We had an amazing experience here last month. The food is really good and the restaurant was very nice inside. This is a kid friendly place. My kids really enjoyed seeing the Koi fishes. The food was delicious. They have a buy two and get one free for sushi which was nice. The waitress we had was so sweet she overheard that it was my daughter's birthday and surprised her with some mochi. Definitely will come back.

New ownership! Rolls were sooooo good. I haven't had good rolls in Tacoma in a long time. Owner and servers were really friendly and they even served banchan. Highly recommend if you're having sushi cravings.

Looking for a family lunch date, also needed some amazing chicken katsu! First time, was not sure if but was hopeful;thanks to other reviews we have it a try. Plus thankfully it was close to where we shop for grocery specialties. Greeted quickly, the host was very polite and friendly. Brought us over water and straws. Waiter, friendly-answered questions. Made sure the child's food came out first and it was great! Always looking for a decent, yet delicious restaurant that does not hurt our stomach's or make us stick later. This restaurant did not disappoint, the fish was fresh, the rolls were soft and sturdy, the miso soup plus side dishes were all a wonderful treat while waiting for our meals to come. Each time a dish came it was more and more amazing. We ordered the Jasmine tea and the ginger peach tea. We did not see a sweetener but also did not ask for any. The water and ice taste clean, if you care about those things. Tables were clean, the restaurant did not have an any strange orders and the restrooms were clean and well maintained. The only exception to how excellent the service was: Two dishes were forgot, the shrimp and the cheesecake. Also the menu says plain cheesecake but when it came out there was chocolate sauce and cream on the side. Next time we come back, I will ask for no sauce and also the cheesecake is not homemade or made in house. I am only assuming because I make cheesecake from stretch and it time plus you it cost for quality cheese. Though two items were forgotten, all the staff were in between having their own lunch and all the staff made to sure someone was being attentive to the customers that were still dining. My heart and stomach was filled with happiness to see them all eating and sharing conversations of their day and general life. I appreciate everyone who works here and I am looking forward to sharing this wonderful experience with others! As always stay safe and healthy out there and I will see you all at my next bite! :0)

This restaurant is phenomenal. The ambiance beautifully displays Japanese decor and culture. The employees are very kind and welcoming, and the food was delicious! There are rooms where you can dine sitting on the floor, which I'd love to try someday. This is a staple and go-to whenever I am in the Tacoma and Lakewood area. Highly, highly recommend !!

I always come to Kyoto for the chirashi bowl. It's fresh! Other menu items and rolls that I've tried are pretty great too but their raw items are always a shining star.

I just took my parents here for their 49 anniversary. It was a great choice! My parents were very impressed by both the food and service. Our server was friendly and joked with my husband while helping my mom make decisions on the food. Banchan: To start they give you what I think of as banchan. You don't order or select these, they just bring you little dishes of yummy. My husband loved the fried oysters, my favorite was the mushrooms, and I don't even like mushrooms! Sushi Rolls: They have a special buy two get one free on sushi rolls. We got Sumo, Snow‑Maggedon, and Rainbow roll. They were all very good. My mom thought they were the best she has ever had. I loved the cilantro on the Sumo. Bento Boxes: We got the regular, one with tofu and one with beef. I loved the fried tofu, it was crispy on the outside and custard on the inside, very good. My dad liked the beef. The tempura was crispy and even the salad was great. The Rainer bento was beautiful and so good. Nigiri: The regular bento came with four pieces of nigiri. So much care was put into each piece, not just fish put on rice. One piece had shaved green herb. It also had six pieces of tekke maki. Cost: We spent $250 with tip, which is a lot, but we did get a lot of food.

I wanted to like them. Super cute resto with a bridge and koi and private tatami rooms for larger parties. Service was slow in a half empty restaurant. 10 min before we had menus or water. While we ordered, we requested a fork for our young dining companion and when they brought out his food, we asked again. I asked after waiting 5 mins again. She said she was bringing it... but didn't. I asked at the counter. And waited and then at the sushi counter... I had to get the owner involved to just get a fork. It was then brought out with the other dishes. The kid had cold food now. The owner and wait staff then became overly friendly and touched and hugged me, like I was her friend... not ok... The food was not great. Sushi rice was sour, not seasoned appropriately. Katsu was good and the teriyaki was bulgogi with Will probably not go again. So many decent Japanese restaurants in the vicinity .

The food was incredible, the staff pleasurable, and the experience, unforgettable. Visiting the Tacoma area for the first time and this popped up on our radar for a nice dinner out. The moment you walk in everyone on the staff is greeting you with a smile, a genuine smile! Servers were very helpful in ordering, and the sushi was perfect! We also ordered the BBQ bone in short ribs (must order!) and the teriyaki chicken, both cooked to perfection. The chicken did include a salad which was nice! Highly recommend if in the area and to all the locals, please visit Kyoto next time you are looking for a night out, it will make your night!!

Great service, AMAZING food, not one thing we didn't enjoy eating! The restaurant has a beautiful entryway with flowing water & fish to see! The sushi was 10/10.

The employees are great people, everything in here feels very authentic and the vibe is exactly what you want in a Japanese restaurant. And the food here is top notch. Would definitely come back again

I devoured it so quickly, it was amazing. I will 100% stop here again. The miso soup and edamame were included and were also delicious. The young girl working also gave me an orange slice which I think was just her being friendly. She and the older couple making the food were so friendly and kind. Service was impeccable, food was delicious, and ambience was very calm and clean. This is a wonderful place to stop if you're craving sushi and living in the area. I hope it was just a slow night when I was there, because they deserve a lot of customers!

Such a cute little spot! We only planned to stop in for a quick lunch and a small bite, but…read more.. yeah, that plan did not stick. The place was super welcoming, and you can tell right away the fish is fresh. They started us off with miso soup and edamame on the house, which was such a nice touch. We ordered the Super Dragon Roll and the Spider Roll--both were great. We also tried the Super Crunch, which was just okay compared to the rainbow Roll. The real surprise though? The green mussels. Absolutely divine. To top it all off, they brought us peeled orange slices at the end, and it was the perfect, refreshing finish to the meal. Came in for a quick lunch, left very full and very happy. Will definitely be back if we are ever in Seattle again.

(FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

I'm going to preface this review by saying that this is not the type of place I would normally come…read moreto myself. That being said it was still a good experience! The food was tasty and plentiful and there were lots of options for someone like myself who doesn't eat much seafood, so that was really great! The wait staff was very friendly and helpful and answered lots of my questions. So here's the part that I found frustrating It seemed unnecessarily complicated. I acknowledge that I'm not used to the way a sushi buffet restaurant is set up, so it could be a "me" thing. That being said, it was very complicated. We had a large group, and they wanted everyone who was on the same dinner plan to be at the same table. Okay, we can do that. Then we can only use one device to order from. So we had to pass the phone around to have everybody order. Up to 15 items per table every 15 minutes. Any one of these things wouldn't be a big deal, but there seemed to be so many complicated rules that it truly felt a bit like work. In the end, I went there for a friend's birthday and had a great time. Left very full of delicious food and good memories, so that's all that mattered. Still would recommend.
