Checked out this new place in Prenzlauer Berg last Friday night and it was heaving. Another Vietnamese-fusiony type place but hey the boy was paying, so I wasn't about to argue! :P They have made a lot of effort with the decor and ambience, transporting you to 1950s Vietnam, I would say, with old Vietnamese records playing in the background. The food was good, but not great. Service was ok too given how busy it was, our food arrived fairly quickly. We had the standard Vietnamese spring rolls, followed by the duck with sweet potato fries and the calamari dish. The duck was beautifully cooked, just pink in the middle. But the fries were not crispy at all and were a bit flaccid and flavourless. The coriander pesto was a lovely burst of flavour but I found the sauce for the vegetables very boring (essentially watered down Hoi Sin). The calamari again, cooked just right, not overcooked and chewy, but with a perfect bite to it. Again the sauce let it down. Portion sizes were great, lots of veggies and reasonably priced. I would actually give this place 3.5 stars. Worth trying out once but not entirely convinced I'll go back there especially when there are so many places to try out in Berlin! read more

I was visiting Berlin for a few days and out of all the restaurants I visited during my trip this was my favorite! It is Chinese Indonesian cuisine. The restaurant is in a very trendy and almost hipster neighborhood of Berlin. There's outdoor seating as well. My friend and I sat outside. They have a pretty extensive menu, and I feel like you can find something that meets your taste. I ordered the duck filet in this yellow curry sauce over a bed of jasmine rice. It came in a wooden bowl and they offered a knife and fork (plus for beginner chopstick people like me). The duck was A-mazing! It was cooked very well and the sauce made it even better. As for the interior of the restaurant, it seemed very open with lots of seating but most people sat outdoors. The staff was very attentive and even helped us get rid of this random bee that kept annoying us and other customers. I would definitely go back again. read more

We were really excited when Umami opened, especially as it is right next door to our home. After being there on about 5 different occasions, the quality and service has really declined (though it is ALWAYS packed and seems the hotspot at the moment). Yesterday, sitting inside (which was only half full), we had to wait forever for attention as all the friendly worker bees swarmed around as if we weren't even there. We accept that Umami is not SO inexpensive, but my meal was over 10 Euros left me quite hungry afterwards (the portion of sweet potato fries was just ridiculous). And sorry, but the music they play is consistently super annoying (almost as much as the street musicians in this area). I know Prenz Berg is super excited about Umami, we were at first, but no plans to go there again anytime soon... :-( read more

We were on a double date. We shared 2 family menu dishes which was a very nice assortment of dishes. Perfect, if like us, you're just not sure what to get. Everything tasted great. The macha tea was brilliant and we also got a complimentary dessert which was very thoughtful. Def coming again. read more

uff, umami is good. like really good. im just going to leave it at 4 stars say its 4.5 stars. i came in here late around 10pm and wasnt so hungry so i couldnt splurge like i normally do. i had the pagoda pho which is their vegetarian pho. it was so good. this review is still pending. need to come back here and try more things, but its right on the border of being a 5 star spot for me. read more

We came to this place with a babycarriagw and the staff were really helpful and helped us in immidiatly. This place has chair with no back but we could sit on the part where u can sit on pillows on the floor and you can rest your back to the wall. A bit draghty but nice and cozy. We ordered the scallop for starter ( dont remember the name from the menu) it was great! But in order for it to be perfect i would have liked something crunchy in it. For maincourse we had the Phõ with beef which was THE BEST I ever had and probably will ever have!! So delicious and perfect in every way!!! We also hade the hamburgee (the one with meat). The fried sweetpatotes were good. But with a sweet dressing and sweet mango in the burger it kind of tasted more like a sweet dish than main course. And also the meat was very dry and compact. Let hope they make a makeover of the burger in the future. The service was flawless!! read more

Food is really nice, but a bit expensive. Service is not so good. I have to remind the waitress I didn't get my soup. When we paid, because the service is not okay, I gave the waiter €12 for my €11.8 meal. The waiter kept telling me in Germany we usually give 10% tips. WTF is that? Your service is not good and you even asked for tips? So I replied, €12 for my meal. And the waiter is not happy, return me €0.20 to show his dissatisfaction. The worst experience to go to the restaurant in Berlin so far. I won't go there again even the food is nice. read more

Tried out Umami after a friend'a recommendation. Arrived on Saturday afternoon around 5pm. Beautifully styled, lovely location, excellent staff and carefully, thoughtful and well put together menu. Not mind blowing but the overall experience was excellent. Highly recommended. read more

The food was really nice but worst service I ever experienced, won't go back again for sure, they don't respect their customers & are really rude. Server asks for more tips even when he knows he did a really bad service, we waited 1 hour after ordering & the server camed back to us saying he has lost our order (what the fuck! we waited another 30min). We shouldn't be forced to give tips to a really rude/bad server. So bad the service is really bad because the food/location is nice. read more

After a delicious evening in Umami X-berg, my boyfriend and me decided to try out the restaurant in Prenzlauer berg as well. Unfortunately I must say the experience was not as goof on all fronts. The starters (spring rolls, dumplings) were really delicious, and my boyfriend was very happy with his main. I, however, found my main dish very boring. Also, it was really crowded. This is okay and actually brings life to the place, however, we had to ask for our drinks 2 times, and only received them when we were almost finished with our mains and did not receive a 'sorry' either. The non-alcohol cocktails were delicious though! Also, the prices are ridiculously cheap, so I will come back to give it another chance, choose another main course, and hopefully receive our drinks before the food. read more

The place seems to be packed every I pass by there. They have plenty of non-meat options such as seafood and vegetarian dishes. The vegetarian pho was one of the better ones I've tried. If I'm stayin in Berlin longer, I'd definitely come here again. The only issue is that the place is crowded and there's no place to put your stuffs if you have a bag or coat...etc. read more

Wow! Never expected to find such amazing vietnamese in Berlin. We travel to Berlin regularly and have enjoyed all our meals but this was the best. I dont recall the name of the platter we shared but it had everything. Delicious spring rolls, chicken skewers, a curry, rice, several dipping sauces, shrimp. Umami is by far my favourite Asian restaurant in the area. I love most of the dishes which are delicious and super cheap. My favourite dish by far is the Golden beef. I also reccomend you try one of the non-alcoholic cocktails (especially the one with ginger and basilicum). Aaaaa and I forgot to mention that the place has a great vibe. From the looks it really seemrd to be a nice place to eat and the terrass was quit ful so it is a popular place. But service really awful. It almost never happened before , but we left before we got anything to eat en went to the much nicer place a fee metres further down the road: miss Hue. Which is small, but with very nice service and has good food for a low price. read more

We had high expectations due to all the good reviews. Unfortunately they were everything but met. What dragged this place down to only one star was mainly the out-of-this-world-rude service. The waiter was the worst! He grunted back to us when we spoke to him to start with. I'm not a huge fan of coriander and yes, I know, most asian food has some amount of this but still, I usually never have a problem when I kindly ask to have my food without. So I did that here too. The waiter grunted back something that I understood as "no problem we make it without". The food arrives, with coriander. So I get his attention and tell him that the dish is with coriander even though I asked for it to be without. He starts arguing that we can remove it but come on, it's all over the dish. It can't be removed. After some arguing he takes the dish away. Shortly after another waiter comes back with the same dish and says "without coriander". I start eating and there is still coriander in there. At this point I'm not in the mood for arguing anymore. I just give in and stick to my beer instead. For the quality of the food I can just add that I ordered the option with chicken file. It arrives with something else deep fried but it's definitely not a file. It's bad. We speak both English and German but not Vietnamese. But in this case I doubt that it would have made a difference. This place sucks!!! read more

Food is absolutely brilliant, but due to the awful service we're not inclined to go back: At first they forgot our booking, while waiting in line for a table they forgot us and asked a second time whether we had reserved. Worst, however, was that upon payment, the waitress didn't give our change back, but stood there waiting for us to tell her how much tip we wanted to give. She even asked us - in English as she thought we were tourists probably - "TIP?!" That's about the rudest thing that ever happened to us at a restaurant. read more

Love to go here with friends! food is really good, I've already tried the whole menu and it's always well cooked and tasty. Staff is friendly and fast, also the owner is friendly. The atmosphere is nice. But since it is always crowded even weekdays you have to make a reservation if you are more than two people. If you ok with sharing your super tiny table then you don't have to. Only minus are the super tiny tables. Food tastes fresh and healthy. read more

Fusion food at its best in a relaxed buzzing atmosphere (which I like). We went there with a group of eight and food was served blazing fast. The set menus are a good choice if you don't want to fuzz around with lots of people and the cocktails are a nice addition to spicy dishes. The main dishes we selected were very good . I had the vegetarian Pho, my dining companions had Pho with beef, the others had dishes with mango, rice and beef which I can't recall the name. The drinks were nice but not spectacular. Generally we were happy with the meals, they were tasty- but we will never return ..... the reason was the high pressure from the waitstaff to hurry to place the drink order [ the cocktail list was interesting and I wanted to review that but ended up with just ordering wine because they kept rushing me by asking if we were ready] Once we ordered the drinks, the pressure continued for us to order our meals. This is highly uncommon in Berlin. I live here for months at a time and I can't think of any other places which have such a disregard for the diners. The curt service, the unfriendly attitude and the rush to order causes me to drop the rating by two stars. We went on a Monday night - it was busy but there were tables open. This attitude about turning tables is not appreciated. Think twice if you are looking for a relaxing meal. I can't give this place more stars because I left unhappy and irritated. read more

The food is decent but the service is a disaster. The waitress served me a warm beer and refused to take it back. We asked them to put the homemade birthday cake for our 6-year old daughter in the fridge, then when it was time to serve it we found that someone had eaten half of our cake! Then they said they'd offer us a free round of drinks to compensate an brought us some disgusting pudding we didn't order. Then when we went to pay they said we had to pay for the drinks, the pudding was our compensation. I probably had highly expectations going in and I have to say I found it underwhelming at every turn .Lets start with reservations.The don't take reservations for for 2 or 1 so you have to pop by and hope they will find somewhere for you.On prime evenings, you're probably better off going elsewhere if you don't have hours to huddle around at an overly crowded bar waiting for a table.I do like restaurants with floor dining but the execution here is awful.There is literally no space to sit comfortably enough to eat.The tiny baby tables are ok ...if you are 4 feet tall!I'm not particularly sure how you are supposed to enjoy a meal with cramping muscles,an aching bum and a smelly feet or socks just next to your plate.Lets get to the food...The menu sounds exciting but that's as far as the excitement will go.Just on paper.The idea of serving stir fried wok dishes Luke-warm befuddles me.Most of the meals are overly sweetened and the flavor profile revolves around sweet and sour with no depth.The portions rather small for what you are paying and certainty not justifiable.Lastly and probably most catastrophic,they will shuffle you out as soon as you're done eating to try and create room for the next round of guests.This is one of those restaurants that may sound lovely and cool..the reality couldn't be further!If you are looking for a dining experience and a nice evening out,this isn't it. read more

My colleagues liked the food very much, only I was a little bit disappointed with my vegetarian option (too much pure rice). The prices were definitely ok! The service was very impolite from the beginning and made us feel unwanted. After telling us that our reservation would be limited, the person who served us never made any eye contact and seemed very impatient with us and our simple orders. We finished our dinner and switched to another place. I give three points because maybe the person had just a very bad day. Other waitresses and waiter seemed to be nicer but very rushed. read more

This family run restaurant that has been in Berlin for decades is amazing. Happy staff, always smiling and willing to explain menus and food choices. The food is quite simply delicious, fresh and an adventure. Try the Lemongrass and ginger lemonade - nothing quite like it - divine. First of all sorry for my English. - 45 minutes to wait instead i had booked a table - Nobody was "in charge" of the reservations - A crowd of people at the entrance of the restaurant, no space to wait. So crowded that a girl had her hair being burned by a light on the bar. - Nothing done to apologize for the wait - the Customer isn't respected. They just want to make money on the customer. - Didn't want to serve us tap water unless we were taking another drink (drink that are really expensive for a city like Berlin: around 7 euros) - Dishes hadn't any taste so it was really disappointing. - when paying, we didn't want to give Tipps because of the terrible evening that we had. The waiter was insisting. I told him that we really didn't like our meal and the mood of the restaurant and that we will not come again. He reply by : "We don't need people like you!". Later on, he threw me the change on the table being really disrespectful. - I wanted to complain but there was no manager or somebody in charge that night... So only one advice, don't go there if you want to be threated with some consideration. It's quite costly for Berlin and it's not worthing it at all. - 45 d'attente pour avoir une table malgré réservation - personne à qui s'adresser pour les réservations - énormément de monde amassé à l'entrée du restaurant. Aucun espace pour attendre d'être placé. Tellement de monde qu'une fille s'est trop approchée d'une bougie qui était sur le bar et ses cheveux ont pris feu. - rien a été fait pour s'excuser de l'attente occasionnée - pas d'égard envers le client. Ce restaurant est juste une machine à faire de l'argent. - refus de servir de l'eau du robinet si on ne prenait pas au préalable une boisson de la carte (boissons qui sont assez chères pour Berlin : environ 7 euros). - les plats n'avaient aucunes saveurs. Très décevant. - au moment de payer, nous n'avons pas voulu laisser de pourboire à cause de la mauvaise soirée que nous avons passée. Le serveur a insisté pour le pourboire. Je lui ai dit que nous n'avions pas apprécié notre repas et l'atmosphère du restaurant et que nous ne reviendrions pas. Il m'a répondu : "Nous n'avons pas besoin de gens comme vous!" et dans la minute qui a suivi, il a jeté violemment le change qu'il me devait sur la table. Nous étions tous choqués. - j'ai voulu me plaindre auprès d'un responsable mais personne n'était présent pour écouter ce que j'avais à dire. Un seul conseil, n'allez pas dans ce restaurant si vous voulez être traité avec un minimum de considération. C'est coûteux pour Berlin et ça n'en vaut vraiment pas la peine. read more
