BrassMonkey falls somewhere in between, but definitely closer to an escape. Afterall, it's in Copenhagen which is decidedly non-tropical in most ways. In addition to checking out BrassMonkey for its inherent tiki-ness, my girlfriend and I went back a second night for a ska/reggae night being held. Some skinheads were djing on the second floor and it was a really good time. The drinks were not the most authentic of tiki and seemed a little on the weak side. However, the bartenders were really nice and were giving out rounds of shots the second night we attended. Should I find myself back in wonderful Copenhagen, so will I find myself back in BrassMonkey.

Located along busy Vesterbrogade north of the meatpacking district, you ring a door bell to get into the waiting area. Once in, the bookshelf opens into the bar space. During the week, they keep the front room open and open the back room on weekends when its more than tourists visiting. The cocktail menu is long, but even better are the bartenders. Taking pride in what they do, you can ask them to make a drink that you like. They appreciate the challenge. My friend and I both did bartender's choice and were pleased with our drinks. We also had fun chatting with the two bartenders. They asked us questions about our hometown and gave us many insights into Copenhagen life and Danish culture.

It really is worth the trip, not far from the nearest metro stop it best described as a grainy hipster bar where 99% of the clientele are locals. There are retro pictures on the walls and bicycles hanging from the roof. Apart from that it is pretty basic with no fancy edges, just a chalkboard with 10-ish craft beers from across the globe on tap. I had an amazing IPA from New Zealand which is one of the best beers I have had on this trip to Copenhagen. Definitely worth a look if you like new beers and want to get of the beaten track. I was dragged here after a hearty meal at the Ethiopian restaurant on the same street further down Nørrebrogade and this place is just perfect. I like that there are more and more craftbeer bar in Copenhagen that gives no excuse to drink a bad beer. They have their beer list on the blackboard by the bar and you could get a taste of what you will order, and since it's called Ølsnedkeren, they make their own bottled beer as well. Too bad I had to hurry home because I was drinking on a Wednesday, but I would definitely come back to this place again.
