I've lived in the SouthCoast Mass region my whole life and somehow I've never been to Frates until this spring. Frates Drive-In is an adorable roadside food stand that offers loads of food options for such a small venue. Frates has delicious burgers, sandwiches and seafood options along with a ton of ice cream to finish off with. I had a Philly cheesesteak with a cake batter ice cream to finish and it was the perfect late lunch on a hot spring day. Parking is ample and the venue itself is very retro cute. Prices are a little steep for the area but the food is good enough quality to justify it. Just wish they gave complimentary fries/sides with their sandwiches like most burger joints do. My wife and I both ordered the clam cakes and chowder. Although there were plenty of clams in it there was no flavor of clams. It was tasteless. They don't serve traditional clam cakes. They serve a flat round cake that looks and tastes like a hockey puck. I was surprised at the quality of the meal as we have eaten a variety of other food there for many years and have not been disappointed satisfied. The service is always good there. As for ambience it's a drive in diner. I was surprised. I will continue to eat there but stick to things like fried clams burgers and hotdogs and fries. read more

Came here excited to try. Super busy on a Saturday night around 8:00p.m. We ordered scallop dinner, chicken tender dinner, and a strawberry cheesecake frappe. Total came to 42$... wayy tooo much for what we got. First, the frappe barely had flavor it was more of a MILK shake with a hint of strawberry. The scallop dinner plate had Barry a handful of fries and the scallops were the size of a nickel. Super tiny portion was super tiny for the amount you pay. They weren't terrible but definitely not worth the price. The chicken tender dinner was same.. Barely a handful of fries and 3 tenders for 12$. I've ordered twice from Frates, ones for fish and chips and once for fried scallops. Both had soggy fries, the coleslaw was awful, and the tartar sauce was mostly mayo. The milkshakes are good though. My wife likes their food and she gets the chili dog and ice cream. I don't recommend the seafood dinners..so far. Service is good, they are very nice. First time going here and I have to say its a great summer drive-in. Great selection of food and ice cream treats. Nice outdoor seating to enjoy your food. We had clam cakes and chowder. The chowder was good but average. The clam cakes are not what you'd expect. They are not shaped like a meatball but are flat. We were told about the shape when we ordered so we knew they would look different. They are Delicious! The service was fast and the staff pleasant and friendly. I can't say I've ever eaten any food at Frates so please take this review as a review of the ice cream and setting only. As I am new to the area, this was my first visit to Frates and it was charming in a way that walk-up New England ice cream shops are. There is an Elvis statue inside and fun music playing. The ice cream is well-priced and deeee-licious! I got an M&M Nor'easter which was great. The ice cream is very creamy and the amount of M&Ms was perfect. Others in my party got ice cream cones, sundaes, and a cup of ice cream. Not a single complaint and not a drop of ice cream left before we headed home. Since it is still chilly out there is a nice heated tent area with tables to sit and enjoy. As the weather warms I imagine sitting outside with that ice cream dripping will bring the nostalgia of long past summer days in New England come rushing back. I can't wait to return back to Frates again and again! (And next time take pics before we gobble our ice cream up! ) read more

Darn Frates!!! Something has changed for the worse!!! New management maybe?!?!!! I will not be back!!! Your soda machine is pouring Mountain Dew incorrectly and when I told one of the girls, they stated "oh well". It happened the time before and I did not say anything. Apparently, Frates doesn't care. The worst part is the lobster roll. I talked it up to everyone I know. Then I brought some people there and it was way less than advertised, because it completely changed. I paid $33/each for the giant lobster rolls, sometimes dropping over $300 in a trip. Not so long ago, you would get a perfectly lightly mayonnaise tossed lobster roll with all knuckle meat in the bun and 6 claws on top that you had to eat first (my favorite part). I noticed the last two times I went, we only received 4 claws on top and the mayonnaise is now ridiculous. Like a five year old did it. When I asked the child behind the counter why there were not 6 claws on top per usual, as I thought the first time was a fluke and just accepted it, he stated that it may be the weight of the bun. WTF FRATES!!! You are advertising 8 ounces of lobster meat, not 8 ounces of lobster meat and bun. Ridiculous! You will not see me again, nor will I talk highly of Frates or recommend Frates to anyone of my friends. read more

Overpriced sea food that does not taste fresh at all. Chicken bomb sandwhich had similar taste to the lobster like they were both cooked/boiled in the same pot. No flavor on the chicken and lobster tasted off. The picture and expectation for the burger is nowhere close to what you get, and I would rather take my chances on a fast food burger over a thin tasteless patty from frates. We tried this place because they allow you to bring your dog to the outside picnic table area. The food was not great, typical fried stuff, nothing special. My dinner plate did come come with cole slaw or tarter sauce because they ran out. Would have been nice if they mentioned that when I ordered. read more

Inside a quiet neighborhood in Taunton. Nice drive in with burgers and seafood. Had the scallop and clam box. It was pricey but good food if you're craving this like I was. The banana split was pretty big and good for 2 people. There were many places to sit outside. And the cows are good to take pics with and is pretty hilarious. read more

Brought my 87 year old grandmother for lunch. Parked close to a picnic table as she has trouble walking. A group of employees parked next to me and asked me to move to a different spot so another employee can park in my spot. Meanwhile there were MULTIPLE parking spots available. Nor was there an "employee parking only" sign.. The girl then asked me why I was giving her an attitude. This is the perfect place to stop for a bite when you're out for a spring or summertime drive. The atmosphere inside is utilitarian; order your food at the window and leave. Service is very friendly and quick enough. The menu boards can be a little overwhelming, but, well, there's a lot to choose from! The real charm is outside. On one side of the building, there are picnic tables under a covering or with umbrellas that provide a nice area to sit and relax. On the other side, I believe there is a small grassy area for kids to run around with more picnic tables (not as much shade). There are also cow, um statues that people can "pet" and take pics with. Pets are welcome on the property and they provide bags behind the building to pick up pet messes. Nice touch. As nice as the property is, the real magic is in the food. I've had the lobster roll, fried clam roll, hot dogs, fries, and ice cream, both regular and soft serve. Everything has been yummy and fresh. All the hot dog bun sandwiches have been on buttered toasted buns. Ice cream is served in generous portions and there are SO MANY FLAVORS! I really believe that this place has something for everyone. Chicken sandwiches, hamburgers, platters of seafood, milkshakes ...great variety! I really recommend getting off the highway or heading up/down on 138 and trying this place out. I stop in this seasonal place occasionally. It's basics for a drive-in restaurant. I've always thought a little over priced but like I say, it's seasonal so I understand they have to make their money when they can. Plus it's only a mile down the road so I pay for the convenience. But they lost me tonight. I stopped in for a hand packed quart of ice cream. It's Hershey's or some other wholesale brand but not bad. $8.50 so they don't give it away but I get it. Tonight I asked "can I get two flavors"? What I got was a pretty curse "only one". Really? 3 people already ordered and nobody after me. Can someone tell me why. A girl grabs a container, packs half way with a flavor and reaches 6 inches to the left or right. Is that unreasonable? YUM! This place just changed owners and re-opened. So freakin' good! What a nice little surprise in the middle of Taunton. We had fish and chips - one set with regular fries and one set with sweet potato. I'll tell you, I'm a die-hard Kelly's fish and chips fan and these were better... seriously, they weren't greasy at all. Lightly fried and there was more fish than batter (WOO HOO!) AND you don't feel like crap after! WOO HOO AGAIN! Also their tarter sauce was fantastic. Oh salted caramel chocolate covered pretzel ice cream. No brainer. Def worth checking out. read more

Where can I begin with Frates?! I absolutely LOVE this little hidden treasure. I've started coming here for the past 2 years and I seriously cannot get enough. I love everything I've ever gotten there. My usual would be the hotdogs with toasted buns, and a side of French fries. But I've finally divulged into their fish and chips and it was amazing! I love the haddock and it was such a good portion that I was full at the end but not over stuffed. My other favorites are the chicken sandwich, where I customize and have them add hot sauce on it. My drink of choice is always the root beer float, as I feel like I am about 7 years old again. The owner seems to really love his job and he knows his regulars by their orders no problem. And if there ever is a problem, the customer service is quiet amazing and it seems like it always gets resolved in a quick and pleasant manner. Now, my boyfriend and I go here multiple times a month, but we really love sitting outside, we love the music they play and I really forget that there is a city outside the restaurant area, so I find it relaxing. The overall outside area is always clean when I go, and there are plenty of tables on each side, so when it's nice, head over there to forget your troubles and eat your meal with no stress! Unfortunately they cannot get ice cream orders right. We asked for strawberry cheesecake ice cream we get a soft serve. The black raspberry chocolate chip that I got was freezer burned. The service is horrible and you can tell that the staff doesn't really care about servicing their customers. It was busy, however not worth $50. $24 for 8oz of fried clams. $23 for the lobster roll 4oz, and a few dollars for the ice cream cone. Not worth it in my opinion. Will not be returning. Owners need to change their operational strategy in order to speed up service and should lower their prices. read more

The food was perfectly acceptable. The wait time to order & receive food was fine. The pricing was a bit much, but I guess that's what you get with a mom & pop type place. It's convenient to be able to look at their Facebook page for current menu & pricing. The decor/music/ambience was about as expected. When we read that this was a 'drive-in,' I dunno, I guess we expected something a bit more like Sonic? Like, food brought to your car or at least a drive-thru? Guess not.
