My friends and I went to Ugly Dumpling to celebrate my early birthday :) We had Luke as our server, and he was hilarious and very helpful when we were debating our dishes (confirmed the soy garlic wings I wanted to get would be amazing and they were!). My two friends are vegan and they were happy to try out the vegan options (dumplings, wonton soup and green beans. They enjoyed all their dishes. Me and my other friend (non-vegans) ordered the soy garlic wings (best wings I've had in a long time!) which were perfectly crispy with a delicious sauce that I drizzled over my fried rice later. We also got the 6 soup dumpling special that was fun (just wish there was more broth in the soup dumplings for some of them but all have very good flavor). Then we also got the shrimp fried rice which was really good as well. We also got an assortment of drinks which were strong and delicious. I got the Lychee Berry Margarita which was refreshing. The restaurant is also beautifully decorated and clean. Glad I was able to try this place finally! 5/5 stars and I'll be back to try other dishes.

Most amazing food and service today at Ugly Dumpling in Newark, Delaware. This restaurant opened on the main ave of campus town of The University of Delaware about 2 months ago according to my brother who lives in the area. Our server told us they serve "Shanghai style" meaning all the food at once, so we decided to order a bunch and share. For our drinks, my brother, sister in law and husband ordered drinks but I opted for an iced green tea with passion fruit flavor and boba - SO GOOD! It was a huge drink with like 1/3 of it filled with boba. To eat, we have the dumpling sampler, edamame, bbq pork bao buns and two types of noodles - one being green tea noodles with a peanut sauce. I cannot say enough good things about ALL of the food. This place was a home run in my book! The service was quick, the food was top notch and the decor and atmosphere of the restaurant was amazing. Thank you for a wonderful dinner! We will be back! O

Delicious and has a large variety of food. Friendly, attentive service. Ambiance is busy, but the place is large. Nice booths so it feels a little more private. Also, open table sections, too.

I heard about Ugly Dumpling from a foodie friend of mine and had to check it out. Newark Main Street has a fairly diverse culinary landscape (though it needs a Korean restaurant) and Ugly Dumpling adds to the diversity. I've had soup dumplings from Philly and New York, so I have a pretty decent foundation of good soup dumpling. These are very good. You can see them making the dumplings in a 'lab' style room, I guess to show that they are made fresh daily. We arrived on a Saturday at 5:30. There were people waiting, but we were seated right away. The menu looks budget friendly. From my recollection, the Pork & Truffle Dumplings, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, and Pork Chop Fried Rice are the most expensive items on the menu ($14). Most dishes are $10-$12. We were here for the soup dumplings, so we ordered two Ugly Dumpling samplers, two Pork Dumplings, a Spicy Pork & Shrimp Wontons, String Beans w. Garlic Sauce, Vegetable Stir Fry Noodles, and a Hot & Sour Soup. Hot & Sour Soup-huge bowl of soup. Not the best I've had but I liked that it was shareable. A little chili oil and it was a good start. Wontons-another shareable appetizer. They went quickly. String Beans-I liked the crunch. My wife thought it was too salty. Stir Fry Noodles-too wet. Flavor was good for me. Again, my wife thought it was too salty. Dumplings-we ordered three orders of dumplings. Each one was good, though I've very content with the Pork Dumpling. Not super filling, so we ordered one more. When that one came out, we ate them freshly steamed, which was so much better! It may not be super efficient, but I'd order them one at a time, so the dumplings don't sit around too long. Careful, of course; the soup in the dumplings are hot. If you don't know how to eat soup dumplings, ask your server. Total bill-$76. My foodie friend said that the price will "sneak up on you." He was right. For a family of four (two pre-teen boys), that's a little high, and I and my wife could have eaten more. We enjoyed the eating experience, but will be better prepared for our next visit. Paying for parking...meh.

Was in the area and decided to give this place a try. First impression was that the dining area was beautifully decorated. Very clean. Tried the wings , fried chicken dumplings, green beans, and the pork spinach dumplings. Everything was excellent. All that I ate were items recommended by my server Lauren, and the kid was on point with every recommendation. Will definitely return

I would come back for happy hour prices, but was SO bummed with how the orange chicken came out. Every bite we took we were asking ourselves if it was the right dish and what was wrong with it. The only flavor was burnt garlic. Had a few bites and tossed. Just a big bummer!

Outstanding brand new restaurant. Fantastic service, amazing food, beautiful location, at a very reasonable price. The food came out very quickly as soon as each item was done, so that it came out as fresh as possible. We got Crab Ragoons as an appetizer and they were absolutely incredible! We also got the spicy Chicken Wontons, and Ugly Dumpling Xia Long Boa Sampler. The sampler was a great place to start. We also got the lemonade which was exceptionally good. There are lots of things on the menu and we are eager to try some different items very soon. They even had complimentary mouthwash in the bathroom. Absolutely nothing negative to say about our dining experience.

This is absolutely our new favorite restaurant in Newark! Will you order six different dishes, each spectacular with no flaws. I would have to recommend the sampler dumplings. Be careful on the spicy one.

Pork & Shrimp Wonton Soup (8) Best thing that I tasted that evening!! Wonton were so flavorful!!

I've been wanting to try this restaurant for a while as I had read reviews saying food was…read moreauthentic. I came in very hungry and ordered the following: wontons in chili oil, Dan Dan noodles, Sichuan spicy tofu. I've had all these dishes at other restaurants before and make the first 2 routinely at home. 1. Dan Dan noodles: portion was huge. It was topped with a creamy very garlicky sauce, including rough chopped fresh garlic ( warmed through but still had some crunch/bite to it). OMG so delicious. Not meat forward (if there was even any meat, I think it was maybe finely sliced fungus instead, it worked perfectly in any case). 2. Wontons in chili oil: I was expecting a bit more flavor to the sauce, instead it was literally just chili oil and seemed kind of diluted and bland even. I added some pieces of garlic from my Dan Dan noodles and let that sit with some dark soy sauce the waitress brought and that did the trick. 3. Sichuan spicy tofu, recommended by the host: came with chicken, fish or beef, I chose chicken. This was massive and I have leftovers I'm looking forward to eating later. Very flavorful with silky tofu. I didn't really enjoy the texture of the chicken though and would have preferred it minced or lower chicken:tofu ratio or with pork. It looks like they have a smaller mapo tofu dish in a different part of the menu without the added meat and I might try that next time. The wild part was the intensity of the Szechuan peppercorn. I routinely crush it freshly at home and eat dishes containing it when out but have never experienced such an intense tingling effect. It felt like my lips and tongue were vibrating and then my water tasted like it had lemon juice squeezed in it. Not sure if it is a different kind than the red one I have at home, or if it is just THAT fresh, but wow. All in all, very enjoyable meal and service. I will for sure be back for the Dan Dan noodles but not if planning to socialize much after given how intensely garlicky they were. Looking forward to trying other dishes on the menu! A suggestion for the menu: I really like the large glossy pictures of each item but it ends up being a lot of pages to turn back and forth through to make a selection, so it would be nice to include just a plain typed list to glance at as well, like a table of contents.

Chef Tan is one of the better Chinese places in the Newark area. I really don't think authenticity…read morematters a great deal, but Chef Tan is about a 7.5 on a 1-10 point scale measuring authenticity (with Golden Wok Mushu Pork being a one and Richmond Vancouver Chinese stores being a ten), though obviously some dishes are more or less than others The place is relatively spacious, and you can totally have a large party come here. It's also regularly open on typical US holidays, such as Christmas or Thanksgiving, so if you need somewhere to go when everything else is closed, you can really rely on this place. Some things that I think are pretty good here: the vegetable options (though somewhat expensive), the kung pao chicken, the eggplant, the lamb options (including the sliced version, as well as the cumin one where you can add lamb as your option).
