We are not regulars here. We come once in a while if we are at a clinic at the university. The ice cream is very good although it takes a very long time to get your order. They have done away with straws which is fine although it is ridiculous when you order a milkshake. Truthfully, I am not sure what the business model is for this business. However, staying open after men's hockey games would be a huge boost to profits as long as they can keep the lines moving. The hours of operation are limited based on when I am on campus. read more

So, the UNH Dairy Bar is vastly different from the Dairy Bar of previous reviews. Pirated straight from their website: *The Dairy Bar restaurant offers made-to-order menu items with a focus on local, sustainable and fresh foods. Open daily until 6:30pm, the Dairy Bar features all of your favorites like Blake's local ice cream, wholesome breakfast items and upscale sandwiches and local greens, all served in compostable packaging to limit our environmental impact. It is a whole new experience at a whole new Dairy Bar.* So yeah, gone are the greasy spoon delights and massive kiddie cones of the previous incarnation. Now, the focus is on healthier food and local produce. However, that doesn't mean that the food has gone to pot, as I feel just as pleased eating there now as I did once upon a time. The menu is small, but most everything I've had there is quite good. Unfortunately, the online menu is not working, but I can attest to the deliciousness of their baked goods, breakfast sandwiches (loaded with bacon, of course), the roast beef & boursin, the greek isles chicken, the smoked turkey club (I think it's turkey, maybe something else), and the BLT. There are a few other items on the menu, but suffice to say, you should find something you like. Try not to go here at lunchtime during the week, as you will find the Dairy Bar to be exceedingly popular with the campus denizens (faculty and staff to students). The makeover this facility endured has left it stunning on the inside, with lots of exposed brick, large wooden beams, and wonderful recycled glass and stone countertops. If you've not been here since the renovation started, you really should check it out. The food is still great, albeit a little bit more expensive, and the environs are top notch. UNH Dairy Bar is a local tradition. Located at the Train stop, this student run ice cream shop offers some of the most generous portions I have ever seen. I could barely finish a small. And the prices are comparable to other ice cream places in the area. I'm told they serve things other than ice cream, but I can only vouch for the ice cream. My boyfriend's grandmother was telling me about how she used to bring her boys there when they were little. So it's been around for a long time. read more

Haven't been here in years, the remodel shows brick and wood. Parking problematic, and costs. Ordered at lunch a bit before noon, line not too long - a bowl of chicken tortilla soup, $4.99. Young, cheery, proficient cashier. She gave me a buzzer to let me know to come get my food. There is a sign denoting the pickup area, took about 8 minutes to get my food. Soup came with oyster crackers and 3 apple slices. Pick up area / utensil area was congested, in part due to a 70ish woman who favored blocking the singe ingress/egress area. Be prepared for a noisy and congested floor space when you sit down. Soup was a very modest portion, with a flavorful, pronounced tomato base - tons of veggies, much less chicken. They should have called it tomato vegetable chicken tortilla soup. By the time I was done, the lunch line was long, and it was even noisier. My verdict: tasty food but small portioned, noisy atmosphere, pay for parking, cramped. If that's your cup of tea, come on in. read more

Although the inside portion with the sandwiches and non-ice cream foods was closed, we went ahead and had some ice cream. It was great ice cream but the ice cream itself isn't exactly local. It was Gifford's ice cream which is based in Maine. At least it's not from across the country! With the message of the dairy bar being local and fresh, I was expecting the ice cream to have been from UNH or a nearby town. Being a chocolate lover, the Chocolate Lover's was exactly what I was looking for. It was definitely filling and delicious! Just keep an eye of your kids at the seating area as there is train station at the dairy bar. Although there are bushes separating you from most of the platform, it is a functioning train station. However, it doesn't seem to be a very busy one so you don't have to worry about trains whizzing by. read more

Love the dairy bar food and ice cream. Just wish they had hours that were more accommodating for local families who don't get out for ice cream until after dinner in the summertime. UNH Dairy Bar is the best food and best value in Durham. Focus on local, fresh ingredients - great sandwiches and soups. Turkey Boursin is my favorite and of course Ice Cream. (now Gifford's of Maine). Member of Green Alliance - compostable serving ware etc....they do the right thing. Hours vary by time of year...late nights in summer but early close in winter - also based on academic calendar. You won't be disappointed by this local landmark - even President Obama stopped by and liked it recently As an added bonus, it is a beautifully restored rail station served by the Amtrak Downeaster which runs five roundtrips daily between Boston and Portland (and soon Freeport) - and Pan Am freights - lots to see! read more

Hidden gem on the otherwise boring (at least, in summer, when I was there) UNH campus. Located in the old train station, this diner offers breakfast, lunch and ice cream. Someone brought us takeout from here so I think we can speak with authority about the food. We ordered three sandwiches - all good and fresh. I like the roast beef with Boursin with has a rare roast beef with Boursin melted over it on a ciabatta roll. My dining partners ordered the tuna and the grilled cheese - also good. The last time I took the kids here, there were so many yellow jackets buzzing around The tables outside of that we were completely unable to enjoy our treat. We kept moving tables and finally ran over to the stairs leading up to the street but they found us even there! It totally ruined the experience. Please invest in enclosed trash cans or get an exterminator to find the nests! The bugs were swarming around the completely open trash cans full of people's discarded ice cream cups. read more

The healthy food is excellent with a nice balance of delicious ice cream. The wraps are phenomenal and the service is great. I have been here twice and I really enjoyed my 2 sandwiches. First, I tried the Pesto Chicken (which had actual chicken breast and fresh mozzarella cheese.) Next, I tried the roast beef santa fe sandwich which had fresh pico and roast beef. Although it is a little pricier and the focus is on health.
