I don't eat sashimi or salmon... or many fish in general, but I have been craving for shrimp tempura roll. It was so good! Portion size was pretty good, but next time I would omit the sweet sauce. I also got their California Crunch Roll which was okay... not what I expected as I'm not a fan of cream cheese in my sushi and again, it was drizzled with that sweet teriyaki sauce. It's kind of hard to rate this place. Some of my higher rating is based on the fact that I'm surprised that you can get sushi like this almost near Graham. On the other hand, it doesn't beat out some of my fave sushi places. We ordered the lion king, avocado bomb, and the house special. I don't really care for salmon, but we had to compare this to the Salmon Lovers @ Two Koi. Doesn't compare, but the flavors are clean. The salmon is nicely charred, and there was a nice light green (some type of wasabi sauce) sauce on the side that was quite tasty. It was lacking something... The avocado bomb, is accurately named, because, yeah, it's da bomb! I only wish it had a little more filling-to-avocado ratio. I like the spicy tuna that sits on top, but I want more. More, I say!! The house special was quite special. Usually when I see teriyaki-type sauces on sushi, I cringe. So, I cringed, but it was not justified. As my friend pointed out, it was probably some type of ponzu sauce. Lots of flavors, creaminess, good tuna, yeah, buddy!! We experimented with some of the sauces on the table, because we like heat. She put a little sirachi sauce on the plate...well played friend. Well played. Just what it needed! The establishment is clean, and cute. The owners and wait staff are friendly. They seemed familiar with the people coming in, i.e., knew what they usually ordered, where they worked, etc. They were also super-accommodating to my sons. Each and EVERY time we have come in, it had been a delightful experience! The have EVERYTHING you can imagine! I am a fan of sushi and they have a plethora to choose from! Bentonville boxes, family meals, appetizers, side orders and so much more. The young lady who works there (possibly the owner) has a great deal of customer service skills! Always takes time to chat and comes back enough to make sure we are always taken care of but not enough to be bothersome! I appreciate a good meal and a great experience. 4 out of five...only because the drink options are limited...and the bench seats need more cushion! Got there as soon as they open. Ordered the avocado bomb, so delicious! Also ordered the sweet-and-sour chicken. Looks and tastes more like general chicken, which tasted fishy probably due to using old oil yuck!!! If I did go back Id definitely just stick to the sushi. read more

Wow! I don't know about most people but after Sushi or Bento sometimes I am left wanting more... My husband and I stopped here on our way back to Spokane we stopped at Noon we were full till 6pm! This has been out local favorite asian cuisine since we moved to the area three years ago. We have ordered several times through the pandemic and to go. This was our first time dining in and I'm sorry to say it will be the last. We also rarely go out to eat as a family so we ordered the family special. We asked to switch our a couple of the entrees as we are not meat eaters and to have the fried rice made without egg due to our son having a diagnosed egg allergy. They were initially not pleased to accommodate us with the changes but agreed and ultimately forgot to enter the order in correctly for the rice without egg. When the Owner became aware of the error she was only concerned if my son had already eaten the rice with egg accidentally and when I said no because I had noticed it she was fine with leaving it at that. When I asked if she would give a discount or make a new small order if rice without egg she fussed that she would need to see. She returned and agreed but even with it being their error she was reluctant and made sure we knew a lie that the platter s were supposedly pre made and in the future they would not make exceptions or accommodations. All of this was relayed to us as a family and in front of my 7 year old son who had allergies. WOW! Goodbye Umai. Putting profit over safety and customer satisfaction with result in loss of business and likely future closure. read more

I have been looking forever for good Sushi in Pierce County. Well, here it is! Umai is the best sushi I've had since I last went out to the east coast. As a vegetarian, it's also very enlightening to see such amazing vegetarian options for both sushi and other main dishes. But, let's start from the beginning. As soon as I walked in the door, I was warmly greeted by the waitress and sushi chef. The staff always have a good attitude and positive energy. And, they take their job seriously. I'm usually skeptical of the one stop sushi / teriyaki destinations littering the Seattle - Tacoma area, but working just down the block, I had to try it out. Otherwise I might have missed out on this amazing find. The sushi here is divine. My non-vegetarian friends were impressed by the freshness of the fish, and the quality of the meals. I was impressed by the to-die for Tamago (a sweet egg nigiri sushi). The vegetarian rolls all have the perfect combinations of veggies and are peppered with sesame to bring out the flavor of the vegetables and rice. But, sushi is not for all, and Umai does not disappoint. I was particularly impressed by the Teriyaki Tofu. Battered with tempura and in a sweet and tangy Teriyaki sauce, this was a fabulous dish for those not interested in Sushi. Umai is a rare find for this region, and at very reasonable prices. I give this restaurant my highest recommendation. I just pray that I can resist the temptation of such good food within walking distance of where I work. If it weren't for a budget, I'd probably eat there 5 days a week! read more

Very fresh and good. Has been consistently good for months, the yak isobar is the absolute best I've had, not swimming in sauce and fresh vegetables. Egg rolls are amazing. Only issue is I wish their vegetable tempura had more variety, it is mostly just potatoes. Overall a great place. read more

This is sorta like a hidden gem. If you drive by, you'd totally miss it. My husband and I were craving for some Japanese food nearby, which led us to Umai Bento. Not expecting to be delighted, since location-wise, this is not the spot to find great Japanese food. But, I have to say, Umai Bento is pretty lit. We Went tonight because the waitlists for other places in town were an hour or more. We got seated and then didn't have drinks or anything until 25 minutes plus of waiting. Our food had a hair in it and we also waited 45 minutes to eat a meal that wasn't all that great. The only reason it's getting two stars is because they had cold coke in the fridge. read more

Thomas and I LOVE this place, and have come time and time again. They have made, hands down, the best rainbow roll I've ever had. The sushi is always well made and plump and have about five - seven cuts each. I'm a big fan of their bento boxes, which are very cheap and immensely filling. While they are very pretty, but don't look like much coming out it really does satiate your hunger. The customer service here is always spot on as they aren't constantly by your side, but they definitely refill drinks and tea in a timely manner. Also their green tea ice cream is awesome. read more

Not only was the sushi wonderful, but the plate was beautiful as well. The waitress was very attentive even though I ate alone and she had multiple families in the dining area. I ordered the Umai roll which was fried, not to dark, but crunchy enough to add a great texture. They jam pack their rolls and they are bursting with flavor!!! The owner was present during my experience and states that all of their sauces or made from scratch! Let me tell you, you can surely taste the difference. Fresh and unique. The seaweed salad was tasty with the right amount of sesame and the kimchi was crisp with the perfect amount of tang and spice!! Make sure to order the California rolls as a side to your main dish. You will NOT be disappointed. Also order some of the miso soup. This is also made from scratch. The sushi chef is awesome and is consistent. The sushi was fantastic. The sushi eaters had 12 pieces of sushi and 2 rolls. The fish was really fresh and tasty, and I'm pretty darn picky with sushi. The rest of the family had chicken and shrimp bento, which they thoroughly enjoyed, and they were not happy about going to a sushi restaurant. The only reason they got 4 stars and not 5 is because we waited a few minutes before getting service, but the waiter said the waitress who was supposed to be serving us was late. Best affordable Asian cuisine I've had since moving to Washington. I got a takeout order of the Family Party for 3, one of the House Special Sushi Rolls, and a side order of egg rolls. The teriyaki was tender and flavorful, without having that overly sweet doused-in-teriyaki-sauce flavor of some of the cheaper places in town. The chicken fried rice was moist and amazingly fresh. The chicken katsu was crispy. The sweet and sour chicken was probably the best sweet and sour I've eaten in years, if not the best I've ever eaten. The gyoza (fried) was crispy and delicious, the egg rolls were still crunchy and packed full of cabbage. Did I mention the sushi? Best sushi I've had since moving to Washington, and leaps-and-bounds ahead of Trapper's Sushi. The staff was friendly and efficient, the restaurant was comfortingly clean and well-organized, with plenty of space to sit and walk about. The staff speaks English well, so language is not a barrier for those of us lacking in Asian language fluency, and they are very willing to answer any questions regarding menu items. The menu is large, the food is reasonably priced, and there is a variety of dishes from the most popular culinary regions of the Far East. Next time I will have to try some of the other items on the menu, and believe me, there will be a next time. read more

I called back to complain in which I was told "that's what you ordered", and they offered to send me a second box of rice and chicken.
