The BEST wedding venue we could have ever asked for!…read more We had our wedding April 2024 and was nervous for the weather with the indoor/outdoor venue, but it ended up being perfect. The sun came out just in time for the 4pm cocktail hour and we were able to enjoy being on the grass without it being wet. Our guests kept talking about how amazing the view was - which is exactly why we chose it! This is perfect for if you want a beach wedding, but not directly on the sand. We wanted our guests to be outside for as much as possible to enjoy the La Jolla view, so we had cocktail hour and our buffet table outside. With the help of Personal Touch Dining, we also had bar tables set up outside for guests to still enjoy being outside during the party. Andrew and the rest of the Scripps Seaside Forum team was very easy to work with - always being available over email or text for any random questions I had.

When it came time to arrange for the wedding, we didn't look long, nor did we look far. Our first choice was to get married at UC San Diego. The only question was "how?" As it turned out, the Faculty Club had us covered. They have wedding packages that include the ceremony, cocktail hour/reception, all the food and alcohol your guests care to stomach (choice of open bar or cash bar), setup and teardown of all the tables and chairs, etc. The only major wedding services we had to arrange for separately were the DJ, the photographer, the cake, and the officiant. Selecting the Faculty Club and working with their head of catering, Julia, really took a lot of work off our shoulders and streamlined the process - all the more important because we did the majority of coordination and planning from another state. Ceremony: We opted to have our ceremony under the trellis in the Faculty Club courtyard, giving the wedding a sort of "indoor/outdoor garden party" vibe. It provided an intimate setting for our guests, and there was no such thing as a "bad" seat for the ceremony. However, you can also have the ceremony beneath Sun God - it's cool to have that option. Cocktail Hour: When you select a wedding package, you also set the number and type of hors d'oeuvres available for your guests. Although we were unable to eat the food ourselves (occupied as we were with getting photographed all over the vicinity of the Faculty Club and Muir) our guests reported the food was excellent. There were a lot of options, as well, so we were able to select a variety of foods that fit our budget. The cocktail hour itself took place behind the ceremony area in the courtyard; It was a mild June afternoon so our guests were able to enjoy the fresh air and chat amongst themselves while waiting for dinner to be served. Alcohol: We went with a cash bar option to avoid breaking the bank, but we did provide wine with dinner, as well as beer and sangria. Julia was very accommodating and flexible when it came to arranging for and selecting the alcohol on offer. Dinner: We opted for dinner service rather than a dinner buffet for our 85 or so guests; guests had the choice of three entrees (and a kids' meal option) on their RSVPs. I don't recall the specifics of what we had selected, but there is a wide variety of entrees to suit your guests' tastes; we'd selected a salmon dish (which my wife and I each ate; presented well and tasted great), chicken piccatta, and a vegetarian dish. Everyone enjoyed their dinner, which was served with a choice of wine or sparkling apple cider for toasting. Facility: Another advantage of having the wedding at the Faculty Club was their provision of separate rooms for the bridal party and groomsmen to use in the hour and a half or so leading up to the ceremony. We all had a place to secure our belongings and finish preparing for the night ahead. The facility as a whole was clean and nicely presented (lots of art on the walls in the entry area, signage welcoming guests to the wedding, etc.). Parking in the adjacent lot was convenient as well. Staff: Julia, the head of catering who also acted as coordinator for the ceremony and ran our rehearsal the day prior, deserves special mention - she was extremely helpful, professional, and friendly in every interaction we had with her. She's done a lot of weddings; that level of experience allowed her to provide invaluable advice and help us make decisions about every stage of the wedding. Our wedding would not have gone nearly as well as it did without Julia's help! Temo, the maitre d' who took over the show for Julia once the reception and dinner service got rolling, also deserves a shout out - he did a great job keeping everyone happy in the evening and made sure everything went smoothly. He secured our valuables while we were busy elsewhere and he and the staff consolidated belongings which were left behind for next-day pickup by the bride's parents; he took care of things so we didn't have to. The extremely professional waiters and waitresses were quick, effective, and unobtrusive and helped make the night special. The chef and kitchen staff prepared a large amount of food that both tasted great and was presented beautifully - our guests were impressed, and so were we. Thank you to the entire crew who worked on our wedding! Getting married at UC San Diego was a natural choice for us - and the Faculty Club warrants your consideration if you would like to have your ceremony and subsequent reception on campus.

I have met so many people who forged great relationships when they studied abroad which is what makes I-House so great because you get a chance to really get to know so many different people from so many different cultures. I can honestly say, living at I-House was one of my most memorable experiences at UCSD.

We weren't able to print our tickets early so we went to the counter and that's when it went down hill. The guy that was suppose to be helping us was one of the rudest people I've come across. There was a misunderstanding regarding our tickets and rather than helping and explaining why it may have happened, he chose to stay on the loud speaker belittling us so that everyone could hear. I was so appalled I requested a refund. After walking away I had a few other customers come up to us in shock at how discourteous and unprofessional he was. Which showed me I was right to be displeased. Sadly after this experience I will not be coming back, which saddens me as I'm a huge performing arts fan and had once liked this theater.

Still, we were able to enjoy a decent selection of sea life. Guess my favorite was seeing the Penguins...and my biggest disappointment was the Octopus (who stayed hidden the whole time!). Other interesting sights included the Tiger Fish (or was it the Leopard Fish??), Stingrays and the small Sea Horses. There was also this nice area outside (patio), where it offered incredible views of La Jolla...as well as this cute Shark Selfie Station, and some seating areas to rest. Overall, it was a really nice aquarium...fit for people of all ages (though it was VERY kid-heavy that day we were there!).

If you're visiting from out of town, it's definitely worth pairing with a day exploring La Jolla, but I wouldn't plan on the aquarium being a full-day activity.

We paid $250 per night for the most disappointing stay I have ever had at a hotel/motel. Pulling up to the location, I was GobSmacked to see it was in an industrial park and very close to heavy traffic. It does not seem to be an easy walk to Old Town and I didn't want to cross a busy hwy to get there, so we ended up having to drive. Check in was fine, but when we got to the room I was so surprised to see a cramped, dated, claustrophobic room. The bathroom is tiny, there is no way to unpack luggage due to no drawers, the air conditioning unit barely works and the room always felt muggy when we entered. Their included breakfast was a huge disappointment, as well. There are several items to choose from, but none of them are fresh and they are of low quality. The bagel I made was completely inedible. It tasted like something off the clearance rack at the discount supermarket. They had pastries in cellophane that looked like they came from 7/11. The pool is advertised as "heated," but it was too cold to go in. The towels at the pool are the same chintzy, thin bath towels that are in your room. Again, far below the expectation for the amount we are paying per night. So after being dissatisfied with our situation we went to the front desk to ask for some type of remediation. We asked for a manager, but they refused to call anyone. Instead we were told that since we booked thru hotels.com they would not give us any type of price adjustment. We asked for a room upgrade which they said they could do for one night, but then we would have to go back to the crappy room since they were "sold out" on Saturday night. When I asked what our options were we were told to "Go stay somewhere else." It left SUCH a bad taste in my mouth. What is so frustrating is that, reading thru the negative reviews, the manager of the hotel always responds with "We are so sorry, we want to make it right, please reach out to us" after the fact. Yet, when you try to give them an opportunity to make it right in real time, they are totally disinterested. They talk a good game, but don't really mean it. In retrospect, we should have checked out and gone to a different hotel. The problem with that is its Labor Day weekend and last minute reservations are outrageously expensive, especially if Old Town Inn is refusing to give any price adjustment. I called the front desk again this morning to attempt to speak to a manager, only to be told there was no one around because it was a Holiday Weekend. How do you not have management on site to address customer issues on a busy weekend? It goes without saying that we will never, EVER stay here again and I hope future guests take note of the many downsides to the Old Town Inn. If this hotel charged $100/night I could maybe see the appeal. But at $250/night it is an absolute rip-off.

I sat very close to the stage (almost could touch the musician) and love the wooden seats here. Yes. It can be a bit hard so bring a cushion or they rent them out here. Concessions were reasonably priced and I got a mocktail for $6 vs $17 if having alcohol. They priced things well. Bathrooms were clean and handicap accessibility here, which allowed a guy in a wheelchair to see the show right up front. I am now planning to go to Mali so I can see Vieux Farke Toure play there, he was just phenomenal! Check out the videos I post, you won't be disappointed!

So many seating options from traditional desks and tables to stools, couches, lounge chairs, and more! My favorite thing has to be the huge windows throughout the space. The views are amazing and I loved watching the sunset. Parking can be a smidge tricky. There is paid parking in the garage beneath the building. Otherwise, there are a few street parking options available across the street if you're lucky enough to snag a spot. Can't wait to be back very soon!
