They are absolutely capitalizing on his upbringing here with a museum, statues, and all sorts of structures named after the man who some would call the greatest American writer. Tucked at the bottom of Cardiff Hill at the intersection of North and Main Street, this statue of two of Twain's most famous characters. Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn's adventures took place in the fictional town of Saint Petersburg but it was very definitely Hannibal. The statues are by artist Frederick C. Our tour guide was Avery and he was fantastic! From the middle that we stepped out to take a picture in front of the cave until we exited through the gift shop. It was a great experience. We walked through places in the cave that were noted in the adventures of Tom Sawyer, and through the cave history, including the thousands of signatures in the cave. We also participated in 15 through a pay dirt bag. This space is grade for all ages, and they have ample souvenirs. In the gift shop. We even visited the winery across the street. From the moment we stepped inside, our guide Ella was gneiss as can be, sharing tons of history without taking it for granite. The winding passages are truly stalagmite-ic (okay, maybe just stunning!), and exploring the very place that inspired Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn totally rocked our world. It's a cave-in-your-plans kind of attraction--don't skip the gift shop either, it's a gem. We had a sedimentary sort of day just soaking it all in, but honestly, it was ore-inspiring from start to finish. Five out of five stars, we will never chalk this up to a bad experience! I do recommend pants and closed toe shoes if you are on the colder side.

It was a beautiful day and incredibly quiet out here. We spent about 30 minutes walking around, reading the signs and looking at the old barn and surrounding property. At some point it really did feel like time had stopped. What I liked most was that the place hasn't been turned into some huge tourist attraction. It's simple and peaceful, and knowing that Walt Disney spent part of his childhood around these surroundings gives it a completely different meaning. Our visit was free, which was also a nice surprise. If you're expecting rides or a big museum, this isn't that. But if you're interested in Walt Disney's early life and want to spend a little time somewhere quiet while visiting Marceline, I think it's absolutely worth the stop.

A huge plus of this experience was that it was Free To The Public. There were signs throughout the land that were interesting and helped guide me during my visit. The Original Dreaming Tree was honored with a sign near where it once stood. Unfortunately, it was struck by lightning in 2008. Not too many feet away, The Son of Dreaming Tree was planted. When are you going to see a lighthouse in the middle of the country? This little lighthouse was…read morebuilt in 1934 to honor Mark Twain on the 100th anniversary of his birth. The picturesque lighthouse is non-functional and overlooks the Mississippi River. There is a plaque that describes the history of the lighthouse, which was dedicated in 1935 by Franklin Roosevelt. In 1960, the lighthouse was destroyed in a windstorm and rebuilt in 1963. The current building was dedicated by John Kennedy in 1963 and later renovated in 1994. You can see the lighthouse house from downtown Hannibal and climb the steep stairs to view up close. We drove up the windy road to the base where there is free parking for about a dozen cars. After ascending a short flight of steps, we were rewarded with views of the Mississippi River, downtown Hannibal and peeks of the Mark Twain Memorial Bridge. The lighthouse is not open for tours, it's just an outside visit. There is no charge to see the building. There are no amenities at the site except for a bench. The lighthouse is worth a short visit.

This a beautiful home with a fantastic courtyard and path next to a small stream with live fish…read more The home is the located directly across from the Chance Rose Garden. The Chance Gardens are located directly behind The historical society. This place is a must stop anytime you are in Centralia. It is located roughly 4 blocks from downtown Centralia. We were on our way to the local fair. This is a stop my wife and I always make so I can get some great pictures of the roses in bloom. Weddings and other parties can be scheduled at the Gardens upon request: the wall mount stated. It is a beautiful and lovely placed to spend an afternoon just relaxing and checking out the local town scenery. The only downfall that I have found is parking is very tough during certain times. But, it is a wonderful place to visit when you are in town.
