I'm somewhat disappointed with this place, first I order Steak and shrimp for me my husband and my son,,, and when other people sat in Our table and the chef started cooking everything was good but when the time for serving came sooooo disappointing he exactly gave the other people from what I PAY for he gave them from my shrimp and my steak when the other ladies had only pay for chicken this was disrespectful to me he even gave those ladies more food than US... And at the end the ladies didn't even gave him tips but We did I understand that's he's job but still be fair with the customer please that's what he gets ‍ read more

Wow, where do I even begin? Everyone should DEFINITELY try this place. I know I'm coming back again. As far as food goes, you can definitely tell it's fresh! The sushi prices are a bit on the expensive side, but you really get what you pay for. I remember ordering a house special roll called the Crazy Friday since it was recommended; its presentation was just as delightful as its taste! I also tried the beef asparagus appetizer from the kitchen; it came out sizzling on a hot skillet! I love how they rolled the beef around the asparagus, almost like a sushi roll. And the sauce was yummy; I'd lick it all off the skillet if it wasn't hot! I also decided to treat myself with dessert. I've never heard of a Mochi, so I went with my gut and tried the strawberry flavour. Words cannot express how yummy it was; and quite a unique little treat. It's ice cream wrapped in a sort of pastry that just melts in your mouth! If you get the chance, have a chat with the owner/sushi chef. I think his name is Jerry; he is sooo nice, and you can tell he really cares about his customers' satisfaction. The service there was fun and friendly; hard workers, and the consistent uniforms give bonus to a pleasant atmosphere. I've been to other sushi restaurants like Sake Cafe etc, and sushi chefs are usually quiet, collected, and don't really seem interested in having a conversation with you. If you're having a bad day, Umi's sushi chefs will really turn your frown upside down! So friendly, funny and hospitable. Just ending my review with a side-note; I read all previous reviews and some of them are pretty harsh. Umi is still rather new, give them a break. If you were a newbie, wouldn't you want others to be easy on you, too? In fact, compared to the majority of restaurants in Chalmette, I can safely say that Umi is top notch. We love Umi. Food is consistently good. We dine here at least once a week. Very happy to have them in the Parish.

My only complaint is I've gone in a few times and the (young) staff are in the back goofing off instead of waiting on people. I wouldn't mind if they weren't so loud. Other than that, great food. I love the Umi roll and the dressing on the house salad! read more

Absolutely amazing restaurant. Remodeled a few weeks ago. Beautiful. Amazing food along with amazing presentation of food. No complaints with service. I've been living uptown for a very long time and just moved into the parish. So we thought to go check out our options. Umi was the worst sushi place we have ever eaten at. The sushi was not fresh at all! It gave off a almost rotten fish smell. Ruined our appetites! For a sushi lover and have tried almost every place in New Orleans I would never recommend this place to any one. It's overly priced and isn't worth me giving it another try. Perhaps one of the best sushi resturants in the area. For being a great seafood area, there is no good sushi resturants in town, The chefs were very friendly and made some great sashimi recommendations. The alboracore (sp) is a must. It is a perfect balance of the sweetness to the fish, saltiness of the ponzu sauce and just a small dab of hot sauce. The servers are more familiar with the hibachi menu more than the sushi, but looking at the crowd, that is the majority of their business. read more

My last time going here. I keep saying this and keep going back hoping it will get better but it doesn't. The calamari was frozen and so tough it was inedible. The miso soup was cold. The poke salad had a few pieces of fish, the rest tough squid and cucumber. My Paris roll was not fresh and quite fishy. The edamame was the only thing that was decent. For sushi in the parish this place in convenient and quality. I haven't dined in yet but my to go orders are always ready within a reasonable amount of time (even when the place is packed) and the hostess is always very helpful and kind. Their specialty rolls are good (not overtaken by rice like some places) and their hibachi rice is great. read more

Ive had better sushi/hibachi for cheaper price, better service and better atmosphere. This place seriously need an update, and posibly update the staff as well. I ordered crawfish roll with cream cheese and the only taste i can get from it was the seaweed and the creamcheese. Not to mention the serving plate it was served to me was dirty. My husband ordered the seafood udon, and that was just tragic. Could have atleast used real crab meat for it. I also ordered their hibachi rice which is just plain. Nothing from this place says dont judge the book by its cover. Its just teribble inside as it is outside. One of the worst eateries I've ever been to. Teriyaki chicken was clearly frozen Tyson patties that were warmed up, but still served to us ice cold. Sushi was decent at best. All the food was over-salted severely. Service was awful. The basketball game was much more important to the server than taking our orders. While the server was standing at our table, we had to both repeat our orders twice because he kept getting distracted by the tv. Terrible experience that will not be repeated. read more

Picked up lunch at Umi. It reminded me of the time in middle school when I threw a New Years Eve party in my parents unfinished basement. The theme was obvious, the hostess was nice but it's dark, dingy and if I invite people, they might not wanna stay for long. That said, I was optimistic that the atmosphere didn't speak for the quality of food. But I was wrong. My mushy house special had hardly any flavor. My co-workers agreed that it was "meh". This review has been changed from glowing to craPpy. I will NEVER give them another penny of my business. Since I don't drive I use a delivery service which cost $5 plus $5 tip. When my order came it was completely WRONG and I was told that they would make it up on my next order so I spent $17 for them to send the wrong food. When I called to re order the owner told me that he wasn't responsible for how I got the food, only for the cost of the food. He ( the owner)actually said " if you told me you spent $1000 on delivery, should I be responsible for $1000?" What an asshole. This is a delivery service that delivers a lot for them but did their job. So I'm just supposed to take a $10 loss on a dinner that was given to the delivery driver WRONG? It's not deliverys fault. So keep in mind when patronizing this establishment that if they give you the wrong food it's on you to take the loss. read more

Met my daughters here for lunch. I sat down at approximately 1130 my daughters had order sushi rolls, so I ordered hibachi chicken and rice. The restaurant had decent crowd but nothing over the ordinary. My daughters received their sushi and I was told my order should be coming out. As I watched my daughters finish their lunch and observed several other patrons that sat down after myself getting their meals. I inquired about my order. I was told "they cooked the teachers first because they only have 30 minutes". So I asked what if I only had 30 minutes. Finally 45 minutes later I received my order. Wait! Half my order, just the rice. I was told they are cooking the chicken now. My daughters had finished their lunch, so I told the waitress, please cancel my order cause I cannot wait any longer. A short time later, the waitress returned with my chicken but I declined to accept it. By this time I was just ready to go. The waitress returned with the bill, which I was still charged for half my order "the rice". The waitress did apologize and I did not fault her. You would think the owner or manager would have came over. In the end I paid my bill plus tipped the waitress. My daughters enjoy this place, but I will not be returning anytime soon. Helpful hint: tell them your a teacher and your order will be expedited. LOL read more

I went here tonight for the first time in a while and man was it a let down. It took at least 10 minutes for someone to take our drink orders (there were only 4 other tables and 2 waitresses). I ordered the baked mussels appetizer, after 30 minutes I asked my waitress if she knew where they were and she said they take about 15 minutes to cook. I ordered the snow crab salad when it came it was missing the smelt roe, when I asked the waitress she told me it doesn't come with smelt roe. I pointed out to her that the menu says it is snow crab, avocado and smelt roe. She rolled her eyes and told me I was wrong and she had never seen it made with smelt roe, she then walked over snatched up a menu and started walking towards me with it and stopped after she read it and went to the kitchen and brought me some smelt roe. She repeated she has NEVER seen it made like that. (so the chef and the waitstaff don't know their menu apparently). The snow crab was packed and hard and clumpy and it was like it was in a bin and someone used a ice cream scoop and just scooped out a bunch and plopped on the plate. After another 15 minutes the mussels showed up with our meal (so much for the appetizer) and they were WAY over cooked and tough, it was like chewing rubber. When the sushi came it came with NO wasabi or ginger. I'm pretty sure that is standard at every sushi restaurant. When we asked for some she rolled her eyes again and huffed and puffed. I don't think we were being unreasonable by asking our food to contain what it states on the menu or having wasabi with our sushi. Our drinks were never refilled once and it was horrible. I could see if they were busy but they was hardly anyone there and they had time to sit and chat so they could have refilled our drinks. I will gladly drive uptown or to Metarie next time I want sushi. read more

Came back several times to see if we paid. Then, she stood by the table and looked at us while we were getting the money ready. Ordered to-go here tonight, 3/10/13. - Never in my life have I had to WASTE* sushi unless I was full. Umi Sushi in Chalmette has definitely changed that for me. The tuna in my Metairie Roll was so dark it was nearly black (definitely NOT* fresh!), the crawfish in my Crawfish roll was disgusting (tasted nothing like crawfish and had an awful texture) ; the rice was wet and soggy & the roll fell apart before I could even eat it. I literally had to spit the food out because I was gagging. & to top it all off, my small portion of spicy mayo that cost me .50 cents was warm! DON"T* waste your money there, ever! $14 down the drain! I am so disgusted. read more

I was very interested in trying this place b/c the sushi restaurant I normally go to is a few extra minutes away and having just an hour lunch for work, these few extra minutes count. I had always passed Umi on my way to the other sushi restaurant so yesterday I decided to give Umi a try. I couldn't immediately find their menu online so I called them around lunch time. I asked if they could fax or email me a menu, but, thankfully, the lady that answered told me they have a website. I exclaimed "Ohh, perfect, thanks!" In looking at the menu online w/ 3 of my coworkers, the sushi chef's special had no descriptions so I called back. The same lady answered. I simply said "I want to place an order, but I have a question. What's in the black dragon roll?" She told me to hold on. No problem, I didn't mind holding. Wellllll, in the backround, as the phone was set down while she looked for the description, I heard her say "this aggravating phone call". I assume she was talking to a coworker and I will assume she was referring to me calling twice asking 2 simple little questions. As soon as she returned to the phone and still politely, yet fakely, told me what was in that roll, I told her "thank you" and hung up. That alone turned me/coworkers off and I/we will never give Umi our business. They lost the business of avid sushi lovers. Good luck to them! I wonder if this is the same waitress the comments are complaining about. I will continue driving those few extra minutes to the other sushi restaurant who know what customer service is about. Advice to this lady: Don't work in the service industry if the simple little questions I asked are "aggravating" as you said. (I'm sure life can't get much worse than that, lady!
