I thought this was place was delicious! Stumbled upon it via Google Maps, but it was a great find. Angie/Maria is great--super helpful in providing recommendations and answering questions. We ordered the steamed BBQ buns...excellent taste, though I wish it had a little more filing. We also got the spicy pork & shrimp wontons and these were incredible. Excellent flavor! Lastly we got the orange chicken, and it was another hit. My fiance and I ordered these 3 things to share, and ultimately we had leftovers so they're definitely generous portions. I can't leave without talking about the Peach Blossom! If you love a fun, sweet tasty drink, definitely order this! I could have had a few of these, but also would have been bad news bears read more

Food was very good. The dumpling sampler was excellent. A two rating because the service is absolutely atrocious. Went there with my wife on a Saturday around 4. We were seated in dinning area but the bartender was our waitress. Took at least 10 minutes to get service. Ordered two drinks margarita and sangria. My margarita came out (which was awful) the sangria took another 5 minutes we actually had to go ask about it. Shift change we got another waitress/bartneder. She was apologetic and was responsive at first....we got done our meal she never came back to our table. I had to go up to the bar and ask to get our check. This place if they want to pull in other than college kids needs a staff check. read more

On today's episode of eating my way through restaurants around the University of Delaware (while taking my college senior daughter to lunch), we landed at The Ugly Dumpling. We kicked things off with edamame - simple and exactly what you'd expect (hard to mess that up). From there, we shared the chicken soup dumplings, which were loaded with broth and seasoned chicken. I always wonder how they manage to make those, but that's a mystery for another day. The vegetable spring rolls came out hot and crispy. They could've used more filling, but the thin wrapper made them extra crunchy, which I liked. Surprisingly, the star of the show wasn't the dumplings - it was the fried rice. Something about it just kept me going back for more. I'm usually not big on rice, but even my daughter said it was, in her words, "obnoxiously good." We also tried bubble tea (my daughter ordered it for me), and it was my first time having one with a fruity flavor inside the boba - "slamming" is the only way to describe it. Service-wise, the staff and hostess were polite and attentive throughout. Overall, I'd give The Ugly Dumpling a strong 4 out of 5. FYI - when you hit the bathroom, make sure you grab the hand soap and not the mouthwash like I did. When you go, you'll see what I mean, lol. read more

My friends and I went to Ugly Dumpling to celebrate my early birthday :) We had Luke as our server, and he was hilarious and very helpful when we were debating our dishes (confirmed the soy garlic wings I wanted to get would be amazing and they were!). My two friends are vegan and they were happy to try out the vegan options (dumplings, wonton soup and green beans. They enjoyed all their dishes. Me and my other friend (non-vegans) ordered the soy garlic wings (best wings I've had in a long time!) which were perfectly crispy with a delicious sauce that I drizzled over my fried rice later. We also got the 6 soup dumpling special that was fun (just wish there was more broth in the soup dumplings for some of them but all have very good flavor). Then we also got the shrimp fried rice which was really good as well. We also got an assortment of drinks which were strong and delicious. I got the Lychee Berry Margarita which was refreshing. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated and clean. Glad I was able to try this place finally! 5/5 stars and I'll be back to try other dishes. read more

Stopped at Ugly Dumpling on way back home to CT from Key West and really enjoyed it. The ambiance is casual Asian dumpling house like many that I have visited on my travels. Servers were very friendly and helpful. I started with a hot and sour soup, then had 6 pork, shrimp & spinach soup dumplings and 6 Szechuan soup dumplings. Soup had a nice rich flavor. Dumplings were not the prettiest I've had, but the flavor was very good. I ended the meal with an order of steamed BBQ pork buns. They were ok, but they need to increase the amount of pork in the bun. Seemed more like frozen buns than in-house. Overall, I enjoyed the meal and would love to have one of these restaurants in CT. Cheers! read more

Most amazing food and service today at Ugly Dumpling in Newark, Delaware. This restaurant opened on the main ave of campus town of The University of Delaware about 2 months ago according to my brother who lives in the area. Our server told us they serve "Shanghai style" meaning all the food at once, so we decided to order a bunch and share. For our drinks, my brother, sister in law and husband ordered drinks but I opted for an iced green tea with passion fruit flavor and boba - SO GOOD! It was a huge drink with like 1/3 of it filled with boba. To eat, we have the dumpling sampler, edamame, bbq pork bao buns and two types of noodles - one being green tea noodles with a peanut sauce. I cannot say enough good things about ALL of the food. This place was a home run in my book! The service was quick, the food was top notch and the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. Thank you for a wonderful dinner! We will be back! O read more

Pretty good... but wanted a little more. A few items were overly salty. Wanted more flavor and less salty. Everything was decent just nothing overly impressed us. We got our order to go but the restaurant was hopping and the staff was friendly. It's fun you can see into the kitchen. Might try to eat in next time. read more

Delicious and has a large variety of food. Friendly, attentive service. Ambiance is busy, but the place is large. Nice booths so it feels a little more private. Also, open table sections, too. read more

I heard about Ugly Dumpling from a foodie friend of mine and had to check it out. Newark Main Street has a fairly diverse culinary landscape (though it needs a Korean restaurant) and Ugly Dumpling adds to the diversity. I've had soup dumplings from Philly and New York, so I have a pretty decent foundation of good soup dumpling. These are very good. You can see them making the dumplings in a 'lab' style room, I guess to show that they are made fresh daily. We arrived on a Saturday at 5:30. There were people waiting, but we were seated right away. The menu looks budget friendly. From my recollection, the Pork & Truffle Dumplings, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, and Pork Chop Fried Rice are the most expensive items on the menu ($14). Most dishes are $10-$12. We were here for the soup dumplings, so we ordered two Ugly Dumpling samplers, two Pork Dumplings, a Spicy Pork & Shrimp Wontons, String Beans w. Garlic Sauce, Vegetable Stir Fry Noodles, and a Hot & Sour Soup. Hot & Sour Soup-huge bowl of soup. Not the best I've had but I liked that it was shareable. A little chili oil and it was a good start. Wontons-another shareable appetizer. They went quickly. String Beans-I liked the crunch. My wife thought it was too salty. Stir Fry Noodles-too wet. Flavor was good for me. Again, my wife thought it was too salty. Dumplings-we ordered three orders of dumplings. Each one was good, though I've very content with the Pork Dumpling. Not super filling, so we ordered one more. When that one came out, we ate them freshly steamed, which was so much better! It may not be super efficient, but I'd order them one at a time, so the dumplings don't sit around too long. Careful, of course; the soup in the dumplings are hot. If you don't know how to eat soup dumplings, ask your server. Total bill-$76. My foodie friend said that the price will "sneak up on you." He was right. For a family of four (two pre-teen boys), that's a little high, and I and my wife could have eaten more. We enjoyed the eating experience, but will be better prepared for our next visit. Paying for parking...meh. read more

Was in the area and decided to give this place a try. First impression was that the dining area was beautifully decorated. Very clean. Tried the wings , fried chicken dumplings, green beans, and the pork spinach dumplings. Everything was excellent. All that I ate were items recommended by my server Lauren, and the kid was on point with every recommendation. Will definitely return read more

Brand new place. There's going to be long waits for a long time, because it's amazing! We put our name down for a later time in evening and came back. Didn't have to wait very long once we returned. As of now, they don't have their liquor license yet. There is a bar. There are drinks on the menu..but they aren't there yet. Its quite nice inside, light wood throughout and the place is tremendous! They clearly don't have enough staff yet to fill the place because the entire rear of restaurant was empty. They just opened in past week. AI google description is : Ugly Dumpling is a restaurant chain specializing in modern, Shanghai-inspired Chinese cuisine, with a focus on dumplings and other street food dishes. known for their house-made dumplings, diverse menu featuring noodle dishes & modern twists on classic Chinese flavors. The restaurant's atmosphere is described as casual and contemporary. Yeah, this! Exactly! Extensive menu with so many great choices, it's difficult to decide. So we had a little of everything, and EVERYTHING was delicious! Apps: crab rangoon, cucumber salad and edamame. Dinner we had a variety of soup dumplings, noodles and fried rices. Chicken, shrimp, pork..little bit of each. We all tried each other's dishes and we loved them all. Too full for dessert. This place is a gem. Worth the wait! Definitely will be back! read more

Outstanding brand new restaurant. Fantastic service, amazing food, beautiful location, at a very reasonable price. The food came out very quickly as soon as each item was done, so that it came out as fresh as possible. We got Crab Ragoons as an appetizer and they were absolutely incredible! We also got the spicy Chicken Wontons, and Ugly Dumpling Xia Long Boa Sampler. The sampler was a great place to start. We also got the lemonade which was exceptionally good. There are lots of things on the menu and we are eager to try some different items very soon. They even had complimentary mouthwash in the bathroom. Absolutely nothing negative to say about our dining experience. read more

I would come back for happy hour prices, but was SO bummed with how the orange chicken came out. Every bite we took we were asking ourselves if it was the right dish and what was wrong with it. The only flavor was burnt garlic. Had a few bites and tossed. Just a big bummer! read more

From the moment we walked into this spotless restaurant until the moment we left, our evening was perfect. Ugly Dumpling is spacious and bright with authentic decor and we were greeted and seated immediately. Our waitress was delightful and very knowledgeable about the menu, offering suggestions and insight on all of the items available. Our Chicken Soup Dumplings, Pork Chop Fried Rice and Orange Chicken with White Rice soon arrived and we have never enjoyed Chinese Food MORE! The Fried Pork Chop and Orange Chicken were light, flavorful and SO tender. The Fried Rice was fluffy and moist with perfect flavoring and no greasy residue. The Chicken Soup Dumplings were large, fluffy and tender with a burst of soup filling with each bite. We ended with the Chocolate Cookie Lava with Ice Cream, which was decadent. We will be back very soon! read more

I'm giving the review a 3 out of 5 because most of the menu wasn't available; which isn't a surprise for a recently opened restaurant. I ordered the wings, shrimp, pork and spinach soup dumplings and boba! It was all very good. Our server Deuce was funny and knowledgeable. He helped us make decisions regarding our order due to the limited options. The space is nice and different - you can actually see them preparing the dumplings as you walk to your seat. read more

Newark, especially Mean Street is really surprising. There is a lot of diverse food. And most of it is really good. This new spot fits in nicely. Really great soup dumplings and other dumplings. Nice vegetable dishes, good boba.. Really nice atmosphere and terrific service. You can even watch the kitchen make dumplings. This is apparently a chain, but who cares...they make great food. I highly recommend trying the spicy Szechuan Pork Soup Dumplings. That was the standout dish. That and the Spicy Cucumbers. read more

Brand spanking new!!! Main Street has a new hot spot that lives up to the hype. Spacious, inviting, with a pleasant decor Ugly Dumpling was a pleasure. Even with the crowds of people the staff held up well. Still working out the kinks with delivering the orders but not terrible. Hubby and I took two seats at the bar because it was a 40 minute wait for a table. Our bartender was very friendly and helpful. We tried a few things off the menu. Pork Dumplings, Orange Chicken, Spicy Pork and Shrimp Wontons and finally the Shrimp Fried Rice. All was yummy. The shrimp wontons were the best in my opinion- so light yet tasty with a bit of kick. The orange chicken was different than I've had before- small bites of chicken with a yummy orange sauce. All in all we enjoyed our visit very much and plan to go back!!! read more

The food was really good and it stuffs you right away, so don't get too much. Our waiter was on his third day ever and he did really well, I just could catch his name. The bamboo decor is really nice and inviting. The only bad thing was the boba, which could use a bit more syrup. Other than that, great underrated place and would come again. read more

I sat at the bar at lunchtime. Ugly Dumpling employees were all around some behind the bar 3 feet away from me. No one welcomed me or offered a menu. No one offered a drink or asked if I would like something to eat or drink. No one even smiled at me or said hello. I was apparently invisible to the employees. It is apparent that hospitality or customer service is a low priority. I left after 10 minutes without anyone saying a word to me. A most appalling experience. read more

I had an amazing experience at Ugly Dumpling, and a huge part of that was thanks to our server, Melisa. bland food , dumpling under cooked (chewy , spit it out) , couldn't taste much difference in the dumpling sampler, strange taste in spring roll and very thick coating.
