I have now been to Udon twice. I was very glad when it opened as it is very convenient. I was not impressed on my first trip, however, I put it down to poor choice on my part and decided to give the Udon Cafe another go. Unfortunately it was very disappointing. The food cannot be described as anything above average and generally below par. The great tastes that other asian restaurants managed to pull off are simply not recreated here. One of the worst elements is the cooking oil that is used which clearly makes the food taste both bad and slightly burnt. The other evidence for the poor oil is the awful smell that greets you when you enter the restaurant. I thought I was imagining it first time, but having been back I recognised the smell as burnt and old oil which was reflected in the taste of the food. Other factors that are off-putting include the service which is bad due to a complete lack of training on the part of the management. It was not their fault, when you did get them to come to the table they were as helpful as they could be but the lack of training meant that they really did not enhance the experience. There does appear to be a manager but he spent his whole time sitting at the counter instead of directing or helping his staff. One of the worst aspects of the service was to be told that they did not have ice to put in our tepid drinks. The staff did not seem to comprehend the complete surprise that greeted this news. So in short, this could be a good place but at present it is not, poor service, poor food and a poor attitude. Clean up your act (and your restaurant) and spice up your food and train your staff and I will be back. Until then its off to Wagamama! read more
