Well, when it came time that I needed to do some digging around for local Missouri lore related to square dancing, I did a little checking on their website and as Emeril says, BAM!, they cooked up exactly what I needed. The best part was, it was free. I mean, I guess my taxes are paying for it, but the folks who work there are really helpful, they actually seem like they want to assist me, and they had all this equipment for me to use when I needed to listen to some cassette tapes and even some reel-to-reel audio. Of course, there were some weird things I had to get used to. No pens. None. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Zed. But I could carry around electromagnets, no problem? Anyhow, that being said, I had to get used to other archivist rules (keep everything that was in a folder, actually keep it in the folder). But since they deal with one-of-a-kind stuff, and they don't want to lose anything, this makes sense. I wish I had a reason to delve into their archives earlier, now this place is on my list whenever I have any inkling to learn something about Missouri history.

Self guided tour takes you through Mark Twains life as a child, into adulthood and his life as Mark Twain. The primary characters, their reallife references The family home, the family run pharmacy, the judges office and court, Becky Thatchers house are all within a few feet of each other and in the same couple of blocks on the street. Make it an easy walking tour and worth your time. There are a few stairs to the upper floors but otherwise its a fairly easy walk at your own pace tour that takes an hour or so to go through. The museum staff are really nice! They were very welcoming and made sure to point out the small Anthropology museum that you can also visit. Pros: this is free! As I mentioned above the staff seem really nice. I also overheard a little bit of several docents giving tours to different groups while I was there, and they seemed really knowledgeable and had interesting stories and facts about the art. The only thing to keep in mind, is that it is pretty small. You probably wouldn't spend a whole day here. I spent about an hour.

The door is around the front and on the left side kind of under the building. The way is marked with signs. I'd call this about a good 1-2hour stop you can stay as short or as long as you like and good for pretty much all ages.

This would be the perfect place to show kids what a rotary phone looks like and that sort of thing. It is a little rough around the edges and takes up just one large "room" but it is very easy to find and access, free, and open March to December from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tip: directly behind the museum are nicer public restrooms than one might expect.
