunning train stations that I have ever been to! It's like a mini Grand Central Station but between me and you, I kind of like this train station a lot more. You cannot help but to gawk at the architecture. It's truly one of a kind and they've reserved it so well. It has a classic Beaux-Arts structure that's striking from both inside and out. The ceiling work is so elegant and intricate. Each room has its' own elaborate design and it's just something that you must witness while you're here. Union Station is the hub for all things transportation in DC, and it's one of the first railroad terminals to be built in the US. It connects to Amtrak, Metro, Marc,VRE, buses, taxis, and car rental station. Even if you're not planning on coming here to travel on public transportation, a visit to this station is an absolute MUST. First of all, the dining options are aplenty. So many good places to eat and a great option if you're coming with a group pf people because they have a huge cafeteria style food court on the lower level with tons of food options. The SHOPPING! Yaaasss!!! There are so many stores and kiosks in the station. From popular clothing stores to kiosks selling handmade goods; if you're a shopper, you'll be sure to find something that will appease your interests. Union Station is also walking distance from several different landmarks within the National Mall. You can stop here while along the way while you're already sightseeing through the city. The only troubling thing to be aware of when coming here is the vast amount of homelessness. Like many large train stations, you'll experience this. But, the homeless people here are very bold. Just be aware of your surroundings and you should be fine. read more

I have started traveling to work in DC three-four days a week and then make the trek back to NYC for the weekends. The station is in need to renovations and there seems to be a fight about it between a property management company and the transportation authority themselves. There's a food court in the lower level, but half of the space is vacant or deserted as COVID killed them. There seems to be an issue with the homeless roaming within the vicinity, but it definitely does not compare to NYC homeless population at Penn Station. read more

Train stations are kind of a special thing for me because I'm from a city that doesn't have any trains. We have a bus depot lol but that's not nearly as cool. I happened to be near union station (it's just a few blocks from the capitol building) and needed to take a metro. The walk from the capitol building was scenic and downhill. Then I got to the park in front of union station and was sang to by some homeless people. Once inside it was surprisingly beautiful and clean. I realized the metro entrance was all the way on the other side of the building, but I got to see all the shops and food options inside the station where like the Amtrak trains come in. There is quite a variety! It was a fairly bustling place of people and their luggage. Once I got to the far side, I went down the escalator to where the metro is. Signs were plentiful and easy to follow. read more

I only look for a few things for a transportation station: clarity in messaging, safety, and good options for food and snacks. I do not feel that Union Station lacks in these. Routing through for Amtrak is a breeze, they have many signs around the stations, the Wifi works well -- and it is TOUGH in a transpo station when it does not -- and the announcements are loud and straightforward. I had no problem getting to and from gates myself, even with far too many bags for a short trip and not being local to D.C. I felt that the staff did a good job in making the area feel safe. There were security staff at entrances and exits and throughout the station. The staff were friendly and helpful in directing all of us throughout the area, and I felt welcomed and did not feel in danger. And finally, the food and coffee options were plentiful. I went through Union Station twice on my trip and stopped at Jamba Juice, Pret-a-Manger, and Au Bon Pain. Each were clean, had friendly service, and did not have crazy levels of tranportation/price rise shenanigans. I actually paid the least at Pret-a-Manger, which I thought would dig into my pockets! Overall I'd travel through Union again, and I recommend it to travelers coming through. read more

Beware! Homeless people galore and lack of security! My daughter and I got bombarded in the restroom by two homeless women looking at our stuff and asking for money. I for sure did not feel safe. We also saw a homeless man rummaging through clothes in a shop and he wreaked of booze. This place has gone downhill dramatically. Getting our train was easy. We just lined up once we had our track and went on with no problems. It can get very busy and crowded inside. One thing I do like about union station is the shops and food options. They have a Neuhaus which is my all time favorite chocolate, always have to stop in. There's so many dining options from fast food, to bakeries, sandwiches, ice cream, crepes, pizza and so much more. There are a few clothing stores and pretty much anything you could need. read more

Union station is my favorite train station. The architecture is amazing, both on the inside and outside. It's gorgeous! The architecture aside, this station is a functioning train station and bus terminal. It's easy to find your bus or train and I haven't had any big lateness issues. There are also has plenty of good food options while you are waiting for your train. There is a nice variety of options, like Chick-fll-A, Bojangles' Chicken and Biscuits, Shake Shack, Magnolia Bakery, and a full service Uno's restaurant. This is not the kind of train station to rush through. Take the time to admire the architecture or grab some food. read more

This is a beautiful station and my routine, over a period of days, was to arrive as daylight approached. Sitting at Blue Bottle Coffee off the main lobby, while watching the mammoth room fill with life, was one of the great little pleasures each day. I'm hard on Metro, but I like Union Station. The WMATA Metro part of it still sucks, but Amtrak, MARC, and VRE are pretty solid. Great location. Near the NoMa area of DC and the Senate side of the Hill. The building itself is beautiful and there are lots of shopping and eating options. For the latter options include Pret a Manger, Shake Shack, Legal Seafood, Cava, Chopt, and Le Pain Quotidien. And there's both a Starbucks and a Dunkin Donuts. That's covering a lot of bases. I already reviewed Union Station. I am adding a few new thoughts. I use the facility slightly less than the most frequent riders. In 2024, for example, I will have approximately three dozen trips either starting or finishing here. (I also fly quite a bit. It should be just shy of one hundred trips in the air in the same time period.) I want to mention three additional aspects. The first is that the food offerings are lacking. Before the pandemic, they had a Legal Seafoods. They had fine dining. The place was bustling. Now, it is sad. You wouldn't think this was a national capitol. It barely seems like a major city. They supposedly have big plans. I hope those are realized. The second is that the elevators from parking are creepy. I routinely run in major metropolitan areas, through neighborhoods people warn about. I mention that in terms of calibration: I am not afraid, and I am wary not of people but about prejudice. Thus, if I am anxious, a fortiori others will be alarmed. The problem, even with the mirror they have mounted, is there are blind corners, long corridors, and no people around. I would be shocked if assaults did not occur. My note on Yelp is the least that can be done. This establishes, or it ought to, notice for litigation purposes. So whoever is injured, the operators of the facility have been directed explicitly to the risk. The third is a positive. The new restrooms, either a shipping container or a structure in that style, are welcome. The renovations of the restrooms as well. They have demonstrated the ability to improve. May that continue. read more

Now that I live in Baltimore, I'm excited to take the train in to visit to DC often. It's pretty easy to grab the MARC or an Amtrak from Baltimore and arrive at Union in 40 minutes to an hour (depending on the type of train). Union Station is very convenient, since it is a train station, bus station, and metro station (Red Line). However convenient it is, Union Station is just fine. It's a bit of a confusing layout and many shops and restaurants weren't open at times when I would have expected them to be. However, it's convenient and necessary! And there is some beauty to the old place! Not a bad place to arrive in DC. read more

A good place for transportation fans. Union Station is the best way to come into DC, better than flying in. It gets most of its traffic from Amtrak. Metro also has a stop here. There's lots of places to eat and shop. Coming to DC this way is much better than the airports. If you're close enough I recommending taking a train in. This is the main transportation hub of Amtrak in this region. It also connects with buses. There's a Metro stop where you can transfer between systems. It also helps there's lots of places to eat. Many places are chains but some aren't as well known as others. It gets such high marks because it's so clean. Many people have already said it. I have been to stations at various cities, this one is my favorite. Very well maintained, clean and very easy to navigate. Directions are well presented on every wall. People working at the ticketing counter have been very nice. Resting area is pretty comfortable. If you're trying to find a charger for your phone then it would be pretty difficult to fine one. Otherwise, great place to rest if you arrive early for your train. They have some decent food options. I usually prefer the Cava there. Restrooms are pretty clean as well. read more

Conveniently located next to the METRO, free Wi-Fi, a limited number of food options and some stores. What I like about this station is all the tracks are in one area, close to many viewing status boards. One disadvantage of this, when it's busy, people are herded together like cattle. The building in itself is beautiful, but a little tired. It needs a little more love and care. All in all you don't have other options to take a train in and out of Washington. read more

It's sad to see the toll that COVID has taken on this beautiful building. It seems like half the storefronts are now empty and the food court doesn't have nearly as many options as it used to offer. Panhandlers roam the hallways and harass travelers. A homeless encampment now occupies the front lawns. Homeless people also occupy several of the nooks and crannies inside the building. read more

I booked an Acela, business class trip from Washington, DC to NYC, on a "quiet car" train. Though the car was supposed to be a quiet car the unstable woman in the attached photos (who was seated in front of me) stood up, confronted me over her seat and engaged me with a hostile disposition, demanding to know what I was doing on my laptop. She then hovered over her seat to look down at my computer screen for an extended amount of time while my laptop sat in front of me on my tray. There was not one peep of sound being broadcast from my computer and I was quietly playing a game of solitaire - alone. Quietly entertaining myself, bothering no one. Despite all of the peaceful, zen, and tranquil energy in my aisle, this crazy woman, visibly triggered, stood up and decided that it would be to her benefit to confront me about what it was I was doing, as she then confessed "I wanted to see!" I explained to her that her behavior was inappropriate, that we were in public, that we were on a quiet train, and that what I was doing in my own seat, that I paid for, was not her business. This apparently triggered her even more because she then began to get up from her assigned seat several times to walk up and down the aisle following her initial meltdown, seemingly to use the facilities or something or another. I'm not sure, but in the end I had to report her to Amtrak police, filed a report of harassment, sent Amtrak photos of this lady, and was assigned a case number. I am giving 4 stars to Amtrak for the the process that they have in place for documenting situations like this, and for caring about the experience of their customers. Kudos to Amtrak for their responsiveness on the situation! I would suggest that if you are a frequent Amtrak traveler, do program 27311 into your phone, as this will enable you to text Amtrak police right away! read more

One of the most beautiful train stations I've been to in the US. I love the old stone, the spacious, intricately designed interior, and the famous guardian statues. They've got plenty of restaurants and stores to grab a quick bite to eat while you wait for your train. Security is also on it in the rare occasion that a crazy person bugs people for money. Union Station serves as a major train station for Amtrak, VRE commuter rail, and the Metro subway system. There are plenty of stores for shopping and a wide variety of restaurants for food on the good and nice sit down dining as well. On the lower level, you will find a huge food court and a CVS as well. The structure is absolutely breathtaking because of the large, high ceilings with intricate decorations and beautiful marble flooring. Anytime I catch Amtrak from Union Station, I feel as though I am in a movie, about to embark upon an adventure of some sort. I guess its nostalgia. I remember taking Amtrak as a child to visit family on the East Coast during the holidays and it was the coolest thing for me!!! Still is!! I have also taken the VRE to the Baltimore Harbor and that was quite pleasant and surprisingly easy as well. read more

To commence, the Union Station in Washington DC has many pros, but one major negative. To elaborate, the Union Station has tons of restaurants, stores, and a great food court. Further to this, the food court has a McDonalds, Wendys, Taco Bell, Starbucks, and more. It's as loaded as it gets. With this in mind, Union Station has tons of great shops like Walgreens, Warby Parker, Laderach Chocolatier, Alamo Flags, etc. Also, they're many great restaurants like Shake Shack, Chick-fil-A, and Pizzeria Uno scattered across the Union Station. In addition, the architecture of Union Station is absolutely beautiful. With all this being said, there is one major problem that lowers this rating, the homeless people. There are homeless people everywhere and they non-stop ask you for money. I gave the first homeless person I saw $5 and then I was swarmed by at least five more. When I tried to get away from them, they continued to follow me. I was able to lose the group, but the worse was yet to come. As I was going up an escalator to leave, one homeless person followed me out of the building and into the streets. The person continued to follow me and I was getting scared so I ran back into the Station where I hid for the next few hours. All things considered, the Union Station has a lot of great shops and restaurants, but beware of the homeless people. read more

Strange state of Union Station. This place has a high end section with delicious Swiss Chocolatier and in other sections is overrun with homeless people trying to find shelter from the rain. It seems that much of the stores, both high end and convenience have become victims of the pandemic. 3 out of every 4 storefronts are vacant. Beautiful architecture and lots of promise. Glad we came, but I would not recommend coming alone. There were dozens of police officers and it still did not feel entirely safe. read more

Probably not fair to give it a 3. The building is fantastic but the staff, especially Amtrak, were pretty rude. We took the MARC from Union Station to Baltimore and that gets 5 Stars but they need to make things easier for the customer to find things like the MARC and guessing AMTRAK must see them as competition so they really did not want to help my wife but we got to where we were going and all is good with us. I think some people may have really gotten all turned around in the same situation. read more

Union Station never disappoints, from the pristine floors to the accessibility to the city. This is a local landmark that has a lot to offer and serves as a great meeting point. I really appreciate the validated parking, I wish they offered the first 30 minutes free as a courtesy. I cant believe that I did not write a review! What!! This place stays busy. I recommend taking metro when coming here. Coming here via carpool or UBER is frowned upon became people make their own traffic laws. People will board or unload in the traffic circle. Causing delays and back ups.. ... Okay despite that, it's lovely during the winter holidays. All the lovely decorations and lights will put you in the holiday spirit.. If im DC during the week I'll take the Marc train instead of metro. Much more better equipped and a smoother ride. There's plenty of nice shops and of course the food court down stairs. They even have a post office, where the employees are actually nice and efficient. When I use to work downtown, I would take either Metro or MARC Train, and take the DC CIRCULATOR to get me into the city. At night please use the buddy system and be very alert of your surroundings, and watch your belongings, there are a lot of panhandlers that can be aggressive when asking for $$. I can't wait for the pandemic to be over so I can, enjoy this place all over again. read more

Not to throw my city under the bus (or rather, the train), but NY Penn Station could learn a bit from Union Station. First, the station is relatively clean compared to most US train/bus stations that are in major transportation hubs. I love the overall style and layout of the station. Union Sq has a huge food court on the lowest level. In addition to the food court with your typical fast food restaurants that you would found in a mall, there are a few mid- to high-end restaurants. Likewise, they are similarly style clothing stores. Plus, there is an H&M in the station. For folks traveling via Amtrak, there is plenty of seating so one doesn't have to sit on the floor while waiting for your train. read more
