Spoon River Animal Clinic

Initially we switched to this vet because the vet we trust and love no longer offered large animal…read moreservices. Spoon River promised and assured us they would be available in the event of a large animal emergency. Not long after we hit a streak of bad luck with our horses. The first incident our horse injured her hoof in the pasture causing an extreme laceration, upon contacting Spoon River they stated they were too busy to send someone and recommended we trailer the horse that couldn't walk 5 feet let alone step up into the trailer to them. It was not until weeks later when the dogs were taken in for shots that we consulted the small animal vet as to what more we could be doing for our horse (she is fine now, no thanks to them). The following spring we had an older horse go down, we knew it was probably his time but wanted to give him a fighting chance. It took them 2 days to finally send someone out and by that point it was entirely too late. The final straw... our horse with known arthritis started swelling, we called and again they were too busy, the next day he was found laying in the pasture unable to get up. For 15 hours I sat with my horse hoping and praying. Yet again Spoon River left us high and dry and for our animal to suffer. It was awful watching my boy struggle and knowing there was nothing I could do for him. I called another veterinary service and they managed to fit us right in and were rushing to get to us. However, by the time they got there it was too late and he had passed on his own. So, if you have large animals please!!!! please!!! do not trust that Spoon River will be there to help you when you need it most. not to mention the unprofessionalism and rude staff. They will never touch any of our animals EVER again.

Hands down, the best vet clinic I've ever been to. The staff are all friendly and Dr. Collins and…read moreDr. Couri are incredible. Dr. Couri has been so kind and helpful when dealing with my FeLV+ kitten. He always calls to check up and never fails to show how truly invested he is in his patients. I'd absolutely recommend Meadowbrook to anyone looking for a new vet or just a better experience than their current clinic. I can't say enough great things!

The bad: This place charges A LOT! I have had the impression more than once that finding every opportunity to add charges during an exam is included in their staff training. Also, there is little/no transparency with charges ahead of time. I am putting it out there so people can be aware. We boarded our dogs and paid a lot extra for their "luxury run". It was supposed to have a tv that played soothing videos and be equipped with cameras that we could log into and check on them at our convenience. We were not allowed to see this in person because of "safety protocol" and the morning we checked them in we were informed that the cameras were down. We had no way of knowing if we got anything that we were charged extra for, and we were charged a lot extra. They were unapologetic about this and did not offer to reduce the bill for the services that were not provided. Over $200 for 24 hours and I have no idea if we got anything we payed extra for. Pros: skilled vets and usually can get an appointment quickly Cons: they squeeze you for every dime and you must take it on faith that you are getting what you paid for.

I moved here from California with a 16 year old cat who was in desperate need of a doctor, so I…read morefound them online and took a chance. Dr. Kuhn and her staff care about your pet as much as you and your family. They're very honest and listen to your concerns and that's what I was looking for in a good Veterinarian for the love of my life. Dr. Kuhn remembers her patients, their needs, and personally calls to check up on them. Services are reasonably priced, no pressure to purchase unnecessary products, and they don't suggested unnecessary procedures.

We've been clients of Prairie Animal Hospital for a while, and overall, we've had some genuinely…read moregood experiences! The staff has been kind and personable, the location is convenient, and our animals have been treated well. I especially appreciate their fear-free approach and the fact that they advertise having properly trained staff to help make veterinary visits less stressful for pets. They've been great with our animals in many ways, which makes our decision to switch clinics a difficult one. Unfortunately, there have been a few experiences that affected our confidence in the practice: A few months ago, when we were treating our pups recurring back issues (something that can happen on and off with the breed), we were sent home with medication at a different dosage than what we had been told in the clinic, and the label had the wrong dosage. We had to call back to clarify, and it was in fact wrong. We understand mistakes happen, but medication dosages need to be accurate, and it was concerning to have to catch that! During another visit a few months later for the same back issues, Dr. Kuhn sent a prescription back to be filled, commenting something along the lines of, "Hopefully they saw that in the back," before leaving without confirming it was being processed. We waited around 15-20 minutes before asking someone to check on it because we heard a lot of laughter and joking - which is great, that's honestly important in a healthy work environment - but we felt we may have been forgotten. When the issue was addressed, we could hear the doctor getting mildly upset with the techs and telling them to hurry up and bring the medication. The technician who came in afterward was very apologetic, and we made sure she knew we didn't blame her. What bothered us was seeing the staff take the brunt of a situation that could have been prevented with better follow-through. Our biggest concern happened on Saturday, October 3, when we believed our dog might be having an emergency. We were established patients, and the website stated that urgent walk-ins were accepted during regular business hours. The website, recorded phone message, and posted hours indicated the hospital was open that Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon, but nobody was there and nobody answered the phone. We ultimately went to Tri-County, but we had hoped to get a second opinion from our established veterinarian first. We understand that staffing issues and unexpected closures happen, but when multiple sources say a veterinary hospital is open, finding it closed when you're seeking urgent care is frustrating and concerning. We also found older reviews describing similar issues a few years back with the same issues, which made us assume this was just the usual. We were also surprised when our dog was ultimately diagnosed with pyometra (a serious uterine infection). We had discussed having her spayed multiple times and had been working on her weight after being told she was overweight. We understand that not every condition can be predicted or caught beforehand, but it left us wondering whether there was anything that could have been discussed or even tested during previous visits. Overall, we genuinely appreciate the staff and the positive experiences we've had here! This isn't to say they haven't treated our animals well, because in many ways they have. However, the medication concerns, the interaction we witnessed between the doctor and technicians, and especially the lack of availability during posted hours when we were worried about an emergency ultimately led us to move our pets' care elsewhere. When we reached out and replied to an inquiry from them about transferring our pets medical records to Meadowbrook, I mentioned all of this in email and never got a response, so I'm not sure they're too worried, but that's okay! We hope this feedback helps the clinic improve, because there are things we truly appreciated about our experience there! Thanks again!
