I should preface this review by saying that I come from California, where we have some amazing ramen, so I have some pretty high standards when it comes to slurp-worthy ramen noodles. Unfortunately Ukiyo fell far short in my book. Perhaps the issue has to do with the availability of familiar ingredients here in Geneva (something I, too, struggle with), but either way, I can't say that Ukiyo is worth a repeat trip.
For me, the disappointment lay in the two main components of the dish: the broth and the noodles. The fish/beef broth we ordered was surprisingly bland- screaming out for some heat, scallions, sesame or ginger. Although the restaurant provided some sesame oil, it did little for the broth. The only thing you could taste we'll in the dish was the sweet meat. Although the noodles were cooked well, they lacked the traditional, slight curl of most ramen noodles and their taste was entirely flavored by the cloyingly sweet meat.
The most I can say about this restaurant is that their service was excellent. The wait staff and cooks were all very friendly, and we were served fairly quickly. However, I think I'll wait until I go back home before I chance another bowl of ramen! read more
