Now days I like to highlight places that well are taking advantage of "inflation". Food costs up less 2% from 2024. 5% from 2023 to 2024. So less 7% over last 2 years. Yet here me u prices jumped 35 to 40% from 2023 prices. Just not worth it. Atta he's 2023 menu

On the hunt for great teriyaki in Tacoma, Gig Harbor options are very disappointing. This place delivered. I ordered the chicken breast teriyaki and gyoza. Chicken was great, texture was spot on, some places just have a weird chicken taste and are rubbery. Salad dressing was classic, lettuce was fresh and crisp. Rice was great. My only criticism is I did not get a gyoza sauce, not sure if it was missed or maybe they don't offer. This was a pick up order and the gentleman that took and gave me my order was very pleasant. Only reason did not do 5 stars is it didn't knock my socks off but definitely will be returning when I have a craving for some solid teriyaki.

I came because I saw the reviews. Everything hit the spot here. The spicy chicken teriyaki was perfect and the gyoza was excellent. Very nice and friendly customer service and beyond my expectation. The sweet salad dressing too! Yum

So my quest has begun to find the best Japanese and Chinese food in the area. Today we decided to try takeout from Mama's Teriyaki. Based on previous reviews we were really looking forward to trying it. We ordered the Kung Pao Chicken and Chicken Yakisoba. As you can see by the pictures the food looks great. Unfortunately, the flavor was not as good as it looks. The Kung Pao Chicken was chewy and there was no flavor to it. The Yakisoba had a bit more flavor but still rather bland for what you would expect for a good Yakisoba. The ambiance is clean and unassuming. The service was very good. We only wish that the food was as good as the service. Perhaps this was just an off day and maybe our quest will take us back to Mama's again in the future.

Needed to stop and eat lunch while doing errands. This place was top recommended here on Yelp. Mama, you checked allllll the boxes. Clean interior. Friendly staff, who was able to make recommendations on what their favorite was because their menu has soooo many options! I got the chicken teriyaki (lunch portion) which came with two scoops rice, chicken, and a side salad. It was definitely large enough to take left overs home and have another meal out of. My husband got the spicy teriyaki, and a friend of ours got the orange chicken. Everything was delicious, and I would highly recommend stopping in for lunch or dinner if in the area!

(FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

However, my son really wanted to take us on a "date". I'm glad we agreed because the chef was funny and entertaining which kept the kids engaged. The food was priced accordingly for the portion we got. One meal can easily feed 2. My only feedback is that the soy sauce makes the food salty and one note. Great if you love teriyaki. Kids loved it of course. I appreciated the cook on my filet mignon and the chef obliged my request to skip adding the sauce on my salmon. My Mom had Mahi Mahi and I would order that next time. Each grill has 8 seats. Since we were a party of 5 and we came mid afternoon on a Saturday, we didn't have to share the space. I've tried the regular menu a long time ago and I can't recall if it was a good meal. Seems like there are a lot of recent reviews of the sushi being bad. Hopefully the owners will take the feedback into account because I really wanted to go back to try the sushi!

My boyfriend and I was in the area so we decided to stop by and saw they even had lunch specials. We arrived and there were a few tables as well as a few customers waiting for a take out order. We waited to be seated and it didn't take long before our waitress led us to a table near the window. We were given three different menus composing of their regular menu, lunch menu and a fun guide to help sushi lovers/non-lovers to find a roll that best suits them. They offer quite a bit of variety for people who enjoy sushi, who prefer non-sushi items and even a fun non-alcoholic drinks menu for those who enjoy coffee, fruity drinks or sodas. The decor in here is very minimal and doesn't really fit the vibes that they seem to be going for, as they have beautiful piano music playing the background and it feels like they are trying to go for a more upscale experience from their presentation, food offerings and prices. They do also have infused orange water too, so I feel they should do more with their decor to truly elevate the experience here. Our waitress was very professional and efficient, she came to check on us when appropriate and served other tables with the same professionalism and smile. I got the Mermaid Princess which was beautifully and tastefully crafted! Themed drinks and food can be tricky if it's just randomly thrown together but you can tell there was a creative and thoughtful mind behind this creation. For food, I got their NY steak yakimono with my choice sides being the miso soup and white rice, while my boyfriend got the Double Bubble choosing the Philadelphia roll and shrimp tempura roll. We got an order of their shrimp tempura basket later too and it arrived pretty quickly. I asked for my NY steak to be cooked medium rare and they executed it perfectly as it was tender and juicy. The miso soup was good but disappointing as it was just the broth, no seaweed, tofu or green onions to make it more memorable. They do also give much more rice than necessary compared to the meat ratio. My boyfriend's rolls were hearty as other places have smaller rolls but the cuts of ingredients and amount of rice was definitely more generous than other sushi restaurants. The shrimp tempura's exterior was perfectly crunchy while the inside was soft and chewy. I definitely want to come back to try their other cocktails, food items and sushi rolls.
