People don't usually recommend guys like Michael because they want to keep him for themselves, like not letting people know about a really good fishing spot or a broken change machine that gives you five quarters for a dollar, at least to keep the demand down. But, I'm feeling generous. Before coming to Michael for an oil change, I avoided gas station repairmen who seemed a little too "how much you got?" when asking "how much?". I foolishly went to places that do things in a jiffy, speedee kinda way, only to be hit with shoddy work and shady upsells (i.e. $60 to top off my air filter oil). But because he is within walking distance, I saw him about my problematic Kia Soul, which he diagnosed for free, and I felt like I trusted the guy, even if I barely understood him. So, when I returned much later for an oil change, the guy gave me a rough estimate (no paperwork) and charged me $5 less than the quote. No high performance oil options, no oil filter disposal fee, just an old-fashioned oil change. read more

I am grateful that there are still honest mechanics out there who aren't trying to con folks. Michael is a friendly, honest, and clearly experienced mechanic who knows what he's doing. He will never fool folks for his own financial gain. In fact, he's such a good person he will even give customers cheap solutions that make them NOT have to bring their car in later for repairs, such as his recent recommendation to me to go to the auto parts store and buy some cleaning solution for my catalytic converter. My check-engine light had come on, and, being that I am female, he could have said I need a whole new catalytic converter, but he is a good person and was helpful in telling me this was all my engine needed. No further work. Also, I recently heard a squeaky noice coming from my tires and I stopped by there to tell him about it. He jumped into my car and said "let's give it a drive and I'll take a listen", and he was able to tell that I needed new brake pads. He also offered to drop me off at my house before he started working on my car, since my husband was at work and couldn't pick me up from the shop. Then when he finished the work on my car, he drove over and picked me up and took me back to his shop. Excellent service! It's really great to know that this guy is willing to do this for me. Since I live nearby, that helps, but him offering that really helped make things less complicated for me. OH, and there was another cool thing he did: I had been on a road trip and my headlight went out so I stopped in at a gas station on the road and that mechanic put in a new one but it didn't last me the whole trip home. (So annoying.) When I got back into town, Michael replaced it with the real-deal. At first I thought it might mean something more serious had gone wrong that would cost me a lot to fix, but Michael, being the honest man that he is, just said "no, just the bulb needs replacing". Michael Is hands down the best mechanic I've been to in the last 4 years. Recently I've moved to south San Jose and coming here was a bit far. I came to get my water pump done and Michael went the extra mile. All the time have my cars have been fixed, they stay fixed. From a 1980s car to a 2012 car, this shop does it all. When I moved, I went to a local shop down Monterey road and the service was slow and cheaper. Wow, did that mess me up big time, I paid double to get it fixed. The guy who did my oil change did not tighten up the cap and my oil leaked, which led to so many things. They also sold me old brakes that were sharpened or something. I eventually went back to Ultimate Auto Repair and Michael showed me what had happened and how my brakes were used (comparing it to a brand new brake rotor). Thank goodness this was caught on and Michael fixed everything for me - even showing me the old parts that came off my car. He has never sold me anything extra and is a very honest owner. If it needs to be fixed, he will take me straight to the problem and let me see it for myself before anything. He does his best to find the cheapest parts for our cars. This is what you call great work integrity. I've referred all of my friends and family's and even coworker to Ultimate Auto Repair and always, have they left satisfied and remember who their mechanic shop was. Found an out of round tyre situation and they showed showed me the issue and also a transmission drip I never knew I had. Friendly service and truly honest, they really do not go out of their way to find a reason to charge you more. This isnt the stealership, this is a reputable small business. As a small operation/shop, do not expect to show up to a 10-bay service department - this isn't it. This is an old style small shop that actually does mechanic work rather than just replaces parts until they luck onto the problem. Will definitely be back again for our service needs. read more

We've been taking our two cars to Michael for around 4 years. We heard about him through the recommendation of a friend. We find him to be honest, reliable and consistent in the great quality of repairs. I appreciate the explanations of what he's done or what will be needed and feel very comfortable asking questions. He will tell you if you can wait on a repair rather than taking your money. For example, I was sure I needed new front brakes and made an appointment. When he checked them out, he let me know there was still a reasonable amount of life in them - months. He was willing to change them then but was honest enough to let me know I had more time. I'm taking the car back in the next week or two to finally get the brakes done. And he was right - I got another ~7 months out of them. If I ever have an issue with the work, I'd be comfortable raising it with Michael. Communication is important for any business in my opinion and I wouldn't hesitate to call him with concern...because I just haven't had to! Ultimate auto repair is honest and fair. I will definitely be using them for all my future car needs. What do you do when you don't know anything about cars and your car starts to make an awful noise like metal scraping along the ground every time the car moves? COMPLETE MELT DOWN. The screeching, scraping sound was so awful I thought a part of the engine had fallen and was scraping the ground (is that even possible? i have no idea). I live within a few blocks of UAR and saw the business every day on my drive to drop off my siblings for school but knew nothing about the business - I called them regardless out of convenience of location since I needed help immediately. I was preparing for the worst. The worst being some massive repair that would hurt the bank account. I called and they told me to come by and they listened to my car and casually told me it was probably a heat shield and that it was nothing to worry about, a minor repair. I dropped my car off on Monday morning and within a couple of hours, I got the call that a rock had somehow gotten into the engine and was bouncing around. It was quite obvious how little I knew about cars, they easily could've come up with some crazy random repair (which has happened to me before at other places) and charged a ridiculous amount. They are family owned, so I can definitely say the service is spectacular compared to the franchise owned places nearby as they are alway trying to sell me something extra. read more

Same as great reviews, my friend strongly recommended this shop to me. It was my fault to go there without cost estimate because of my friend's recommendation but I never expected regular maintenance would cost over $180. When I asked about the details, he explained good parts including high quality engine oil but labor cost also didn't make sense to me. I have never seen regular maintenance including air filter, cabin air filter and LUBE costed $180! Please don't go there for the just regular maintenance unless you want to be surprised. Moving to a new city is exciting, but finding a new, trustworthy mechanic can be scary! I live across town in east San Jose but my new neighbors, whom are such nice people kept telling me about how they used to live in Los Gatos and would always gone to Ultimate Auto Repair and would still go there whenever a car problem comes around even since moving as they do not trust another mechanics. Took my car in, expecting bad news. Bad news was delivered, with tact and honesty. I'm a 21 year-old female, no knowledge on automobiles and have (nearly) been taken advantage of in these situations many times. Michael was honest with me about prices and needs. Recommended what he thought he should do for me and where I could possibly have the work done cheaper/more specialized in the particular (he recommended a elsewhere to do an alignment as he is not specialized in that) - which honestly shows integrity because many shops will just go ahead and do whatever they can to charge more money. I've been to many dealerships in the pat to get my car serviced, but the same problem ALWAYS persist, at ultimate auto repair, I can trust the work to stay fixed. Michael talked me through a few options in that realm and even save the parts for me to see after it has been finished. Outstanding service. Since then, I've taken my car there for all service needs, inspections and any breakdowns/problems over the past 4 years and I've had nothing but friendly service, quality work and fair prices. This place is a joke. If you're willing to put extra bucks down and not get the service desired, this place is for you. First time I went for an oil change, I waited almost 3:30 hours to get my car back. Come on people, we live in the bay area and everyone is in a rush. Second time I took my other car for an error on the screen, my car stayed there for 1 full day and after paying $400 I got my car back with the same error on the screen. when I took the car back to the shop, he said my car had to be at the shop for another day. the day after I got my car back and he charged me another $300 and guess what?! still with the same error on the screen. my friend recommended the shop for me, but it was my fault to go there and get ripped off. read more

Very professional, always doing a great job, and treating customers with utmost care and respect. I live a few blocks and this s a detailed account so basically says great service great guy give it a shot but if you c are to see the elaborate experience I had here's my good review. specifically and to laugh at my friend who Dr i 've :) past it who still has a car she should take here. lol had just got a somewhat new Cadillac from los Gatos Acura bad deal they lied and got me to go past my 30 day return policy and so I took my 2007 Cadillac and it was only the year 2009 so after Acura did me dirty I didn't expect st Claire a Cadillac dealer to not only charge 725 inspection but not refund it with a we will not service your vehicle. LOST in a confusion of parts warranty fought for months to get the warranties to pay for the failed transmission. Mikey had just moved into the empty space at the Chevron. sure Techron but had not ever realized such a hard working mechanic in Los Gatos and to be stereotyped in a service station had already been through 2 gm shift rebuilds note videos not make a gearbox for only the third gear had nothing to lose. I not only was able to drive my most favorite car once I learned the electronic systems failed due to a faulty wire and this great guy at my local gas station figured out what experts at A premiere dealership would not bother with. It was great service he took extra time to treat my car like a problem and found a resolution. it even turned out this Cadillac was a German import and was released to be Autobahn capable. the drink holder it turned out above one of the lighters shorted them. then a short sent the 3 on board computer's to miscalibrate the electronic controlled r transmission, the 4 independently hydraulic sport suspension that evenly adjusts so you can literally take a corner be on the phone use a big lighter to light a cigarette Nd not squeal or spill coffee on the way to work in a 0 to 60 amazing thing for 07. what I am saying here is don't tempt to follow stereotyped perceptions. he too very good care of my car and my utmost respect to the very man I thought would but didn't do what what the dealers did which I presumably stereotyped them as honest and each both lied and cheated me but this corner as station with not much help even getting parts or the tool to unlock the special Cadillac hate key they tried to deny found a way took t h e time and I am very happy to see him occupying the Chevron across from Leigh. SEXUALLY HARRASSED By owner Michael . Today I visited the shop for my regular oil change. When i got there Michael was talking to a customer so i waited in my car. When he was done he walked over to my window, i asked how long it would take he responded reasonably. He then stared at me reached in to my window and poked my thigh and asked why i was wearing shorts.. I quickly pushed off his hand and said because it's hot CLEARLY being about 90 degrees outside. I didnt think much of it at that moment and left my car with him. I returned an hour later, paid and he walked me to my car. As i was backing out he reached out to my window with something in his hand and said "Oh you need this" I couldnt tell what it was i thought maybe an air freshener. When i reached to grab it, it turned out to be a CONDOM!! I said No! No . He insisted I take it! Then said "Oh you dont use them?" Smiled And walked away.. I was in total shock .
