I've had hit and miss food and service. My first time it was great, delicious food and good service. My second time it was really crappy service, the waitress kept playing on her phone, and ignoring the customers, and the food wasn't as good. The fry oil was old, and it ruined the taste of the chicken katsu. I wouldn't go out of my way to eat there, but if someone else wanted to go, I wouldn't object to eating there again. It's such a shame to see the service spiraling out of control every time we come in. The food is delicious but the wait time gets longer with each visit even if we are the only ones there. You can tell the management has issues with handing off tasks to their employees and feel the need to do it themselves. It's even difficult to get water on the table. Also, food being delivered one at a time makes for a difficult family dinner.... It's awkward if one person finished their meal but the others have yet to receive theirs. We got take out and ordered the family meal and then the bulgogi bento box and it was all very good. The family meal came with teriyaki, kalbi, yakisoba, California roll, fried rice and katsu chicken. It was more than enough for our family and we all loved it. However, it took a little longer than most teriyaki places, that is the only downfall to this restaurant but other than that, very satisfying! Very good prices as well and a good amount of food. Great sushi! I'm a sushi lover and am always wanting to try new places. My friend suggested this place as it is close to her house. I'm SO happy she did! The people were very friendly, we got there five minutes before close and they were happy to help us (although they would not allow us to dine in the gladly filled our takeout order.) The sushi was to die for I usually go to places where the sushi is on a track because I enjoy variety when i eat sushi, but this place had really reasonable prices so we were able to mix and match. They have a very large selection and also offer Teriyaki. They offer a punch card which earns you a free sushi roll every so many visits. read more

it was SUPER good!! a few friends and I went because on Saturdays we don't get included dinners at college so we might as well go out. We wanted someplace cheap and tasty! This was it! Proportions were big but not massive and high quality and inexpensive (the last one a must for college students). Excellent! We came in at the end of the dinner rush as a large noisy party was just finishing up. They promptly cleaned a booth for us. My wife has some allergy issues and the lady taking our order completely accommodated our needs while making some good suggestions. The general tso's chicken was just alright but the sushi was absolutely delicious! Fresh quality ingredients paired with great customer service. I came with a group of friends and we were super hungry after hiking Mt. Rainier (we didn't eat lunch). The service was friendly and the restaurant is quite small but nice. My friends and I had a good time chatting with the waitress while we waited for our food. They served Chinese, Korean, and Japanese despite the name being Japanese. Usually at restaurants, we thought that they underestimate the amount of mouths they can feed with their portions, but I must say their portions were huge. We ordered the party plus meal which served 4-5 people. It had 5 huge dishes of fried rice, chow mein, sweet n sour pork, chicken katsu and tempura, and bulgogi, kalbi, and chicken teriyaki for only $40! We came here expecting cheap food that might not have tasted super awesome and came out blown away. If you want quality, quantity, and at a good price after a good day's hike, this is the place to come eat. read more

Great food and service with a laid back atmosphere. I ate quality asian food for most of my life and I can add this place to my list of great places to eat at. I ordered spicy chicken, beef bulgogi, and won ton soup to say the dishes left some flavor to be desired would be an understatement. Although they were not horrible they just lacked flavor. I normally don't complain about food but this place was just alright. I think my biggest complain was the fact that my chicken teriyaki and my friend's orange chicken came out cold which makes me think it had been sitting in the back for a while. I also asked if there was any way I could get a side of steamed or cooked broccoli that I was willing to pay extra for but the lady working said no which makes me think everything else was pre-made in the back. No big deal just something that kind of shows the food might not be too fresh. Nice service but pretty slow and the actual food tasted okay despite being cold. I love this place, super close to work. Owner lady is very nice, and always friendly. Food is the best teriyaki around. It's always made fresh to order, and when you order to go, they wait until the last minute to box it, so it's still fresh and hot, but yet wont get soggy from being boxed up forever! Cheap Sushi which is nice but the whole place smelled horrible and we couldn't substitute absolutely anything on the menu which is ridiculously stupid. The waitress had an attitude and had her cell phone out the entire time. When my husband went to the bathroom he came back and told me that while he was waiting he noticed there were two bowls of noodles waiting to be cooked sitting on the shelf of a TV stand. As the chef came out of the bathroom my husband entered and immediately noticed the bathroom smelled of weed and air freshener. Needless to say he didn't want to be there a second longer. read more

I had been going to Umai for years, but things are changing and not for the better. They used to have someone that ran the front of the shop that had a great attitude, remembered me when I would come in and was a pleasure to deal with. Not so with the current hostess. The food is still pretty good. The sushi has always been very good. But twice now, after I've signed the receipt I've discovered an additional tip has been added on. I discover it when I'm balancing my account. This most recent time it was only $1, but it's annoying nonetheless. I'll be finding a new takeout place now. 3 stars because the food is good. read more

This place is kinda awesome! We ordered a spider roll, teriyaki chicken, and gyoza. All of it was amazing. The spider roll was super delicious, and generous size. The gyoza was hot and crunchy. There teriyaki had great flavor and was charbroiled to perfection. We sat at the bar by the sushi guy and he kept us entertained while we ate. I would definitely come back here! read more

I live within an area that has over 3 dozen Teriyaki or Sushi restaurants that are comparable to the menu of Umai. I would rather have my meals at Umai, than any of it's other competitors. I always bring my family or friends there for dinner and, sit up front of the Sushi bar. My family and I have been going there for about 5 years. This was our family place to go we loved everything about the food the sushi just everything. The owner knew me by name she made me feel very welcome. Today I decide to go my kids are gone have some sushi, the sushi was gross soggy, very poorly made. Everything about my experience from the customer service to eating the sushi when I got home was horrible.
