Their special the day we went was interesting so that's what I got. The special that night (forgot what it's called) but it was with glass noodles and brisket of sorts. What pleasantly surprised me was some of the ingredient choices as they felt familiar with my mother's cooking. The glass noodles were a little difficult to separate into one bite without making a mess. My fiancee got a vege ramen of sorts which she liked. The service was a little slow but to be fair, they were quite busy when we went. Overall, it was an enjoyable experience for us. So I've been here twice now. The first time I was not impressed. I think I got tokontsu.... Like others have said you have to know how to order here. The pork belly is not great here IMO. Flavorless and not tender. But the minced pork is fantastic! So swap them out. I also feel very strongly about wavy noodles versus thin noodles. Always swap those out too. Chilli oil makes everything better all the time so always ask for that for the table (it's free). Tonight I ordered the spicy miso but added minced pork and half egg. Always add the egg!! Always. The egg is the best. Tonight's order was far better than the last time I came here. And I owe it to the other reviews on this page. The only thing was there wasn't enough broth at all. Not nearly enough liquid and it felt almost thick. Still good. I also took someone's advice and tried the pork gyoza with chili oil - delicious!!! So so good. And it came with a good amount too (I hate when you just get 3). We were all very pleased with our orders. The service here is always really good. Uncommon Ramen hits all the right spots with classic Japanese dishes done perfectly. Small and quaint, walking into Uncommon Ramen reminded me of walking into a restaurant in Japan. Service was fast and wonderfully polite and the food came out quick and piping hot. The pork in the boa buns was tender and delicious with the perfect accompaniments to make it the complete package. The takoyaki were crispy on the outside, creamy on the inside, and tasted as authentic as any I've had here and overseas. The tonkatsu ramen was was true to its name - creamy broth, tender chasu, perfectly chewy noodles. The part that seems to be most difficult for ramen shops seems to be the egg. So I went here for dinner with a few friends on a. Friday night. It was just okay in my opinion and maybe it's because my friend hyped it up too much that I was disappointed. I got the tantan ramen it was lightly flavored. So it wasn't too impressive. I did add an egg and the egg was probably the most impressive thing about the ramen dish. My other friend got the soupless tantan noodles and thought it was ok. The pork bao bun with the hoisin sauce was good. The chicken Bao bun with the aioli is better than the chicken with the hoisin sauce but it's just shredded chicken on the bun so I wasn't all that wow'd by it. read more

Delicious ramen spot in downtown Phoenixville! Ok, so this place has 3.5 stars as of the time i'm writing this review, and i kinda get it. Don't get me wrong, i love this place and I order from it frequently during the colder months. First off, the appetizers. The gyoza are delicious, both in the pork sweet ginger sauce and the spicy chili sauce. My go-to is the pork gyoza in the ginger sauce and the chicken dumplings in the chili sauce. I personally find the pork dumplings a little bland without that sauce, imo. Also, bao buns, yum! however, two buns for over $10 is steep in my opinion, and they are okay, but not ground breaking. I generally avoid them at this point since i find the gyoza more flavorful and a better value. Chicken gyoza with spicy chili sauce is where it's at for me. As for the ramen, it's delicious, or some of them at least. The Tan Tan is absolutely delicious, and you can customize the amount of heat you get. I typically get hot, and I ask for half (or less) of the bok choy. They generally let you customize everything that goes in, but for some reason, when ordering online or through a delivery app, you can't customize the bok choy. I personally find it very bitter, and the physical structure of it makes it a bit difficult to eat. The bitterness of the green adds to the flavor of the ramen, but honestly, i wish there was less bok choy in there. The Tori Paitan is quite good, lots of flavor, and again, customizable. The Tonkatsu, on the other hand, is quite bland. That seems to be a thing with this place - bland pork. Not sure why, but stick with the chicken or minced pork instead. Also, top marks for making (almost) everything customizable. Change the noodle type, get extra noodles, add eggs, scallions, etc., whatever you want. That's pretty ideal. And they've always been willing to accommodate my requests, so also ideal. So honestly, i can see why some folks give it three stars, but i've ordered from here far too many times to give it any less than a four. Definitely give it a shot, but stick with the spicy or chicken dishes. read more

(They share the space with another restaurant, Sol Kitchen!) So this was the third time before I actually found them open. However, as much as I tried to love it, I just couldn't. The only thing I can say that's really good is the semi-soft egg. Nothing else had any flavor. The broth was bland, the noodles were tasteless. There was absolutely no seasoning to anything. The thing special about Ramen is the broth. It should be complex and deep, something that takes hours to make. I could open a pack of 25¢ ramen at home, add some vegetables, and have more flavor than what was in this dish. A server came around to ask how things were after we finished. I asked if he wanted to hear that things were fine or if he wanted the truth. He said the truth, so I told him. He said the owner was Cantonese, making that seem like that was the excuse. My reply was it doesn't matter who is cooking, as long as they use good recipes. He could be Cantonese, Japanese, or from anywhere, but if he takes the time to research and get a good recipe, that is fine. If someone opens their doors and calls it "A Ramen place" just because Ramen is getting trendy, well that's not OK and don't expect people who know any better will come back. The best thing I can say is that things are cheap. $11.99-$13.99. I've spent a lot of time in Japan, so I do know a little bit about Ramen. Will I be going back again? Stopped in for some nourishment after a massage. I ordered the spicy ramen with tofu and I had such Hugh hopes based on the reviews. Perhaps I misunderstood or am uninformed but I didn't expect a tomato type base broth which made the entire dish taste like spaghetti-o's. After my initial review several years ago, I've been back to Uncommon Ramen several times. The food, in my opinion, is still good. So what's changed? The service. This is still a small space, and they're doing takeout orders on top of seated tables. They're DEFINITELY prioritizing the to go orders. I've been here twice now where we've sat for well over an hour and a half, for ramen. Don't come starving, because it's going to be a while. Example - I'm sitting at the restaurant right now. After getting a table, we waited 10-15 minutes to place our order, bao buns and ramen (table for two). 30 minutes after that, the bao buns show up. I asked about how much longer from here till we get our food, and they said 10 minutes but were definitely unsure. Almost an hour to just eat apps? Not great. The food is good, I'd recommend it if you have the time, but I wish they'd get a larger space and some more servers to better accommodate both the seated tables as well as the to go orders. read more

We love this place! We've tried other restaurants on this strip but always come back to this one. The gyoza are the best I've had anywhere in Philly. Also the bao buns, too. The sauces for both are amazing- try both the spicy and non for the gyoza and the hoisin and the spicy for the buns. We've tried most of the ramen on the menu and they've all been really great- tonkatsu, tan tan, paitan, miso. I'm surprised by the less than 4 stars - frankly I think it's some of the best ramen I've had anywhere in Philly. Add the delicious half egg- and I like the chewier wavy noodles than the thin ones. As I heard a new Ramen shop opened its door, I wanted to visit this place for a while. Finally time has come. While I was reading reviews, I had somewhat good expectations. ...well, honestly I can see a great potential, but...sadly I can only give 3 stars at this point. First issue is operation. Despite early hours (just after opening hour), it took quite while until Ramen bowl was served, like 30 minutes after ordered. Typically, I expect Ramen to be served rather within short period of time, like 10 min or less. Unless you wait in a line for your order to be served on very busy shop. Hopefully they will find the way to serve their ramen bowls in much shorter time than 30 minutes. The best part on Tonkotsu Ramen was its broth. Nicely done...tasteful and flavorful. I would say one of best Tonkotsu soup around. Next good thing was Chashu Pork. It was Very authentic style and a little finishing touch with torch burner added nice flavor on meat. Unfortunately, noodles were...questionable despite good broth. Overly cooked and chewy as if noodles were frozen after cooked once. This was really sad because broth was so good. Small but mighty. Small menu but they do it well. For some reason good ramen is hard to come by in this area but this place fills the niche nicely. I always get the bao buns as an appetizer and you should as well. The broth has good flavor and they don't skimp on toppings or noodles. My friend recommended this place to me and my partner few weeks ago. We came on a Sunday around 6:30pm. Upon entering, it looked busy however I still hoped for the best. We were greeted by the waitress telling us to have a seat, she would be right with us with waters and menus, great! Well not so much because after waiting twenty minutes in this cramped, humid spot watching them prioritize take out orders, we are given room temperature water without ice paired with a blunt "what do you want". I tell the waitress we never got a menu and we just need three minutes. After deciding and walking past us at least five times and ten minutes later, I ask the waitress if we can place our order around 6:50. She looked at me like she completely forgot we ever arrived. My partner and I ordered Tonkotsu and Tan Tan. I asked for no bamboo shoots and to add bean sprouts. Maybe it was my own fault for being hungry before I came to a restaurant but at the 40 minute mark I couldn't help but ask the waitress if they had started making our food. She seemed very hesitant and said "uh yeah of course" and quickly turns away even though I wasn't finished speaking. I grabbed her attention again and asked if she could please go check if they had started to make our food. At this point my partner and I were contemplating the new Dim Sum place across the street instead. She comes back out and says they started to make it, but 15 more minutes pass and finally the table before us comes out! Then ten minutes later so does ours. They did not get my order correct, and I tried to tell the waitress but I was interrupted with a rude " no no no I'll be right there with your chopsticks". The couple who sat down about thirty minutes after we did, their food came out right after my partner's. All this and I was hoping for some good ramen, but it was a three out of ten, having had authentic ramen before. Awful service. Ramen in the suburbs is tough to find but this place is great. The spot is small, so take-out might be an option if you don't want to wait. Apparently they've been open for a short time (make sure you check the hours before you decide to go). I'm a fan and only gave it 4 stars because the wait time was kind of long.
