Actually, you probably won't be flying to Denmark, so just read on. This spot is located in the meatpacking district of Copenhagen. Sure, there are lots of dirty drug users mulling about but there are also well-dressed young professionals grabbing Danish fare and Carlsberg drafts in large groups. Hands down, my favorite beer bar in Copenhagen. A tiny underground bar (with a large amount of outdoor seating) ran by the same guys from the Dark & Bitter brewery, they have a solid tap list and whereas some other bars might have a wider selection bottle list (although here you can grab a bottle of Westy 12!) , nothing can match the drinking-in-a-300-year-old cellar vibe that Fermentoren has going for it. Only lit by candles (except the beer list), it's a hygge overload haha. It was a close race between here and Himmeriget, and I might even say that they might win out some times, but for me I just couldn't get enough of the atmosphere. Although I do recall [perhaps too] loudly proclaiming that "this place smells like a sweaty sumo wrestler" on Friday night, I feel the need to officially take it all back on Monday morning. It was actually hot inside, however, (and, you know, "stuffy") but fortunately it was just below brisk outside, so sitting on the benches at the entrance was absolutely still an option. :) Drinks here were stellar. I went against the grain, like a real hipster (I'm not really a hipster), and ordered wine. Hey, that's fermented too, right? It was a divine glass of wine, I should add. The scene here is relaxed and extremely cozy. If I hadn't been on a pubcrawl with coworkers, I might've been inclined to stay all night. If you're in Vesterbro and like your beers, then Fermentoren is the place to go - it may be secondary to Mikkeller Bar to some people, but we loved it here as it's a popular basement bar that's a bit rough round the edges with good music and a large outside seating area. We came here twice during our five day stay - once when it was warm so we sat outdoors and once when it was chilly...so we sat outdoors (because inside was packed with people). If you're unlucky and don't get a table outside near the heaters then wrap up warm! There's plenty of choice at the bar with a great selection of beers for all tastes. Keep an eye out for tap takeovers by other breweries, they seem to happen regularly here. I really need to mention the gent's toilets as well, which have a few quotes from The Big Lebowski stencilled on the walls - someone here is obviously a fellow fan! read more

The feel of this bar is relaxed, homey, cozy, and young. It was crowded on a Friday night, but with a little maneuvering we managed to find a few chairs and squeeze in together at a table. There were very comfortable looking leather sofas in the far end of the bar, but those were well occupied the whole night. One thing they need in that bar is coat hooks! There were just coats piled on chairs, on the floor, and generally getting in everyone's way. I was really excited to see that they had a big selection of beers on tap and decided to try the Amager Nyhavn brown ale (since I like brown ales). However, I was really disappointed because it was not a very good brown ale and has a bitter hoppy finish that's more like an IPA. Tried a second beer which was a doppelbock and it was also a bit of a disappointment. Not that impressed with the beers I had, but I might return to see what other beers are worth trying. read more

Tucked in the basements of apartments right on the edge of Kødbyen is an extremely hygge beer bar. There are extremely comfortable Chesterfield chairs and couches where you can snuggle up and enjoy a craft beer or on certain special occasions take in a football or rugby match. No, there is not a TV but they can bring down the projector if the Kiwis are playing in the tri-nations. The beer selection is fantastic and has a great variety of craft beers both on tap and in the bottle. While I would steer you away from the smoked pig flavored beer, I tried it and while I could tell it was good beer, I also felt as if I was permeating smoked swine for the rest of the night. Other than that the Croocked Moon - Meat Market, and the dark IPA were the favorites of the table. This place is for beer drinkers who are not faint of heart. You might be able to find a "light" beer but don't count on it. It is for those individuals who like strong ales or experimenting with dark outlandishly named beers from all over the world. The price range is fare and the atmosphere is perfect for rainy winter, spring, fall, and well let's be honest summer evenings in Copenhagen. A bar that has both a great selection of beers and is themed after one of my favourite movies, The Big Lebowski, it's just to good to be true, or is it? I'm glad to say that it is very much a reality and it is located on the back streets of Vesterbro. You probably know where you are going if you end up here and even though I actually stumbled upon this place by accident a couple of years ago I suspect the majority of first-time visitors are here based on recommendation. When you first get to Fermentoren you see they have a quite spacious outdoor area that, when the climate allows for it, is populated by wooden benches. Perfect for that summer hygge in the sun with a good beer. Walk down a few stairs and you have another smaller outdoor area with heaters and benches just before you enter nirvana. ;) The atmosphere inside is very cozy with old and odd furniture scattered throughout and some of the walls have bar tables and seats along them. Something you'll notice quite early on is the very apparent Big Lebowski theme with posters of the Dude and Walter plus other movie and music characters all over the place. It will become even more apparent when you visit the toilet after a couple of litres of beer and you're greated with quotes spray painted on the walls. I don't want to spoil anything but quotes such as "Obviously you're not a golfer" or "Shomer fucking shabbos" will make fans of the movie feel right at home and I am one of them. OK, enough about Big Lebowski, what about the beer? They have a great selection of different beer, I think there are about 20 taps. There is a focus on beer that actually has taste like your IPAs and APAs and the menu changes frequently. If you're a fan of beer you will most likely find something suits your taste buds and for those of you that are tagging along a friend who is somewhat of a beer nerd, don't worry, they also have a few pilsners. They are reasonably priced and you'll get a large beer for 50DKK which is alright for a place like this. It can get crowded especially during winter when there is no outdoor tables. The crowd is very varied from young people to beer nerds, to middle aged rockers to entire families, kids included. All in all it's a great place to start or end your night, or anything in -between. read more

One of my favourite bars in Copenhagen. Well worth the walk off the normal tourist track, particularly for people into their beer and looking for somewhere with good draft craft options on tap. It's nothing fancy looks wise, in fact, think style wise of something you would see at the docks on the famous tv show "The Wire". It's grainy and edgy, but it has around 20 craft beers on tap and decent low key American retro music playing In the background. We spent about 3 hours chatting to the exceptionally friendly Australian owner about everything from beer to politics to traveling and then back to beer again. They brew their own beer called a Yippie IPA which was lovely and well worth trying. Clientele seem to be mainly quiet locals rather than tourists and there is an area to sit outside if you want to. This is the sort of place I would go all the time if there was one back home in Glasgow. Enjoy! read more

I could just imagine that it'd be nice to sit outside when the temperature is warmer in the evening This place might be for the younger soul, though since the music could be loud, or the conversation is, so if you're a little bit of more old soul like me, perhaps you could consider other "quieter" place, but otherwise, this bar is fine. read more

I've decided, after another visit to Mikkeller when the bar was manned by a dick, that this is the place I'll be going for beers in Vesterbro. I mean, honestly, there's comfy chairs, unlike the dentist's waiting room vibe in Mikkeller. While there may be fewer beers on offer here, I find them much more diverse than the range on Viktoriagade. In addition, the place is staffed by hunky and friendly Australian men, AND the toilets are a work of art. Thumbs up for a very comfy and friendly hangout. read more

Fermentoren was located nary a block from where we were AirBNB-ing on our trip, and once we first came we were here every night for two drinks until the end of our stay. Super-cool, conversational, chill subterranean bar with a killer beer list. The best of Denmark, some American offerings, plus. . . Three Floyds?!?!?!? One of the best breweries in the USA and only distributed near Chicago? Yep and Yep. Wow. Drafts were 30k for a small, 50k for a pint, some were 35/55. Not too bad, similar pricing to nearby Mikkeller. Not as crowded as it was there at any point, but with a better crowd and nearly as good beer list I can't complain at all. Each time while there we chatted with locals. This is a locals bar, with some Americans (one behind the bar) where English is spoken heavily. Comfortable seating with a welcoming crowd - rarely did one group command a full table, there was no territoriality there. Great beer got us here, but the vibe, the feel, and the people kept us coming back every night. If I was to possibly ever live in Copenhagen, I'd push to live near here, because of this bar. That's the most love I could ever give to a bar, and Fermentoren deserves it. read more

Fermentoren is warm, cozy and welcoming, and has a wide range of the best beers available in Denmark & Sweden. The staff is super welcoming and the space is cool and funky. The neighborhood nearby (Vesterbro) is a weird mix of sketchy (including working girls on the corner) and hipster/trendy, which I suppose is a common location for a place like this to pop up. They have a little courtyard outside, and I suppose in summer days that might be a pleasant place to hang out. read more

In recent years, a number of great beer places have opened in Copenhagen, but even in that crowd Fermentoren stands out, if you like micro-brewed beer. The selection of beer is great, and ever-changing, with a tendency towards darker beers (stouts) or IPAs. Not bad in my opinion. If you, however, want a lager or pilsner, you'll be hard pressed to find it here. At least on tap - I'm sure that there are several bottled version you can get. It can get crowded, and the comfort of the chairs vary somewhat, but all in all, it is a great place to go, if you like craft beer. read more

Loved this cosy bar. It has a great selection of tap beer and a very helpful and friendly personnel that can help you find what you are looking for in terms of taste. It's really cosy inside and has a bunch of different seating groups: sofas, bar tables, bar and patio. The bar is just outside kødbyen (meat packing district) and is often full of people. It has an outdoor patio with heating lamps where one can enjoy a beer and smoke as well. On weekdays they close at midnight. With a broad selection on tap or bottle they have something for everybody, as well as a great atmosphere. If you're not a beer person, but your friends/family are, you can usually find a cider on tap or the staff will fix you up something else. Oh my gosh. Without doubt the best beer bar I have come across, globally, in my 31 years of life. Totally unassuming venue but passionate and proud about their 20 beers on tap. Served in a great, dimly lit setting, with sizes ranging from 25CL, 500CL, and 1000CL, allowing you to taste a good variety, or get sloshed on your favorite once you've decided. The bar staff love life, love beer even more, and will educate you on beer, or just chat with you like a good friend. They gypsy brew their beers meaning they brew it themselves but at other breweries since they don't have a license to brew on site, and frankly nowhere near enough room to do so. Beer heads, or people looking for a low key place with a good atmosphere, good music at a good volume to create atmosphere but allow for conversation....visit here! read more

Out of the beer bars that I visited while in Denmark in December, this one was probably my favorite. I would love to visit this place again some time. It's a dimly lit basement bar with comfortable, intimate seating, a nice bar, and really friendly bartenders. They are all really helpful if you have questions about the beers. This is only regarding the AMAZING beers that they had available. Their "home brew" dry/bitter had some of the best IPAs that I've ever tasted. I honestly cannot remember a better BEER pub. Can't comment on the food or their normal beer offerings but this time that I was there was unreal. We came here for a few beers before heading to dinner in the area. The place wasn't packed, though we got there on the earlier side (maybe 6:00). There was a small bar area with stools, a handful of indoor tables, and some picnic tables outside which were sheltered from the elements. There were a few heaters out there, which was nice. We ended up sitting outside. Despite it being rainy and raw out, it was comfortable with the heaters. Compared to some of the other bars in the neighborhood that we visited, this was a bit of dive bar. Dark and moody inside. Looks like the perfect place for an intense conversation. The staff was extremely knowledgeable regarding what was on tap. There were about two dozen beers or so on draft. We stayed for about three rounds, each time sampling something different. My friends and I all have quite different tastes in beers, so while I didn't love some of their choices, they did and that's the most important. We all found plenty of choices that we liked which made it a great destination. If I am back in this neighborhood, I will definitely return to this spot for a few pints. read more

I wanted to get a local beer but couldn't find one I liked so went for a beer from a Norwegian brewery called Lervig. I may have said 'close enough' but that was only to wind up my Danish buddies. They brew their own - the IPA is very tasty, and stock a shed-load of others, including the other local hero, Mikkeller. Hands down. This is the best beer bar in Denmark. It's not modern, there are no TVs, not many beers to chose from, it's dark and strange, and it smells kinda funny. But WOW the beers are good. When I lived in Denmark,for months straight I'd visit this place twice a week after work with a good friend of mine. We'd always drink at least three or four beers before going on our way. Never any other bar in Copenhagen. You want the authentic "hyggeligt" experience...it can't be beat. I love this place so much, I made myself a vinyl decal for my car from their logo. I stumbled upon it quite by accident while on my way to the nearby Mikkeller Bar; it might be easy to miss if you weren't actively seeking it. When I visited, it was night time and the bar was moodily lit, with candles providing most of the illumination. Not a big place and certainly quite rough and divey, Fermentoren is a serious place for serious beer people. Featuring 24 taps of varying styles from Denmark, Belgium and even the US, and a deep bottle list with rarities like Westvleteren 12 (!!!), there's something there for all tastes. Awesome Micro-brew-serving place. The Bartenders all seem to be from New Zealand and know the beer they serve well and are very helpful in answering questions. They serve about 20 draft beers at a time, and tend to change the beer whenever the cask runs out. Hence, you will probably not be able to get the same beer every time. Not that you should be interested in that, of course, as that would not be the point of the place. The beer costs 50 DKK for a 0.4 l which is comparable to Mikkeller and Nørrebro Bryghus. The toilets are clean, and from what Ive heard, the ladies toilets as well. The inside of the bar is dark with lots of random crap on the wall, making the place cosy. Also they light candles. The downside is that the large seating-area outdoors is next to an intersection or surrounded by concrete-graffiti-painted walls if choosing to sit on the lower grounds . +around 20 drafted beers on tap (basically only micro-brews) +High rotation on drafted beers (they change them as soon as a cask runs out and replace them with a different brew) +Friendly service +Cosy indoor seating +Large outdoor seating-area -outdoor seating next to semi-calm intersection (its in the city - duh) read more
