I've been coming to Uncle Ed's for ice cream since I was a child... If you want excellent ice cream, this is your place. if you want good food, accurate food orders, and customer service - this is not the place. We don't live super nearby anymore but after seeing how lovely the lobster rolls looked online, we decided to come down and get some for Mother's Day. We called at 1:30 to place a pre-order for some lobster rolls. We were told that NO orders could be placed until the kitchen opens up at 3:30. We asked if they would at least take our order down as a pre-order and leave it for the kitchen to work on once they opened. We were told no, call back at 3:30. We called back promptly at 3:30 and were told that all Lobster rolls were sold out as they had been taking orders for them for several hours now. I expressed some frustration here as we didn't understand why others were able to place orders for Lobster rolls before the kitchen opened. The young person on the phone simply said that she's not sure why we were told that when we called - but that they were sold out. We placed a different food order at this time which included: 2 fried clam plates and an order of chicken fingers + more & ice cream pints. We asked them to confirm that they would be able to make these meals with no issue. We were told yes, no problem. (Ultimately we found out that that they had been taking pre-orders since the day before and that we were told to call back at 3:30 because only the kitchen staff (who arrives closer to 3:30) would be able to tell us if they would have enough lobster left to accommodate our order. I wish that had been explained to us at 1:30 because then we would have assumed it was not likely that we would be able to get them - and we would have made a secondary dinner plan to find them elsewhere. Instead, based on what we were told over the phone, it led us to believe that they weren't starting to take ANY orders until 3:30...so of course we would assume that calling AT 3:30 meant we'd have no real issue. Anyway...) We arrived to pick up the food and were told that the chicken fingers had sold out. We were also told that they had told us that over the phone already. (Nope...otherwise we wouldn't have arrived expecting them) ...Oh well - we paid for the remainder of our order and were on our way. We began to unpack the food and discovered that food was missing. Both of the fried clam plates ($19 each) were supposed to come with clam cakes. There were no clam cakes in either meal. I called them and explained that we're missing the clam cakes for those plates. I'm told that they ran out of clam cakes. I let them know that no one told us this when we came to pick up the food. They say that we were supposed to have been given corn fritters instead of the clam cakes. I let them know that we were not given corn fritters either. (and also were not even told that a substitution needed to be made in the first place) I asked if we were charged the entire $19 per plate and I'm told yes, we would have been charged the entire amount. I told them I'd like to give them my card number so that way some sort of refund for the missing clam cakes could be processed. The phone is handed to someone else. The new person I'm speaking with tells me that they cannot process a card refund over the phone, they need the card there in person. I let them know that coming back down wasn't going to be possible. I'm then told that the only way to refund me would be a gift certificate that they can hold there for me. Sadly, we don't live close by. Ultimately she offered to mail it to me, which was a nice gesture certainly, but it was at this point that I realized that not a single time had someone said "We're sorry this happened." or "We're sorry we weren't more clear about that..." or "So sorry we couldn't complete your order..." Had someone, anyone, expressed even a little bit of an apology along the way - I'd have said "Hey, it happens, no worries..." But at this point I was beyond frustrated and so I said yes, please do mail it to us then. You're crazy-busy on Mother's Day - I get it. I've been there. You have some inconsistent (and unclear) messages coming out from staff - No one is perfect. You're out of various items and incorrectly charge for incomplete meals - Ok, just make it right. But good customer service and a "we're so sorry about that" would have gone A LONG WAY... But this left me frustrated, without the food items we wanted at EACH step along the way, and nothing but the equivalent of a *shrug emoji* from anyone we dealt with. Support this long-standing small business with ice cream sales, the ice cream truly is WONDERUL - but be cautious regarding food orders. (I initially wrote this review as 2-stars. I decided to bump it to 3-stars since the ice cream IS that good...and it's been a local staple for years and a part of my child hood. Went for lunch and ice cream. The service was excellent. The girls working there genuinely care about the customers. The ice cream was second to none. Some of the best I've ever had. Now for the food. Mediocre at best. We had a bland lobster roll. The bang bang shrimp portion size was very good the flavor was non existent. The frozen stuffies should have stayed frozen. Mushy and like the other foods, lacking flavor. The kitchen forgot 1/2 of one of our orders and sent it out a few minutes later. DEFINITELY go for the ice cream. You will not be disappointed. Been in for ice cream a few times, it's good. Decided to try the seafood and it was not good. The clam chowder.. looked and tasted more like chicken and dumpling soup?... spent $50 on chowder, clam cakes and a fisherman's platter. Chowder was horrible, some of the clam cakes were raw, a lot of the fried food on the platter was undercooked. Threw 75% in the trash. Never again for anything but ice cream. We spent $25 on fish and chips that were soggy wet. The pieces of fish were small. Just awful. The ice cream we've had there before is homemade and delicious so we do recommend that. A man who lives in the house right next door walked directly into Uncle Ed's kitchen through a side door without a shirt on and with his shorts halfway down his bum. A hidden gem in the middle of nowhere (well, technically, on Rte. 44 virtually the midpoint between Providence and Taunton); yet definitely worth the drive. I had no idea that I had an Uncle Ed, yet now that I've met the man and eaten his unbelievable ice cream, clams, scallops, .... we'll be more frequent visitors. The first time we found UEFP, we sampled a number (too many by most shop standards) of fantastic ice cream flavors then finally selected our faves - special shout-out to the GingerSnap Molasses (OMG!!!). A few days later we decided to head back to refuel our GSM cravings (dare I say OMG again?) - wowee!! This time, while enjoying our ice cream outside, Uncle Ed himself came out to say hi, and (oh by the way) "here's a fresh batch of fried clams and scallops - on the house". Huh?!?!? who does that these days? The clams were light and flavorful and the scallops were beyond delicious. When we informed Ed that our 9y.o. daughter was allergic to shellfish, he apologized (are you kidding me? certainly not necessary) and then brought her a basket of fries, also complimentary. When I first took my daughter to Uncle Ed's, I wasn't sure what to expect. It sort of looks out of place, like the location was chosen at random, which is probably why it took us so long to pop in for a cone. When you open the door and step inside, you are immediately in a whole different world. A simpler world, where the biggest challenge you have to face is what flavor of ice cream you want. Ok, this is a follow up to my 2 star review. The chowder here is absolutely horrible. I mean it's gross, if you closed your eyes and I put a spoonful in your mouth, you would never, never ever guess what it was. It's slime. Two reviews have been posted recently by reviewers with 1 review each, they are new profiles specifically created to boost reviews. Came here on Mother's Day from a recommendation on a Facebook Moms Page. We're new to the area and was looking for a new local fish spot. I came here already knowing it was going to be busy so I was prepared for waiting. We ordered 3 entree's. The girl behind the counter told us 30 min. Not a problem. Drove down the street to get a coffee, came back, waited some more and went in about 25 min later to show my face and let them know I was here Incase they were looking for me. Went back outside. Went back inside 15 min later, (10 min after the 30 min estimate) girl offered us some ice cream. Great customer service, made my daughter happy. Not a huge deal they're 10 min late. I've been in the industry most of my life and I get it, things happen. Ok, now it's been 60 min. Went back in. Now I'm not bugging them, they're noticing 'I've been there a very long time' Girl offered us another ice cream and I asked for a Frappe. Kids are cranky and driving me absolutely nuts at this point. We get our food shortly after but I've lost track of time at this point. Food comes, we're opening the bags in the truck to dig in because we are STARVING at this point. No utensils, no napkins, no ketchup, and they forgot my order of onion rings. Like WTF? It's TAKE-OUT only so do I need to ask for utensils and napkins and ketchup? Not only shouldn't I not have to ask, but after waiting over a hour for food, someone should have made sure to check our bags to make sure we had everything we needed and to make sure we had everything we ordered. I honestly would have gave this place another shot even though we waited because the food was pretty good, but poor management on someone not checking and giving our bags a little TLC to make sure we were good after spending $60. This place ranked high and rightly so The ice cream cone sign on the outside may give the impression that this is just ice cream place but. It is much more. I had the small fish and chips and it was excellent. The fish was fresh and perfectly cook and the fries were spot on. My only regret was not taking a photo of the meal (next time). Every summer, when I get back from college, I come here and get a pint of their oreo ice cream. Although it looks kind of uninviting from the outside, I urge you to go outside of your comfort zone and go here. Uncle Ed's has some really, really good ice cream. I've tried many flavors, and they are indeed homemade. They have that tender love and care in their ice cream, and it shows. The staff is really friendly, and willing to get you anything. They've got a good list of flavors to choose from too. The inside is cute, and decorated nicely, so you can take a seat and enjoy your dessert while you eat. They do have soft-served ice cream, though, I believe! It's only chocolate and vanilla, but they primarily specialize in their homemade stuff, so it's not that surprising. [Edit] I'm not sure why it's saying that this shop has closed? I drove past it yesterday and it was open, with a full parking lot. I went because they had made a special ice cream flavor some kid friends who frequent the place. They were out of that flavor, but I ended up trying the caramel cashew turtle, was not disappointed. The ice cream was delicious. The staff was super friendly, and the owner was a delight. While my partner and I were enjoying our generous cones, the owner brought us out samples of some whole belly fried clams, clam cakes, chowder and buffalo wings that Uncle Ed's has started serving on weekend nights. They were all freshly made, from scratch, on site. The blue cheese dressing alone was amazing, large tasty chunks of cheese in a creamy sauce. You could taste the home made goodness!
