This spot is a great place to stop for a delicious fish soup. It was a bit crowded, so we sat by the windows inside. If you can, try to sit at an outdoor table. The fish soup was really filling and had lots of mixed seafood. However, the meatball dish was a bit disappointing-- I've had better ones at IKEA. The service was friendly and there is an English menu on the wall.

The best Swedish meatballs I had to date!! What a great place to have them, in Stockholm!! Make reservations, this place is popular. It is located in old town. Enjoy!!

Fika time - cinnamon roll and chocolate cake

Came here at the start of a walking tour and ended here to have a nice Fika. Enjoyed the pastries, but they had shut down eating inside so we had to sit at a side part of the cafe which wasn't very temperate. Have outdoor seating as well. Very nice place to stop and rest.

Walked by at midday, thought it looked cute. During the day it is a bit cheaper and you can order and buy inside, then sit outside (very nice). Not quite sure what their lunch menu looks like, but they did have some pastries out on the counter. In the evening, took us a bit to be seated (pretty busy Sunday night) and for us to get a menu in our hands, but once we ordered the food came super fast. The menu is pretty limited (although the options look good). Nice atmosphere and deco. Maybe a bit understaffed (overworked waiters). The meatballs were really good, as was the Mushroom soup. Definitely on the pricey side but I guess that's to be expected?

My Swedish Meatballs dinner here.

I just checked into the Scandic Continental hotel a couple of hours prior and walked over to the Gamla Stan (Old Town Island) on a Thursday night to find a place for Swedish Meatballs primarily. I was not going back to the USA without eating Swedish Meatballs in Sweden--I am not sure they would have let me back on the plane. The place was packed on a Thursday night. I ordered the smoked salmon appetizer and the Swedish meatballs dinner--now that's what I call immersing yourself in the local culture immediately. The table bread was the best! Incredible bread. The Salmon was very good and the Swedish meatballs which comes with mashed potatoes and berries and pickles were fine, but I will tell you that after that meal I don't need to have Swedish meatballs again anywhere. But Swedish meatballs are very popular here. A couple sat next to me and just immediately ordered 2 plates of Swedish meatballs. I was just not crazy about the taste--they may have been the best, I can't compare because I never had them before, but just not my type of food. Service here was fine--it's efficient, not very friendly, but they get the job done. Hardest part about eating here is finding you way out of the maze of streets and back to your hotel.

Searching for food in Gamla Stan, the old town of Stockholm I decided to head for Under Kastanjen after reading some good Yelp reviews and hearing about their gluten-free offerings - their whole menu can be made gluten-free if you ask and they also make their own gluten-free bread, fresh at their gluten-free bakery which can come with your meal for no additional charge if you ask for it. This place is rather hard to find - up many cobbled hills and side streets in the Old Town - a fairly historic part of town which I sadly don't see the hype about. This place is step-free with wheelchair access through a ramp and a lift to the toilets. Be warned if you are visiting on weekends or the evenings - service can be a little slow (I had to wait a while with no reception from the staff for a few minutes) to even find out I may not get a table, after a few more minutes they managed to find out they had a spare - I presume this was down to a large number of reservations as the place had many empty tables. - To be fair once I was sat down the staff were great, attentive and helpful in explaining about gluten-free, offering me bread and making sure I always had tap water! - Service also sped up as soon as I got inside the restauraunt, as I managed to get my food rather quickly. I ordered the meatball dish having wanted to try some real, authentic Swedish meatballs during my time in Sweden - I wanted to find a place to get them safe and gluten-free so I was delighted to find it at last here. I wouldn't say the menu selection was too broad or exciting other than this dish, however (on the mains at least) - I'm not sure if the gluten and non-gluten version differed however as it did state "all dishes can be made gluten-free" rather than are, so make sure to specify if you're a celiac/coeliac when ordering! When my food came - I was a little disappointed with the portion size as there were only five meatballs along with the rest of the dish, however, I found the meatballs to be quite large they were filling which made me even struggle to finish. The meatballs were seasoned well, some parts were slightly undercooked but it was nothing that meant the food wasn't edible - I found the rich, juicy gravy sauce to add great flavour and it made the whole dish go great, I even had some with my mashed potatoes, which were already flavourful and creamy but that gravy just added a little bit more. I did find the lingonberries with the dish to be unusual however it is rather common in Swedish cuisine and much to my surprise - I did enjoy them. My meal came to 195 krona - I was offered the chance to pay in krona or pounds via my debit card - however, the option to pay in pounds is virtually a scam as the exchange rate they wanted was really shitty and would have cost me quite a bit more - luckily I had my Monzo card which lets me use my debit card for free with no FX fees at Mastercard exchange rate. The prices I did find to the reasonable for Stockholm standards, but perhaps more expensive than I'd pay in the UK - again I found this to be common during my trip. The whole atmosphere of the place was semi-formal, it is open to kids (there was one crying during my visit), it is a tad small as well so it is really important to make sure you have a booking at peak times. The gluten-free bread I must add was actually quite nice - it didn't have that horrible dryness which most gluten-free breads have but the fact it has currents in made it more like a teacake or dessert so it just didn't compliment my meatball dish at all - some things like lingonberries worked as it goes well with sweet and savoury, but sadly the bread just didn't. 4* - Probably the best meal I've had during my time in Stockholm, the fact they were able to cater extensively for gluten-free is something to be proud of, it is quite awkward to find though due to its location within the Old Town and they surely should be doing more to allow people to pay in their own currency at a fair exchange rate, especially for people unlike myself who don't have a bank which gives them free FX fees.

Gluten free folks, rejoice! Located in precious Gamla Stan, this place was perfect to visit while out walking around. I got a Swiss roll from their dedicated gluten free bakery (!!!) and a latte and took a seat downstairs. There are several seating areas, so it was pretty easy to find a spot even in peak tourist season. I was pretty impressed with my pastry, though I did not try the gluten free sandwiches and things that are also available. From the look of them, I bet they are delicious. If you find yourself in Stockholm's old town and need a celiac safe place to go, this is your spot!

Was in Stockholm for four days, and dinner here was one of my fav food experiences in the city. It's such a cute and cozy place, and the owner is super nice. Our dining table looked out the window onto the patio and the side streets of Gamla Stan. We had the meatballs (with mashed potatoes and lingonberries) and the skagentoast (like a shrimp salad on toast). Both were superb. The complimentary bread before the mains were sooo good. My friend has celiac, and our whole meal was gluten-free. They actually have a dedicated gluten-free bakery!

The place looks nice buy it is divided on two sections: the restaurant has a view outside on the nice street, while the cafe is basically four chairs in an alcove! We only needed some soft drinks buy it seemed ridiculous to sit in a small alcove! I cannot recommend visiting this place for soft drinks. UPDATE: we gave it another try and today we visited the place again. It was for lunch this time so were seated at the main sall. We both tried the traditional meatball dish and one of the cakes. The gluten-free bread we ordered was probably the worst we ever tried. It was overly sweet and with much moisture on the bottom that reminded me of a sweet cakes! The meatballs were just OK - nothing to look forward to. Then it is the cake...it was so sweet that we barely touched it. Overall a very mediocre experience at best.

Pretty place. Nice service wear. Dry, stale citrus cake and lukewarm cappuccino? Ehhhh. Every time I'm stopped by the charm of a place I find that it does not live up to the look.

This is gluten free dairy free lemon cake. Tastes like a crumbled angel food cake with lemon frosting. Very good!

Those afflicted by food allergies: UNITE! This place is awesome. I can't have gluten or dairy, and was more than satisfied with their gluten free/dairy free cake. I also got a Soymilk latte and a Lacks (smoked salmon) salad. Both were awesome, and was given two large portions of salmon for my single salad. The people working there were knowledgable about the allergens and were more than happy to accommodate. It was 200 SEKK for all three item, which in Scandinavia, is amazing. Would highly recommend. Side note: half of their baked goods are gluten free and most are dairy free.

This cafe restaurant is located in a stunning part of Gämla Stan. Offers lunch specials with free coffee/tea and bread with it. The food was very fresh, I got the salmon salad special, which included new potatoes and salad. I also got one of the beautiful variety of cakes, many gluten free! I got the baked cheesecake which was delicious! The decor is nice an quant with a comfortable seating. Overall I give this spot a 4 out of 5. Nice location, fresh food and good selection of treats. However I would have liked my food to have come with a better side than a very basic salad which consisted of 3 slices of cucumber, 2 bits of tomato and some shredded lettuce. My cheese cake was really good but the portion was quite small for the cost.

I wish I had more time to try Petrus, but for a quick fika on a busy day exploring Stockholm, it…read moremore than exceeded expectations. I can't tell if the multitude of American reviews are because 1) Petrus has managed to attract tourists; 2) these particular Americans have taste; 3) Swedish people don't really use Yelp; or 4) some combination thereof. Needless to say, Petrus was recommended by some other friends who had previously visited Stockholm as the go-to for buns. It is well worth the trip. As many have noted, the storefront is small and tucked away off of a fairly high traffic pedestrian thorough fare. Given how many people are obsessed with staring into their phones, surely following google maps to the address won't be tough, but I've learned to lower my expectations of people over time. ANYWAY, I was pleased to stop into a coffee shop that wasn't Espresso House or Fabrique, the latter of which I'm lucky enough to enjoy at home. I was able to grab a seat by the door which gave an interior view (through a window) to their bakery which occupies the other space on the first floor of their building. Despite the baking appearing done for the day at that time, it was neat to see the machinery behind the delectable treats we were having. Coffee was straightforward and lacking in pretension, as you served yourself from the drip coffee thermos in the restaurant. As many have suggested, I'm sure the kanelbulle would have been as tasty as the kardamummabulle and "breakfast bun" (a slightly sweet combo of various nuts and seeds) I had. Everything was quick, pleasant, and tasty, just as a coffee shop / fika place should be; in a quiet, residential area which was relaxing; and a perfect beginning to get the day jump started.

My favorite bakery that we've had on our trip. Ok I forgot the name of one of the buns, but it was…read moresoft and buttery and so good! The cardamom buns were good too. Definitely not as sweet as some of the other places, which is why I liked it

Located on a largely residential street not far from the Metro Station and open seven-to-seven on Weekdays with slightly shorter hours on weekends, at least one Baker still present approaching 16h00 and presumably working on items for the next day, it was after browsing still-full shelves that six items were selected, the Café upstairs offering a pleasant place to dine as the majority of patrons filled seats outside. Using slightly different nomenclature than other Konditori around Stockholm, the Wienerbrod for instance dubbed Vaniljbulle thanks to the flavor of thick Custard inside its fluffy golden coils, it was with Princess Cake dressed pretty in Pink that one of the city's best slices was found, at least five separate layers including Cream and Raspberry Compote contributing to Pound Cake that was more buttery than others but still surprisingly light. Not about to pass on the classic Fika focused on throughout nine days in Sweden, Åsö's Cardamom Bun more leavened than others and thus open beneath the sugared top with a nice stretch to the Dough, it was with a dual layer of the same Raspberry Jam tasted earlier that a Katalan Tart shined while the Tosca also performed admirably, the now-predictable Chokladbol in this instance occurring by way of a "Lillebror" that replaced with Pearl Sugar around the Chocolate and Oat core.

Fine fine Nordic eating…read more * * * This is a bakery/cafe that covers the four basic food groups: 1) Bread 2) Pastry 3) Coffee 4) Lunch Five stars on all of the above. * * * Recipes here are standard Swedish. Where they make their mark is in execution. Let's start with the drip coffee. You know how in "Pulp Fiction" and "Twin Peaks" a running gag is Coffee that is so good, everyone stops everything they are doing to comment on how good the coffee is? Aso's drip coffee could be that amazing stop-everything coffee. My only regret is that I did not have Kyle MacLachlan or Harvey Keitel with me to enjoy a cup. * * * Lunch was Raksmorgas, a standard Swedish dish of shrimp, fresh dill, lemon, tomatoes and homemade mayonnaise on thinly sliced rye bread. Aso's adds a hard-boiled egg to the proceedings. What was so good about this? Just about everything. The shrimp were small but packed with flavor. Imagine the flavor intensity of a salami, but in small cold shrimp. Fresh dill is always wonderful. Fresh dill can make cardboard taste good. The hard boiled eggs were perfectly timed. Bright golden moist-crumbly yellow yolks. Most restaurants give you over-boiled rubbery yellow-green yolks. Net of cooking time, the eggs themselves were a lot better than the old commercial refrigerator eggs we get in the United States. I suspect these were fresh eggs. The decadent treat was the rye bread on the bottom. This covered with homemade mayonnaise. The difference between homemade mayonnaise and jar mayonnaise is like the difference between a real kiss and a picture of a kiss. The mayonnaise drips into the rye bread. So do the flavor leavings of the shrimp and the egg and the tomato. The result? Bread to die for. Sopping up the good stuff from your meal with bread is always good. Sopping up the good stuff from your meal with superior Swedish rye bread is over the top excellent. * * * How is the bakery as a bakery? Love of the life got a walnut bread with her salad that was first rate. It was stick to your ribs stuff. One roll's worth of walnut bread and you were fed for a week. And totally walnutted to boot. On the dessert side, they do have decadent blow-all-the-calories desserts. But many Swedish pastries are in the same family with English scones. These are meant to be a snack by themselves. Substantial. Restrained. Subtle but worthwhile flavor. I had a Katalan which is two thin layers of lingonberry filling between three layers of substantial pie crust. Katalan means "from Catalonia" and naturally there is nothing more Spanish than lingonberries. (Cough cough). Not a good dessert choice after a heavy meal, but it would have been perfect with coffee at four in the afternoon. * * * Overall, an absolutely fine establishment. And even better if your world stops spinning for good coffee.
