This is the time of year when I start to go crazy at my two favorite beauty stores. With all the promos, reward points, special value sets and freebies, by the end of the year I will be loaded up with products to take me through the next three seasons. I am a Sephora devotee and for years now I have bounced between them and Ulta trying to determine who was the best. I concede that both stores fill a special niche for me. What Ulta does really well is blend drugstore beauty with prestige beauty conveniently divided by the left and the right sides respectively. So in one trip I can get my fav Urban Decay Naked Palette, maybe some Philosophy or Benefit as well as my favorite drugstore stuff like EOS, Rimmel and NYX. Plus on the latter items you can use the $3.50 coupon that's always available. Speaking of Benefit Cosmetics, at the Ulta on Concord Pike their counter is super cute just like their brands packaging and they have a full service brow bar. Yeah, pretty awesome. There is also a hair salon in the back of the store. Add to all of this glory some pretty impressive freebies ( I have gotten a very nice weekend travel bag, a robe, and a face-brush!) and the ever popular 21 days of beauty events and it's easy to become obsessed. read more

Over the past two weeks I have gone into this Ulta store and both times have been treated like literal garbage. On the first trip, was in the morning. I was going in for a new shampoo and conditioner combo, I was about to run out of the Kenra that I use and wanted to try something new. I wanted to go for something either vegetarian or vegan, I'm trying to cut back on harsh chemicals on my skin/body. I was in the store in the hair section for about 20 mins. No one ever greeted me, and there was no one to help me. I ended up getting frustrated and leaving without purchasing because I wasn't helped at all. Then the second trip, was mid day at about 2pm. I went in for makeup wipes and a new cleanser (again something either vegetarian or vegan). I walked in and there were about 5 girls gossiping about one lifted her head and said hello, then went back to their convo. I found my makeup wipes and was roaming around the non elite brands and the elite brands, every SINGLE employee was gossiping, giggling and not paying attention to the MANY customers that were roaming around with a blank confused looks on their faces. Myself being one of them. I know a lot about makeup and both times I went without a beat face and my hair up. I'm not sure if they are profiling women that already have makeup on or if I just caught bad timing. However, I have never been treated like this in any other Ulta stores. Other Ulta stores are nice, friendly, and helpful not looking like a bunch of cliques of girls. read more

Excellent customer service by the cashiers - a woman was confused by the two-line set up while checking out and made a snarky comment to my mother and I, who had the common sense to realize with two registers open and two "wait in line here" stickers on the floor, that there were two lines. The woman made multiple comments about my mother and I, which were handled professionally by the cashier. I really appreciate the customer service, especially during these trying COVID times. Was there yesterday with my husband for Acqua di GIO after shave balm and stuff girl quickly show up for help, but not because she really wants to help us - she wants to notify us that store will close in 5 minutes! When we asked about balm she couldn't find it and recommend us shop online... I found it on the bottom shelf by myself... it looks like they don't care about clients, they only care about store closing time. read more

Ulta has always been my "go to place" for all my beauty needs. Today was no exception, except the waiting to be checked out. Who ever decided they needed two lines should be fired. One line always worked. I waited in line over 20 minutes not realizing they had two lines . No one to explain the floor plan, as there was only one staff member on the floor. Plus they had the one line blocked off so you had to go all around the cosmetic stalls to get out. If there was a fire this would cause a problem! Not a happy customer. read more

Shanon is awesome! I had a blow out from Shanon on a whim, last minute because I learned my VP was coming to town. Now, with that said, I have had blow outs all over Europe, NY, Chicago, Miami, Phila, along my work travels. My hair is long, brittle and burnt from the stylists not having a clue how to blow dry your hair without burning it! Really you need to put a hot blow dryer directly on my hair and burn the hell out of the ends! I learned the way NOT burn your hair, from a stylist in Florence, Italy. They have to take the hair is small sections and hold the blow dryer far. Yea it takes a long time, but so what? I asked Shanon to do that and not only did she do exactly what I asked, she gave me one of the best blow outs i ever had. WHAT AN UNEXPECTED SURPRISE. She is amazing and a great listener. I have spent about $300.00 over the last few weeks trying to fix my bad dye job at high end salons in Philly...She is a great stylist..my hair looked amazing and it never frizzed out in the high humidity last week in Philadelphia. What is not to love about Ulta? They send you coupons, they have great bargains in the scratch-and-dent department, they have el-cheapo makeup (is there any lip gloss better than Bonne Bell?) and fancy-pants prestige makeup too, along with non-pushy reps to slather expensive sparklies on your face. They also have every obscure OPI nail color available. Rock! Their prices are pretty decent, and they're better than decent when you use their ubiquitous coupons. Getting an Ulta club card will earn you free goodies every three months. Best thing, which I just learned tonight: You can return stuff after you've opened it and you'll still get a full refund. Though I prefer to spend my days shopping via the internet sometimes you actually need to go into a store and actually shop. Ulta isn't normally my go to for beauty products especially since Sephora carries all my favorite brands. I had a remaining balance on a gift card and was in need to some new foundation. Ive been into this store before and felt ignored at times,however today i had the full attention of the Bare Essentials girl who helped me match a foundation. She explained to me how to use the products and gave me a a few pro pointers. I was sold once i saw the transformation of my face. Ulta has one up on sephora they offer everyday products(neutrogena, oil of olay) in addition to some "prestige" brands (ultas' verbiage not mine). Todays visit was a 5 star experience , but a few previous stunk like college football players gym socks. its four stars for now read more

I had the worst manicure I ever received here. The lady who did my manicure was shaking, as she told me, "she was hungry" so I had gel nail polish all on my fingers around my nails, she missed whole sides of my nails, then yelled at me for, "tilting my hand in the dryer and making it slide off." ... she only had one gel dryer on my left side so when I crossed my right hand to go in, since she was painting my left hand, it was at an angle and kept getting screwed up. I had this manicure on a Thursday evening and by Saturday it already started coming off (because it was polished over the skin and cuticle!) Such a waste of money!!! On top of it, the lady who did my manicure was telling me how her "daughet isn't stupid and won't move in with a boy until she has a ring....." As someone living with my boyfriend, I was very surprised that she would start saying tihngs like that, not knowing my situation. And personally, I wanted to tell her I don't find it stupid at all, It's practical in that I would rather find out that we weren't going to be able to live together now before we're married rather than after! read more

DO NOT RECOMMEND. I've gotten my hair dyed and touched up there a handful of times and never really had any issues. I usually get basic all over color. I decided to change up my hair and get the front dyed purple which I knew would entail bleaching the front of my hair. The "master stylist" bleached my hair once which I knew was not light enough because I had the darkest shade of brown on my hair (previously done at Ulta). So I had faith in her, she knew it was not light enough but proceeded to put color on the orange/caramel sections. She then realized after she was drying my hair that the color was not showing up. Be mindful this cost close to $300 with a tip. So she stripped my hair and bleached it a second time (bleach wasn't to my roots). The purple came out patchy and brassy. I had excessive dyed stains all over my skin. They rubbed my skin raw when trying to remove it and caused me to have abrasions and scabs on my forehead for 2 weeks. I tried to get my money back, but they only wanted to give me the $85 back from the bleached part despite my ears, neck, and forehead being covered in dyed for days. I am extremely disappointed and I would not recommend getting serviced here. read more

I went there for a haircut and a perm after moving back from California. Denise in the salon was very efficient and friendly and did a great job. She did a good job of cleaning up my hair from a poor hair cut from 4 months ago. This store is also great because you are able to try most of the products to see if you like them before you buy. read more

I traveled an hour from my home to shop at this store to take advantage of their "buy two, get one liter free" sale that happens for a very limited time in December. Unfortunately, they did not have the exact type of product I was looking for; but had several others within the same brand...and the sale ends in less than a week! A Manager named Frank was very very helpful, and told me I could easily exchange one type of shampoo for another type once it was in stock. He even offered to vouch for me if I wanted to exchange the product at another location. I made the purchase and got the liter free, knowing I could exchange it for the correct product once it was indeed in stock. Frank at Ulta Wilmington saved the day for me. Zero rating in my book. First off an employee and I arrived at 9:56 am. Of course she was let in and I wasn't that's not the problem . The problem is their customer service sucked ! Without any words the employee opening the door attempted to shut it in my face. I explained that was very rude and she could of said hey mrs we open in a few minutes but she didn't ! Her reply to me was oh okay . At 10:59 I was still left standing outside with others . Moral is I will not be spending my hard earned money in this establishment who's employees are disrespectful! I don't know what it is, but maybe because it was Sunday and they were very busy, but I just felt like most of the associates working here didn't want to be bothered or were just plain flustered. The cashiers were fine, though! No real issues there. I was looking for a specific beauty sponge and the guy who I asked for help seemed to be so rushed and so frantic, that I thought that I was doing something bad by asking him for help. I didn't appreciate him telling me "maybe you should have called before you came over" after telling me that it was not in stock. I was going to Shoprite across the road, so what the hell buddy?? At least he told me when they were getting their shipments in. That brings me to today. I called the store and was on hold for just around 18 minutes while someone said they'd check to see if this sponge was in stock. I ended up hanging up, calling back and getting someone else on the phone who did tell me that they did not have it. I love the fact that Ulta has a crapload of cosmetics, hair care products, accessories, etc. etc., but sometimes the people working here seem like they don't want to be there or they don't want to be bothered. And God forbid you try to engage in a conversation with them regarding a product, it's like you're taking away their 'chat' time that they could be having with co-workers. It's a shame that there's no Sephora closer, or else I'd shop there. read more

I went to her because I was suffering from acne and she gave a skin care regimen and other helpful advice about my skin. After 3 days of following the regimen I already see a difference in my skin. I have been a platinum customer, specifically with this location, for nearly four years. Have gotten to know many of the sales people over time and typically enjoy coming here. The last few occasions that I've been to the store however... The attitudes have been pretty unsavory. I am generally a very polite, conversational person and a performance artist so I know what I want 90% of the time and don't really need much help. I just had the displeasure of dealing with a very unnecessary negative attitude from a young woman named Lahti. Being in the industry working with customers, you really need to mind your manners. I have done retail and restaurants for years and I never project negativity onto others, even if I'm in a frustrating situation. There was a promotion going on for a particular Foundation and it was the entire reason I came in today all the way from Philly. There was a giant sign right next to her behind the counter as well as Flyers everywhere and a table in the front. When I asked about the brush, she said she wasn't aware of the promotion and I was made to feel stupid for even asking. Needless to say, her co-worker asked her where she been because it was all over the store and I got my brush. Typically I let snide stuff go but I've been coming here for a long time and her attitude was completely unnecessary. read more

I tried Ulta's salon (Concord Pike, DE) for the first time last evening. I made 5:15pm appt online which was convenient and allowed me to choose the price point I desired. I received an email confirmation as well as a phone call to confirm time and price. In my experience, the prices range by expertise so I chose a $46 stylist from the range of $36, $41, $46, $56. I was also entitled to a 25% discount for the Salon. So far so good. I checked in, was offered water and took a seat in the small waiting area by the desk. There was hair on the floor. My stylist came by to tell me she was running behind and that someone would bring me back in 10 minutes or so. She looked at my hair and asked what I wanted. That was my consultation. As promised, I was brought into the shampoo area 10 minutes later by another sytlist. I sat, she left. The floor was dirty...hard to miss since it's white tile. After a few minutes, she came back, barely uttered two words and proceeded to give a really bad shampoo. I could barely feel her hands on my head. She just touched my hair, which is short, so that was quite a feat. Next came the conditioner, it was rinsed off as fast as it was put on and missed one side of my head. She brought me to a chair in the style station, again without a word and left. The floors in this area needed to be cleaned and swept. There was hair and a comb on the floor beside by chair. The chairs were dirty and stained. At 5:30p my stylist appeared, apologized again for the delay and started cutting my hair. Although the chairs are capable of being raised, she never did that. She did not take the time and care I expected from an experienced stylist. After a quick cut, she blew dry my hair. She did not ask how I usually wore or dried it. I was not offered product - odd for a place that sells a boatload of stuff. My hair looked a little like a helmit when I got in my car at 6pm but it was ok when I washed it this morning. All in all, this was a very disappointing experience. Calling this place a "Salon" is a stretch and while I could try another stylist, the lack of cleanliness will keep me away. read more

I cannot say enough good things about this Ulta! 4 stars because the regular staff has opportunity in their customer service. But the salon staff- a dynamic group of perfection. This is my third Ulta salon I've been a client at on account of moving. Before my first appointment, I went in and specifically asked for someone who works magic with blonde highlights on brunettes, I was taken over to Amanda's station at which she had that specific type of client and I've seen her since- about a year now. She is friendly, intuitive and talented. I never leave dissatisfied. During all my visits the whole staff is chatting with clients and engaging and never negative. I adore the culture here and the care that the girls put into making clients happy. read more

I only come to Ulta for high end cosmetics or Matrix hair products. Since Ulta charges too much for common brands such as L'Oreal, Maybelline and Cover Girl. Although the staff is nice, this location is almost always a mess. I have been to several other locations and this one is definitely messy. Maybe the Ulta Co. needs to hire more staff. It may very well be that they are so busy at this location that the present staffing levels aren't sufficient. It is right next to the Concord Mall. read more

I was visiting the ULTA store in Wilmington, Delaware on 1/13/2020 and it really reinforced for me the reasons I go to Sephora or really anywhere other than ULTA. When I walked in, I saw 2 staff working the check out and 5 staff in a circle near the middle/rear of the store. I wandered around looking at different products for about 10 minutes and since no one approached me, I approached the check out staff and asked for assistance since the people in the back were heavily involved in a conversation. The person I spoke with approached the circle and I saw them scatter except one and that one came over to me. The person that came over did not provide me with what I would refer to as 'help'. When I asked her questions, she responded with "well you would have to try them" or "I don't know", mostly she stood there fidgeting and sighing. I assumed she wanted to get away from me. I couldn't tell you her name since she wasn't wearing a name tag but she did have dark green short hair. It was surprising to me that a makeup artist couldn't tell me anything about the different brands of makeup or how to match foundation to skin tone. read more

When I complained , American American hair studio hair stylist was extremely rude and raised her voice. She was doing all this in front of store manager who asked me not to come back there again. I bought a $50 gift card then before I'd left the store I realized it wasn't the right store. When I tried to get a refund I was told that it was 'legal tender' and they wouldn't give me a refund. The clerk didn't warn me it was non refundable before I made the purchase and there was no sign at checkout either so I am out $50. Beware of this company! read more

The store itself is just like any other Ulta, big with lots of products offered. My problem is the customer service. No one is ever around to try and help you, and the help that you get is so half-a**. The people who work in the high end makeup have no idea what they're doing when applying makeup on someone who is trying to find out whether they like it or not. I was trying to get someone to help me for 7 mins. Someone said she would be over shortly but had to go to the bathroom first. Waited another 10 minutes, finally someone else came and attempted to help me but really didn't apply the makeup well. Then another woman comes up to the woman helping me and tells her another person is there for her, so the girl starts to rush my application and I tell her to go ahead and take care of the other person, simply so I could apply the makeup myself, because I knew I could do a better job. I won't be going to Ulta anymore for high end makeup. read more
