They are a very consistent and fair credit union that is well organized. They have great underwriters that work with you and tellers are eager to assist. All-in-all a very solid credit union. These guys are miracle workers. After years of being treated like a peasant or pond scum by every other bank it's so nice to come into a place and know your representative, and be treated like a person, and to know on top of that that they are not using your money for evil. Matt bacon is only interestedb in his bonuses and commissions he recieves. He and Guadalupe Moreno took advantage of my mother and her inability of comprehending the english language. She wanted to invest her money and she, not fully understanding english trusted Guadalupe's translation. He insisted that her money would NOT fluctuate if she invested in the US Treasury stock. He said and i quote! "you have nothing to worry about your 90k will always be there for you to withdraw at anytime." Long story she lost 1k within the first quarter and when she came to the bank, heads were ducked. She withdrew everything she had left and Matt tried to convince her once again to leave her money there! No concern, no empathy. A life's savings and this is how they serve you!? This is disgusting! I've been a member of UFCU for 18 years and have never had any problems with them. In fact I've always had a pleasant experience whenever I went in for a loan or to inquire about my account. I called them today because my Visa/Check card was being declined and I wasn't able to withdraw money from an ATM. Steven checked my account and told me they had cancelled the card due to fraud. Someone in Hollywood, FL was charging items at Walgreen's. I forgot to change my phone number on my account since I no longer have a land line so they were unable to get a hold of me to verify the charges. I was very happy they were watching out for me. It's service like this that will keep me as a customer for the next 18+ years! read more

This credit union seems on its way down/out. Used to be you could easily talk to people there and now everything is behind a wall and you speak to tellers through a telephone and video screen. Also, no more in person face to face loans - you mail everything in and pray they get it and process it. I miss the face time and personal touch. Still better than those awful corporate banks... but heading that direction. read more

The Guadalupe folks are nice. I have 2 kids in college and don't have a large salary in my social services job. I occasionally have to juggle things and be late on bills. They shut down my account and online access which just compounds the problem. Don't deal with them unless you make good $$$ and don't have to worry about being late occasionally. read more

Gets 2 stars just because it is a Credit Union. I join the Galveston Branch in 1993 (20 years), bought my House with UFCU, and I have a real good credit score. I weather with UFCU many changes. Some are difficult to endure for example they now have a contractor to phone you after hours. UFCU share with them all your personal information!. 2. I try to get a used car loan, but they are not equipped to deal with transactions that are not with a dealer, they will not do title work (even for a fee). 3. There is a diversity of people handling your loan and no internal communication. So after dealing with 3 loan officers, called to see if they received my signed documents, to find out that a new loan officer had to get approval from the loan underwriter again (done once before), and the papers will have to be approved. Approved for the second time, the next call was supposed to be house keeping (payments dates, etc). The next call informed that I did not have a loan, unless title work is re-done and I have to sign all loan paperwork one more time. Asked to talk to a manager, and she just spelled it for me in the polite-rude manner that an automatized answering system can convey. In short, I had a loan, then I did not, then I did, then I did not... here I stopped it. I declined to sign anything else... and now they are late in returning my Title. This is a car I purchased for my 16 years old Kid because I like to make her happy, and it is something I can definitely afford. A car loan was a sound decision because is the least expensive financing. But it did not work I am leaving just a savings account at UFCU, but not doing any more business there (checking, credit cards, etc), because what if I really needed them?, what if I was in a financial constrain? and they proceed the same way they did with this simple used car loan? Those are just too many questions, there is no way to make this wrong right, nothing they can do, because if not a mistake, is lack of organization, work flow and interest on serving the members. Note that if they had good motivation for serving the members, this last point could compensate for any organizational failure... but it just does not. read more

If you're thinking of switching, don't, there are far better options. As a member of a credit union in the UFCU shared branching network, I thought I would make the switch to UFCU. I wanted to use a local credit union, and they have an office right down the street. Unfortunately, over the course of the three days I tried to get this done, I was stymied by horrible customer service so badly that I eventually had to give up. On the first day, I created and funded a new account through UFCU's automated, online account creation system. Very handy, but I had to enter the office to get my debit card. On my first attempt, no one was available to speak with me after wandering around the branch location for at least ten minutes as a receptionist's desk sat unmanned. I had no idea what to do, so I left. "Whatever," I said, "They're probably just busy." And, to their credit, they were. Day 2: Identical repeat of Day 1. I came in, no one was manning the front desk, no one was available to speak with me, staff members averted their eyes to avoid taking responsibility for helping me as I walked around looking for some one to speak with. Day 3, Today: This time, a receptionist was finally manning the front desk. She was helping another customer, but at least I now know they pay some one to be there at least some of the time. So I waited to speak to her, but after helping her customer she just runs off behind an Employee's Only door without saying a word. After her extended absence, I noticed one of the account managers sitting with no one at his desk, so I slid over to ask what I needed to do. At this point, bear in mind, I had not yet made human contact with any employees at the branch, after three attempts! Unfortunately, the only response I got from this incredibly-bearded individual was to go "check in" so that I can be in the "line" to see him (note: there is no line). So I did this, and, happily, as I approached the check-in counter, the receptionist magically reappeared to aid me with the check-in process. After this was done, I sat on a bench no more than 2 feet away from her for 5 minutes, with no other customers around, until she called my name to help me. I felt like one of the workers in 1983. When, at long last, I was finally put face-to-face with another person at this branch, I don't think anyone would be surprised to learn that I was starting to change my mind about switching to UFCU. After the receptionist explained how their meat grinder banking system works (my words, not her's), I told her I'd prefer to just use them as a shared branching center, and keep my account at TruWest. So she put me BACK IN the waiting queue so that I could talk to some one else about closing the account! So I went to go wait again, and after another short while sitting about two feet away from this woman, she calls my name again to begin the account closure process. When asked why I wanted to close the account, I simply said I was dissatisfied with the services offered. If all this annoyance wasn't enough, the receptionist berated me for not "choosing local" when I made this request! Ultimately, I had to take a slip to a Video Teller station, to get some lady in a box to stamp some paperwork and give me my money back (sans the $1 membership fee). I've lived in over 10 states and held multiple banking accounts in all of them. I presently have 3 banking accounts spread across as many states, and I've had experience with at least 50 individual banking branches. I've never been compelled to get on the internet and complain about ANYTHING before, let alone a banking branch. Taking that into account, I submit the following warning: This is unquestionably the worst credit union I have ever set foot in. ****** Also, to avoid getting that nice woman "written up" (as I'm sure such an organization would enjoy thoroughly), I wanted to say that the receptionist, outside of the one sarcastic comment, was actually quite polite and helpful. I think she was strictly a victim of poor management and insane meat-grinder policies. Honestly, why put some one back in a "line" just because they change what they want to do, when there are no other customers around, and the same lady winds up servicing them for both purposes? They may as well have put a bucket on my head and told me to spin in circles for 5 minutes! No sensible human being would solve a problem that way, and this woman was quite intelligent and personable. read more

First off, I've been with UFCU for 9 years. I've had credit cards, auto loans, savings, checking and currently an IRA with them. I've always preferred to 'bank' with credit unions because they're seemingly not salivating at the thought of screwing you over to make money, I'm looking at you Chase. That said, in the last 6 months I've had some TERRIBLE experiences at this branch, which bums me out because it's closest to me. I've had holds placed on checks without being notified. I've had tellers attempt to place holds on my PAYCHECK for no reason other than it not being drawn on their bank. Listen, I've worked for banks in the past, I know and understand the criteria for placing holds. I was/haven't been in any of the areas of criteria needed for such. What's worse? Going inside and speaking to a representative who basically just shrugged it off and acted like my complaints weren't valid and didn't offer any type of sympathy/empathy towards me whatsoever. I was tempted to close every account I have with them that day. Oh yeah! I asked to speak to a manager! They said "We currently don't have a manager here." AWESOME. Thankfully, I cooled off and went to another branch and spoke to a representative there. Before even explaining my situation, I had him pull up my account and look into my history. I knew what questions to ask and the criteria to look at in regards to holding checks. He apologized profusely and assured it wouldn't happen again. My advice? Avoid this location like the plague unless you have a transaction that doesn't include possible denial. read more

Great bank! That is, as long as you are residing in Austin and able to go in and talk about your situation with bankers. If you need to make any arrangements by e-mail, or dare I say it, phone, you are best served elsewhere. Like the situation I am going through presently where I have moved to Dallas and MUST deal with the attrocious customer service that exists outside the friendly tellers and staff at the branches. The only conclusion I can draw from my horrible experiences with customer service and any and all representatives I deal with over the phone or via email is met with unfriendly, uncaring and above all incompetent responses from those I must deal with. Even reaching someone in Collections is near impossible as the wait times are bordering on ridiculous (45 minutes) plus it helps no one ever answers their direct line, even when they call and leave their extension. Either they must have very amateur staff/management or do not pay well beyond the positions in the actual branches themselves, is just a couple educated guesses on my part. Either way I am taking my business to USAA including loan and other business and would advise others to stay away as these bad practices are ruining what used to be a very reputable financial organization. read more

I am so sad that Yelp doesn't not offer an option for negative stars. Please note that the only reason there is one star here is because I am forced to leave at least one star. Stars? STARS? How about more like BLACK HOLE. I have been a member for more than fourteen years. UFCU used to be decent. No more. My debit card has been hacked around four times in the past year. The other day the mobile system kicked back a check I deposited saying it had the wrong name on it. I have two names. My account notes this. I have deposited literally THOUSANDS of checks under the name that was on the check they bounced back instead of depositing. I have deposited literally HUNDREDS of checks using that name with the mobile app. I call for help and I get told nope, sorry that's just the way it goes. When I opened a business account last year they put the wrong EIN on the account. When my card got hacked most recently I called to order another one. It never came. I called a couple of weeks later to ask where it was. The customer service rep said, I shit you not, "Oh. Looks like the last rep dropped the ball." DROPPED THE BALL? That's the best he could do? I have deposited hundreds of thousands of dollars over the years and THEY DROPPED THE BALL? I don't think they ever picked the ball up once they dropped it with those stupid fucking TV screen teller systems they installed. I am so sick of the customer disservice, which grows worse by the hour. I just spent hours today switching to RBFCU and linking all of my online accounts to my new credit union. It is such a pain in the ass to do that but a) I was having to re-set my accounts all the time due to my debit card getting constantly hacked and b) my misery at this tedious process was tremendously mitigated by the knowledge that soon, oh so soon, I will never, ever, EVER again have to deal with this idiot institution. You would be far better off storing your money in mason jars in the backyard. DO NOT-- I REPEAT DO NOT give this place your business. THEY SUCK. read more

These people are in competition with United Airlines and Time-Warner Cable to see who can have the worst customer service. There is absolutely no difference between trying to get the attention of a competent person at UFCU and standing in line at the "Customer Service" line at DFW for 10 hours in order to get a phony voucher. If they make a simple arithmetic mistake in your account, and you complain, they will respond with a canned "explanation" of the debit or credit, which will treat you like a 2-year-old and not explain anything and, most certainly, won't correct the error. You can be polite. That won't work. You can be civil. That won't work. You be firm and professional. That won't work. You can be sharp and aggressive. That won't work. You can throw a screaming temper tantrum, and, now that you've found their level of competence and maturity, you'll at least get a response. It won't be a helpful response, but their huffy, self-righteous attitude is at least something. Loan officers: They don't have any. If you go in to talk to a loan officer, that person won't know anything about loans. Well, maybe if it's complete boiler-plate. But if you have any question, no matter how trivial, he'll have to make a phone call to get the answer, IF person he calls is actually in the office, and there's only a 10% chance of that. No lie, I've had this happen 3 times. I make the effort to go to the branch to talk to a loan officer and the only thing this "expert" can do is write down my questions and have someone contact me later. And be careful and don't piss them off. The first time I was pushing a complaint through their system, and was at the "sharp and aggressive" stage, some random person called my wife and screamed and cussed at her for "blaming him" for the trouble. Point of fact, we didn't know this guy from Adam. An e-mail sent to a generic address by ME got forwarded to him to take care of. This stupid numbnutz decided that I was somehow "blaming him" personally and, not being man enough to talk to me, calls my wife and throws a childish temper tantrum. You wonder why they hide behind TV cameras? Do not do business here. Don't even do business with another business withing 6 blocks. Don't do business with anyone with the letter U or F or C or another U in their name. You do not want these boobs taking care of your money or managing your loan. The Guadalupe location next to the Triangle is the dirtiest bank I have ever been in! They use a prison style booth with video monitor, camera and pick-up-the-phone communication as their teller booths. The booth has graffiti on all the soft wood surfaces that they haven't covered with plastic and it's dirty. Seriously, every little corner is caked with grime and dirt. I don't want their tellers to get shot but just hire off-duty police officer if your bank is that much of a target. Contrast that with any other bank in Austin and you get face-to-face contact in a place that looks like its a model house with clean carpets, granite, and not a spec of dirt. read more

I have been a member for 10 years. It is only for convenience sake that I've maintained this account. I refuse to do business with banks. However, the customer service is sorely lacking. In 10 years only one employee in the branch knows my name. Be prepared to wait at least 10 to 15 minutes to do any transaction inside the branch with a teller. Forget the drive thru, you could order a pizza while waiting! When I voice my concerns I am met with polite lip service but no resolve. The "so what" service Austin is famous for just doesn't do it for me. If you've got plenty of time on your hands and enjoy waiting...this is your place. read more

I very recently opened my account at this location. I was made every promise in the world that they would be better than my last bank. Maybe it's just this location, I don't know, I've jist had my funds held at a complete surprise to me for what is "policy" to them. Policies should be made clear to account holders, but apparently that isn't priority. I've now had three people tell me without any concerns for my, their customers, well being to not pay my rent because that's their only answer to my funds being held when they were never held before. Let's make this better and point out that their tellers are behind a thin wall. In order to communicate with them you must pick up a sticky phone only to put it down and hear them mocking their customers or telling severely inappropriate stories through the panels. If you enjoy the prison experience this may be the branch for you. Add insult to injury and layer on their online banking never working. Ever. As in I've set this up several times. Ask to fix this and they don't care. Let's talk about my available funds like I don't know instead. To top it all off, I've had to prove everything their bankers have promised me in writing in order to have the bank itself honor it. If you're trying to achieve independence after a divorce or break up go elsewhere. If you do decide to come here get everything in writing and maybe keep a savings account somewhere else. I need to give a shout out to my bank, UFCU. I didn't keep up with moving my money around properly last week and incurred a substantial amount of 'courtesy fees', which I had never seen before. Apparently, I was late on paying $4.83 balance on a loan account, and this stopped my overdraft protection. But a visit to the bank and a phone call later, they reversed everything(over $300!). I bought two computers through UFCU over several years I was working for the university and made all my payments on schedule. Then I got married and quit working. With income higher than ever I applied for a third computer loan. It was refused b/c I wasn't working full time. It didn't matter that I was at last financially secure. Then they remodeled the Guadalupe branch to feel like a prison visit with clients and clerks separated by glass and that made me uneasy. Still I foolishly took my extra cash to their assets management department. News flash: they don't do it themselves but get something called CUSO to do it. CUSO charged me $35 per year per account to "manage" them which seemed to consist of withdrawing the annual fees if I didn't pay them. When I closed out the accounts, they charged me $75 per account in addition to helping themselves to the fees for the coming year. I moved my assets to another credit union that doesn't keep its reps behind glass and whose wealth management dept. doesn't charge extra fees. read more

If you are considering using UFCU, ask yourself, "Why?" Perhaps, like me, you thought that a credit union might be a little bit friendlier and more understanding than a bank. I was satisfied with UFCU until someone convinced me to get an additional bank account at a traditional bank (Bank of America). I don't want to say anything bad about BOA, because its employees have been ridiculously nice to me. However, I know its reputation is less than sterling. But it's SO MUCH better than UFCU. I never have to go into a BOA, I just go to the ATM whenever I need to deposit money. It's almost always immediately available. This gave me a false sense of security about using UFCU's ATMs. Imagine my surprise when I discovered that I check I deposited in a UFCU ATM on the 22nd wouldn't clear until the 27th! And this was a UFCU check! Apparently this is UFCU's standard practice, and its employees see no reason to apologize for it. Its reps even tried to convince me that this is standard banking practice. It's not, and no one should have to put up with it. So inconvenient and unhelpful! As soon as UFCU can find the time in its busy schedule to clear my check, I'm taking my money and running far away! I keep seeing these little ads: "don't tax my credit union." Why not? I'm really not sure what wonderful service they're providing that entitles them to tax exemption. read more

After banking here for over 10 years, financing auto loans, and enduring one error after the other by the tellers at the Guadalupe location, I have reached my limit! FIRST, this is the most incompetent bank I have ever dealt with. At the drive up, they have given me other members' deposit slips (with all their details on it), deposited my payroll check into someone else's account (lucky that I caught it before driving away), received erroneous advice from their notary, waited forever at the drive up because the service is the slowest, and on and on. Second: after depositing the SAME payroll check for over 14 years, the amateurs at this branch have now started placing a "HOLD" on my payroll checks. Of course I went inside the bank, and waited over 45 minutes to discuss this with their banker who apologized profusely and said she would make sure it didn't happen again.(Surprise surprise, it happened again!) I asked the drive up manager to explain why this hold is being applied and he said it was the policy. When did this policy start? No answer to that except muttering something about all the "fraud" that is occurring. You would think they know you are not a risk after 14 years. No one could answer this question so I am left to wonder if the bank is holding on to my money because UFCU is having its own financial troubles....? Bottom line: Do not bank here or if you do you never use this location. I think they must do all their training out of this location, the tellers are slow and make lots of mistake and no one knows what is going on. And, after all these years, I will be taking my money elsewhere. read more
