Wow! Where to start? My first visit, but surely not my last! The food was amazing and Dominique was great! We were served a warm bean salad (I can't remember the official name), a cucumber, tomato, onion salad and a beautiful loaf of fresh bread. We were full before our entrees came. Part 2 of 2 for letter U in alphabet series, U is for Umberto's. My girlfriend & I were down in Myrtle Beach with a group around Labor Day weekend. A friend gave us 2 concert tickets for Van Halen cover band at House of Blues here at Barefoot Landing on Sunday, September 1, 2024; perhaps he got free tickets for booking the timeshare stay. In general, we noticed a high amount of Italian restaurants in Myrtle Beach area, which had good reviews. Someone had recommended Umberto's, and we felt we wanted Italian at some time on this trip as that seemed to be popular here. Unfortunately, with the group we had Italian just 2 days later, which was an even stronger 5-stars than Umberto's. But Umberto's was still pretty awesome and a bit of a unique experience. Umberto's started in Pittsburgh in 1988 and opening up in Myrtle Beach. Instead of just the pasta & bread, which is standard for Italian food, you get a Beans & Greens. The beans were a solid I'm guessing a Cannelli bean like a kidney beans, but I'm not an expert. The salad wasn't a traditional salad either. Normally, a salad is always lettuce and generally tomato, carrots, dressing, and/or various other combinations. This salad was no lettuce! It was cucumber, tomatoes, & onions plus dressing. I ate around onions as I don't like. This was a very good take on salad. Bread was delicious too. Although the uniqueness of the appetizers was great, the real highlight was the main event of my entree Chicken Parmigiana. This was outstanding, amongst the best I've had. Server was friendly answering all our questions. Ambiance is comfortable with plenty of room inside with windows facing boardwalk along Barefoot Landing. We were a group of seven women staying in NMB and were told by numerous friends not to miss Umberto's. Of the seven, five of us are Boston Italian-Americans, so show us what you got, Pittsburgh! The dining room was packed with mostly large groups of golfers and the like. Our server, Ivan, was spectacular! He left no detail undone and was great about explaining the Umberto way. His most commonly uttered phrase was , "I got you!" For example, we had no idea there'd be a pasta e fagioli & bread course, followed by salad, followed by pasta marinara prior to our selected entrees. The beans were possibly my favorite part of the meal--garlicky and delicious. The tomato-cucumber-red onion salad was another favorite, and the dressing was to-die-for, sopped up with the fresh, warm bread. Not a fan of chunky tomato sauce on angel hair , but the flavor was good. I prefer a more homogeneous red sauce that sticks to pasta. Entrees included various eggplant & veal, grouper, and veal Umberto. I loved the eggplant preparation (breaded and thin) but others preferred their homemade versions with more layered cheese. Typical Italians! We had no room for dessert. Several of us were disappointed to hear they'd run out of cappuccino. Not sure how that happens in an Italian restaurant. Also, Boston wants to see spumoni on the dessert menu! A great dining experience was enjoyed overall. If you find yourself near Barefoot Landing, pay them a visit. Ciao! read more

I've been wanting to come here for years but I was sadly disappointed. Our server was cold and was rushing us. The food was ok at best. I did enjoy the bread and beans but the meals just lacked flavor and the sauce was not my favorite at all. I was also thrown by the plastic chairs with the menu prices. read more

My husband and I went here for dinner on a recommendation from someone I met by the pool at our hotel. My husband had a Center cut pork chop. Well let me tell you when that thing came out...All I could say is wow huge portion two big thick cut pork chops. He said they were delicious. Interesting enough. The warm-up that comes with the meal was very different and very tasty. It was a bean dish that comes out family style and also bread. It was a bean dish that comes out family style and also bread and tomatoes, cucumbers, and onions with an Italian dressing. Angel hair pasta with a tomato based marinara was very tasty also included. I had eggplant parmigiana 4 thin cutlets with sauce and provolone cheese very good. To top it off I wanted cannoli because I love cannoli and it's rare place that I go that I can get it. Add a glass of wine and the entire meal for two people was $83. I paid more for our lunch the other day that was half as good. I would definitely return. The service was wonderful very attentive our waiter (I believe his name is Ivan) was great. We are now sitting in Barefoot landing on Adirondack chairs stuffed. Top notch Italian! The delicious starters and soft, heavenly bread set the tone for a great meal. The drinks were strong and good (finally, feels like it's a rarity around here). During my first visit, the T-bone was delicious but a bit difficult to work with. Update: Returned two years later, and it's still as good as ever. This place is a family favorite, so whenever we're in town, we hit up Umberto's. The Artichoke Francaise was a hit at the table, and the lobster ravioli was excellent. The Zuppa de Mare wasn't for me, but everyone else enjoys it immensely. Steak, pasta, seafood: it's all done well but not "well-done." We stopped by Umberto's this past Sunday around 6:15 PM. The sign on the door clearly says "walk-ins welcome," and we would've been totally fine waiting--especially on a busy night. What ruined it wasn't the wait. It was the host. A man with glasses greeted us with such an appalling attitude that I stepped back and let my husband handle it. He came back out just as disgusted--not only by how we were treated, but how the people in front of us were spoken to. There were plenty of open tables. There was no chaos, no crowd issue. Just a host who clearly has no business being the first face of any restaurant. Although we're not locals, we visit Myrtle Beach often--and we will not be back here. Our family dined here last night and I immediately needed to leave a review. The in-laws are locals and wanted to take me here because of the pork chops. Wow! It did not disappoint. Let's start: * Hostess was kind. We were running a few minutes behind so we called to let them know. She said they will hold the table for 20 minutes. Luckily, we were only 5-6 minutes late. Once we arrived we were seated in less than 2 minutes! * Service: Chad took care of us and was very accommodating. He got us drinks and whatever else we needed in a timely manner. Plus his suggestions were on point! * Food: the beans were excellent as was the tomato cucumber salad! Angelhair pasta had a delicious red sauce. We're Italian and know what delicious sauce is. This did not disappoint. My wife and I split the ny strip and pork chop for 2. I could barely eat one pork chop! It was excellent!! To think they charge 30 dollars for two - it's a huge portion. Went for dinner at Umberto's tonight and had a wonderful time sitting at the bar and being served by Jimmy the bartender. First off, it is not your normal Italian dinner. Once you order, you will first be served pasta fagioli (pasta with beans) plus bread. Next comes tomato/onion/cucumber salad. Then comes angel hair pasta with a very thick tomato sauce which I wasn't a fan of. Luckily the bartender had prepped us. Our meals came out after the pasta and both our meals were delicious. I had a wonderful Steak Scampi with shrimp & my wife had an amazing Chicken Piccata. If it was up to her, it was 5 star meal but for me I'll rate it 4 stars. I feel bad these days giving negative reviews because people Rely on the income, and this location the rent must be sky high, but honestly this place is awful. This was the only place that we called that would take a same day reservation. When we walked in the first thing that i noticed was the aroma. And not in a good way. In fact I immediately said to my sister "well that doesn't smell good." It's Saturday night at prime dinner time in tourist season and the restaurant is 2/3rds empty. Also, Not a good sign. Collectively we ordered fried calamari app (was ok) and it came out with our bread, some weird pasta and beans thing and tomato and cucumber and onions bathed in Italian dressing. The bread was good, so I'm going to venture a guess and say they buy it not make it. The sauce was very chunky, and heavy on basil. It actually looked like sauce from a jar. The tomatoes in the salad were good but it was literally a bath of Italian dressing. The main course was as follows, chicken parm (bland), rigatoni aka vodka, at first bite was ok, then the aftertaste hit. Eggplant parm (eat at your own risk), chicken Francese where the flour coating just slid right off the chicken. That's kinda the best part about francese. The coating on the chicken. There was none. It was in the bottom of the bowl which was also an oily mess. Finally was the lowlight the veal Marsala. I've never seen Marsala sauce that was weird rust colored, thin and oily. 3 bites, done. Was inedible. The family style angel hair had that same lumpy tomato sauce that came with the calamari which was just laddled on top so that the pasta under it had no sauce sticking to it, it was just plain pasta and the way it was heaped into the bowl you couldn't even mix it. Went here on Sunday September 22nd 2024 with my family, and a few family friends, as part of our south carolina vacation. Located in Barefoot Landing, in the front where one doesn't have to walk far to enter it. It has an hearty italian home vibe. We met the rest of our family there, and they were already at the table with menus. When we arrived, we were given more menus to look at. Lots of seafood, and non seafood options. First, we all got drinks: i got a tito's with sprite, my dad and mom got one as well. We also got a beer, and some wine. We were 6 people in total. Waiter who served us was very nice, and definetely patient with us. We started with drinks and an appetizer of the fried provogne, and fried Calamari. We also ordered our entrees, which came with pasta fagaigi (pasta with beans), and a tomato cucumber onion salad, and bread as well. the bread was pretty good too. Also liked the beans, and surprisingly liked the fried provogne as well as the calamari. Didn't care for the tomato cucumber onion salad, but the others at the table did. For entree, I ordered the Zuppa de Mare, which is pasta with seafood of shrimp, clams, mussels. We had 3 of those with our order. We also ordered the veal eggplant parm, and a steak. Most of us enjoyed our food, and took home lots of boxes and leftovers. I thought the pasta tasted a bit different, and didn't like it as much, but ate all my fish. My golf trip buddies love this place. This time we had the Italian Feast which was excellent. There were about 10 different items including the bread with garlic, olive oil and Parmesan, cucumber and tomato salad, calamari, fried cheese and stuffed peppers. This was followed by Angel Hair Pasta, sausage and Italian sausage, a pork chop that was delicious and the size of meat that ripped over Fred Flintstones car and finally chicken cacciatore. Four people must participate in this feast for $40 a head. Great, attentive service rounded out the experience because we were too stuffed for dessert! read more

The service was very good. We had multiple people attending to us, ensuring prompt service. All were very friendly and personable. This is a classic old style Italian restaurant, in that they feed you actual food before they even take your order. We started with a bowl of Italian beans with a little macaroni, not too bad. Then a basket of bread with salted butter. It reminded me of moderately crusty bread that I would have eaten on a sandwich at Primanti Brother's. I enjoyed the tomato, cucumber, and onion salad in a zesty Italian dressing with a lot of red wine vinegar and herbs. After that came the bowl of angel hair pasta in their sauce. We were a little disappointed with the taste of the sweeter marinara. It may have been from using carrot, in the mirepoix, or it may have been too much sugar. But it wasn't great sauce, I especially didn't like having that watery excess in the bottom of the bowl. For entrees, we did an order of chicken eggplant parmesan, I really like having a combination of both and they obliged. I got two eggplant slices and one chicken breast topped with provolone and marinara. Chicken breast was a good size, cooked well, eggplant was fine, still crispy, not that greasy. The other entree was the Chicken Antonio with prosciutto, provolone, mushrooms and a lemon butter sauce. The dish was cooked well, but the overall product turned out dry without the lemon butter sauce. Sadly we did not order the Bravo Franco, the meat extravaganza I described in a previous post, with a strip steak, two pork chops, and sauteed peppers, onions, and mushrooms. Mom wasn't feeling it and I wasn't about to push her in that direction. Of course, two tables away, I saw one guy digging into a couple of pork chops that must have been 2 inches thick. I began feeling the regrets. Is this the best Italian food I've ever had? It's not. But they gave us good service at a fair price and that does go a long way. Would I come back? Tourist trap, the food is par at best! I don't think I've ever been in an Italian restaurant that didn't have pizza! The bread was straight out of a plastic bag, they didn't have salad but they did have tomato, cucumber, and onion salad. The tomatoes were very tasty and the onions were fine but the cucumber had a funky aftertaste. The chicken parm was avg. at best. Service was fine. It was pretty loud, but that didn't matter specially if the food is good. To be fair I'm sure most places there are tourist traps. read more

Umberto's is a family tradition when vacationing in NMB. There is usually so much food you really have to pace yourself. You start with any appetizers -- the calamari are highly recommended. Then the amazing bread. Get the roasted garlic to go with this. Then the "beans and greens". Then the tomato and cucumber salad. THEN the Angel hair pasta. All before your entree comes. Upon entering Umberto's about twenty minutes before our reservation, we were swiftly seated, a high chair having already been placed at our table for the infant in tow. Our waitress was a bubbly twenty something young lady who was polite and attentive beyond hope, our water glasses didn't have a chance to be empty with her on duty! The service gets a resounding five stars! I would give a higher mark if it were possible. Now the food... let this Yelper give you a solid piece of advice my friend, come hungry and with a loose pair of pants! The food pours out like water and is delicious beyond words. Our first course was a delectable 'beans and greens' white beans stewed with Swiss chard and tomatoes in a delectable garlic based broth, served alongside it was a heaping basket of warm bread with fresh butter. The beans and bread made me want to commit to a scene reminiscent of the one in "They call me Trinity" but I had to control myself, as there was much more yet to come. Our next course, ordered, was a bowl of fried calamari with a hearty chunky tomato sauce. My friend I have eaten in Italian restaurants all over the states of New York and New Jersey and this calamari was honestly finer than any I have eaten before! Crisp and tender, thick chunks of delicious squid! This was followed by a salad of robust, meaty tomato wedges, crunchy red onion and cool sweet cucumber in a refreshing vinaigrette, it refreshed the palate and invigorated the appetite. Now we come to the pasta course, angel hair pasta served under a glorious scoop of the aforementioned tomato sauce, the sauce is vibrant and full of exciting flavors, a small kick of spice on the back of the tongue leaving you wanting more and more! Finally my friend, we come to my main course, the Chicken Antonio... what could I say to describe it? Exquisite... the chicken is juicy and tender, cooked not a moment too long, the prosciutto provolone stuffing wasn't tacky or a gimmick. Several slices of prosciutto and a thick meaty layer of cheese enticed the senses, the delicate white wine sauce a fragrant blanket, mushrooms tender and earthy rounding out the richness of the dish. If I were forced my friend, at gunpoint mind you, to make a single complaint about my experience at Umberto's... the potatoes in my chicken Antonio were undercooked on the inside.... But I just cut around it and ate the outside, which was delicious! The insides were a small matter hardly missed, as my stomach was and currently is as I write this review, full to bursting! In final, the ambiance is your classic Italian restuarant, a modern aesthetic, intimate, a bit tight in some places. But with a place this popular that is to be expected! I'll give the ambiance a 4 star review but at the end of the day, the food and the service outshine it by strides, Umberto's gets this New Yorker's two thumbs up of unabashed approval, I lament the fact I am leaving tomorrow for home, but the staff at Umberto's had better expect me again in a year's time... hungry for more! read more

Tonight my family and I went to dine at this establishment for my sisters 21st birthday. Not one time did myself or family feel welcomed. When i addressed the issue with the owner he acted as if it was normal behavior. But we All watched how she interacted with her other tables, and it was as if she was annoyed by our table. But the thing that got me the most was the fact that the server felt that it was okay to argue back with the customer. And in any restaurant business you don't do that whatsoever. The food was definitely not good at all and for them to call themselves an "UPSCALE" restaurant, there was ABSOLUTELY nothing upscale about it. I've had better service at other restaurants and the food is 10 times better. I will NEVER return to this establishment and i will not tell any of my friends and family to eat here. read more

Being and Italian from Boston and a very picky and hard to please Italian food person, I was totally taken back at the quality of food at Umbertos. We had a boneless stuffed chicken dish and Seafood over pasta in a white wine sauce. The server also brought out a side of pasta in red sauce and a fresh tomato and cucumber salad. My server Ivan had a great personality and couldn't have been any nicer. A must visit eatery in Myrtle Beach. Make reservations, very busy and I can see why. read more
