Love this place, have been eating here for years, it's nice to support a small family business. They not only have great sushi but they also have other Japanese dishes as well. The server gave great suggestions too. Highly recommend

I had not realized there was an authentic Japanese restaurant in Tacoma as the closest one I had visited was Miyabi Sushi in Tukwila. The opportunity to visit here was when my boyfriend and I were searching for a place to rent out and we grabbed dinner at Tama Sushi as it was nearby. The exterior was rather small but there was only a few cars and one of the cars we had parked right next to was a take out order so they were leaving after we got out. As we entered, we were greeted by the sushi chef and waitress then told to seat ourselves where we felt comfortable. We decided to take a seat at the sushi bar as it wasn't often we did that. The interior matches the lighting, spacing and decorations of an authentic Japanese restaurant with tatami shades cover the window, colorful lanterns are aligned on the wall and other signature décor. J-pop was playing faintly in the backyard where it was pleasant and not blaring, which I also think fits the aesthetic. Our waitress, Emily was very friendly and professional. She made sure to give us extra time to look over the menu and ensured that our order was exactly what we wanted. She did a fantastic job checking in on us, and we were even surprised when our sushi chef checked up on us and refilled our waters. It was a wonderful experience and probably one of the closest experiences we'll have of true Japanese restaurant dining. The chef made nice conversation was us as well, and even spoke with us in Japanese as we are both learning for a future trip to Japan. Overall, it was such a wonderful experience and we would love to return again to try our more of their sushi and entrees!

OMG you can't pass up this Japanese restaurant if you want authentic Japanese food in Tacoma. Very unassuming exterior & they only do take out orders. Their website has pictures so you know what your ordering. We are from Hawaii so most Asian restaurant don't taste that good to us, but this place was right on the money. Speaking of money the prices are so reasonable for what you get. Young lady who answers the phone speaks English well so don't have to worry about accent or language barrier. One plus plenty free parking on side of restaurant. We ordered the sukiyaki and nabe udon, both came with everything and was piping hot (sometimes when you pick up your food it's cold or warm this was not the case), it was HOT didn't have to heat up. Highly recommend this restaurant, they definitely take pride in their food they pump out and it's all done to perfection! Our go to in Tacoma

Before I start this review, I want to say that their phone number is 2537983790 and not whatever google or their webpage has outdated. I told the owners already so hopefully they change this. A wonderful authentic Japanese restaurant. During covid they are opened and they are also serving only take out orders. Very sweet workers and owners. I ordered the sashimi entree for my dad, a saba shio dinner set for my mom, and a pork tonkatsu dinner bento entree for my husband. I was pleasantly impressed with every bite, as the flavors are just robust. The fried items had fresh oil taste to it, and the sauces that go with it were impeccable. I love how they had a lot of tofu and seaweed in their miso soup, it was hearty and had a good umami taste to it. We will be back.

The atmosphere was cozy and inviting, and the staff was very attentive and friendly. The sushi was fresh and beautifully presented, and very authentic Japanese sushi. The restaurant's attention to detail and the chef's skillful preparation made the dining experience truly exceptional. I can't wait to go back and try more of their delicious offerings!"

We had their pearls on the beach sushi roll which was pretty good. The sushi was fresh and I enjoyed the sauce that came with it. The service was okay. The food took some time to make. The server lost my credit card and I was the one that had to bring it up for them to find it so that was disappointing. The ambiance is nice. The non-hibachi area has a nice setting with nice flowers and lighting on the ceiling. However, during busy hours, it can be pretty loud due to the hibachi area.

However, my son really wanted to take us on a "date". I'm glad we agreed because the chef was funny and entertaining which kept the kids engaged. The food was priced accordingly for the portion we got. One meal can easily feed 2. My only feedback is that the soy sauce makes the food salty and one note. Great if you love teriyaki. Kids loved it of course. I appreciated the cook on my filet mignon and the chef obliged my request to skip adding the sauce on my salmon. My Mom had Mahi Mahi and I would order that next time. Each grill has 8 seats. Since we were a party of 5 and we came mid afternoon on a Saturday, we didn't have to share the space. I've tried the regular menu a long time ago and I can't recall if it was a good meal. Seems like there are a lot of recent reviews of the sushi being bad. Hopefully the owners will take the feedback into account because I really wanted to go back to try the sushi!

I had high…read moreexpectations, but since I wasn't particularly hungry, I sat down with a casual mindset, just planning to have a light meal. After finishing, my biggest takeaway was: how has this place managed to stay open for so long? Environment: The place is clean, and both the sushi counter and the freshness of the ingredients are evident to the eye. The chefs' uniforms are also very neat. Taste: Sorry, it's hard to put into words! I ordered the lunch combo. The server asked how I wanted my beef done, and I said medium rare would be fine. But the beef was really tough! The tempura was okay. My friend had the pork cutlet rice bowl--the cutlet wasn't crispy, and the sauce was poured directly on top instead of being served on the side as we requested. So neither of us finished our food and we left. Fun fact: Tempura, though it's deep-fried, actually has the second-lowest calorie count among all Japanese dishes. So what's the lowest? Sorry, I forgot. A long time ago, Japan was considered the end of the continent, so many things that made their way there were seen as reaching the ultimate destination. As a result, the Japanese would thoroughly study everything that came--whether it was swords, food, tea ceremony, etc.--which eventually gave rise to what we now call craftsmanship or the spirit of mastery.

You'll often see the owner, Jose, making the sushi orders himself. He was trained by a Japanese sushi chef who in turn was trained in Japan. The ingredients are very clean and the portions are a good value. The sashimi slices are thick! The scallops are velvet in your mouth. The tempura is cooked perfectly. The sushi roll selections are unique and not like other places that just offer the same flavor. Have you ever ordered a couple rolls and they're basically the same? That won't happen here. Service was fast during the lunch rush. Server was friendly. No complaints. The restaurant is clean and the building it's in has a lot of character and history being in DT. Con: One thing I will ding them on is their Tonkatsu. I've had the Tonkatsu plate and the Donburi. Both times they were overcooked and dry. Come for the sushi!

(FYI, for weekends and holidays, you'll be charged the dinner price all day). Since it was our first time, our server kindly explained how the ordering system works. You place your sushi orders through one phone with a limit of 15 items every 15 minutes. Drinks and refills are recommended to be ordered directly through your server so they don't take up item slots. Even if you order less than 15 items, you still wait the 15 minutes before placing another round. It sounds a little confusing at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's pretty simple! One of the cutest parts of the experience was having our food delivered by a little robot server with a cat face. Just make sure to grab the food from the section glowing blue so you don't accidentally take another table's order. Super fun and honestly memorable! By the time we were getting full, my family joked that the cat face looked menacing, because we were hoping no more food would be brought to our table lol. The orders don't all arrive at the same time and some can be delayed, so I'd suggest somewhat trying to keep track of your orders if you don't want to go overboard. The sashimi was delicious and the portions are HUGE, so definitely pace yourself because they do charge for leftovers. My son got a little too excited and overordered, so we ended up paying the leftover fee. However, I was genuinely impressed that Sumo Sushi actually allows you to take leftovers home, even with the fee included. I mean, you'll have to pay the fee either way, but I've never been to an AYCE sushi restaurant that allowed leftovers as takeout before. I really respect how serious they are about reducing food waste. They also have a small buffet section you can grab already prepared/cooked food from while waiting for your sushi orders. My absolute favorites were the miso soup, seafood boil(?), and the tempura fish that lives rent free in my head (I should have asked if I could order that fish for takeout!). They also had other hot foods, meats, and seafood options that were tasty. The dessert section was more basic (flan, jello, fortune cookies, etc.), so I skipped dessert this time (besides the fortune cookies hehe). The service, in general, was fantastic. While we were dining, a child nearby celebrated a birthday with their family and the staff went ALL OUT singing happy birthday with light-up decorations and so much energy. It was adorable and way more effort than most restaurants put in. My only small critique is that the "French Fries" listed on the menu are actually sweet potato fries. They tasted good, and I normally like sweet potatoes, but it definitely caught us off guard because it wasn't what we expected. When we left, the staff kindly said goodbye to us, including an older gentleman near the door who consistently seemed focused on customer service and even asked if we wanted condiments packed with our leftovers. We had such a lovely experience and I would consider Sumo Sushi as probably one of the better AYCE sushi spots in the area. We'll definitely be back!

My boyfriend and I was in the area so we decided to stop by and saw they even had lunch specials. We arrived and there were a few tables as well as a few customers waiting for a take out order. We waited to be seated and it didn't take long before our waitress led us to a table near the window. We were given three different menus composing of their regular menu, lunch menu and a fun guide to help sushi lovers/non-lovers to find a roll that best suits them. They offer quite a bit of variety for people who enjoy sushi, who prefer non-sushi items and even a fun non-alcoholic drinks menu for those who enjoy coffee, fruity drinks or sodas. The decor in here is very minimal and doesn't really fit the vibes that they seem to be going for, as they have beautiful piano music playing the background and it feels like they are trying to go for a more upscale experience from their presentation, food offerings and prices. They do also have infused orange water too, so I feel they should do more with their decor to truly elevate the experience here. Our waitress was very professional and efficient, she came to check on us when appropriate and served other tables with the same professionalism and smile. I got the Mermaid Princess which was beautifully and tastefully crafted! Themed drinks and food can be tricky if it's just randomly thrown together but you can tell there was a creative and thoughtful mind behind this creation. For food, I got their NY steak yakimono with my choice sides being the miso soup and white rice, while my boyfriend got the Double Bubble choosing the Philadelphia roll and shrimp tempura roll. We got an order of their shrimp tempura basket later too and it arrived pretty quickly. I asked for my NY steak to be cooked medium rare and they executed it perfectly as it was tender and juicy. The miso soup was good but disappointing as it was just the broth, no seaweed, tofu or green onions to make it more memorable. They do also give much more rice than necessary compared to the meat ratio. My boyfriend's rolls were hearty as other places have smaller rolls but the cuts of ingredients and amount of rice was definitely more generous than other sushi restaurants. The shrimp tempura's exterior was perfectly crunchy while the inside was soft and chewy. I definitely want to come back to try their other cocktails, food items and sushi rolls.
