    What a day!

I must've driven by this place 100 times and not realized that this cute little playground was open to the public. The La Jolla Rec center is in the center of downtown La Jolla. It is also close to the ocean so you can make an afternoon of it. They have tennis courts that are open to the public as well connected to the rec center and tennis lessons. There is ample playground equipment for children of all ages. Parents have picnic tables right next to where the kids play to sit on and set up lunch for the hungry babies after they are done playing. There is basketball and a grassy area just outside the fencing to run around in. Don't worry about parking at all... I found a spot right up front across the street near the church. Beautiful place to spend a sunny San Diego afternoon.

Something about being in the atmosphere of wealth in La Jolla is conducive to a sort of internal transformation. A person who leads a comfortable lifestyle in reasonable prosperity, may begin to believe that he is underprivileged, and perhaps feel a slight resentment toward these opulent surroundings. This phenomenon can be used to the advantage of a pickup basketball player. During those times when you've lost your swagger, and all those bullies, egos and trash talk at a typical playground have got you down, there can be no better remedy than a couple games amongst opponents who may possibly be perceived as "softer" than you. The experience can really provide that chip on the shoulder that has been missing from your game. The basketball courts at the La Jolla Recreation Center are therefore worthy of mention. It begins before you even get out of your car. Maneuvering into a parking space between a Bentley and a Maserati, your perspective on life changes: Suppose that you departed from your home in a freshly washed Saturn, still under the manufacturer's warranty. Well, you've now arrived in La Jolla, driving a vehicle that you may simply refer to as your "hooptie" (a large older automobile, often in poor condition). "NO GOLF" is the message of the sign attached to a rugged chain link fence, overlooking the facility. These forbidding words are driven home, so to speak, by the image of a golf ball, overladen in red with the international symbol for "No". If there could be an opposite to a graffiti covered "No Hanging on the Rims" sign, this is it. Golf must be the main game here, most likely followed by tennis, with basketball pretty far down the list - after shuffle board and croquet. There is presumably little risk that the rims here will be bent by ferocious dunking in the absence of a prominent "no dunking" sign. So even if you don't have a lot of experience, you can be pretty bold on these courts. Start working on some of your still-in-development moves: Dribble through your legs, dribble through the defender's legs, work on your off-the-backboard passing. Best of all, there is a very real chance that you will break some rules while playing basketball here. "Pushing" is prohibited, according to the sign posted at center-court, and sportsmanship must be maintained "at ALL Times", so it's not out of the question that a generally law-abiding person, with no criminal record, could get to experience rebellion against oppressive rules from The Man. New experiences like this are invaluable in the formation of the playground basketball player, and hopefully, when it's all over and you climb into your Saturn hooptie, your newly acquired rugged, rebellious edge will carry over to your home court. Just to be safe though, leave the off-the-backboard passing in La Jolla.

:-/ Registering for 5k! Yes, the La Jolla 5K... I wasn't so impressed with this place.... Were there areas to play with your kids? Nothing stood out. And I felt caged in. I guess I better get used to it.. cause I'll be here again next year registering for the same event. 2 Woofs... Definitely experienced better.

    She loves monkey bars.

Like most other public parks in San Diego County, La Jolla Recreation Center is a well placed and thought out space. This is such a great park! The playground is divided between one for the smaller ones, a swing area, and a bigger playground for the big kids. They have monkey bars, climbing walls, tire swings and about every other thing you need to keep a kid busy. They also have a place to play racquetball, baseball/kick ball, tennis, basketball, tetherball and more than enough space to fly a kite! They also have an auditorium and public (clean) bathrooms to use. We feel really safe allowing our daughter to play here. The "big" kids playground has fencing around three sides, giving you a little ease of mind if you are watching them from the outside. We have been to birthday parties held at the park. There is plenty of space to host a whole party. Parking has never really been an issue for us. There is always plenty of parking on either side of the park, even on busy days. Worse case, you have to walk a block. You are going to a park. I would hope this would not be an inconvenience.

The best features about this park is the green grassy lawn on the bluff cliff side with some bench seating that lets you sit and just enjoy the spectacular ocean views, feel the ocean breeze, as if you're watching a movie because it's so picturesque. My pup and I enjoy this little park and have met with other locals who frequent and walk their pooches. On weekends, this area gets crowded. People use this park to have gatherings, picnics and lately professional photo spots. I've seen commercially created staged floral arrangements with a photographer ready to Take your pics for a fee...I've seen these people set their staging on the bluff and on the beach, and it's tacky, it takes away from the natural wonder of the coast and beach view. These stage photo obstructions are attractive nuisances for kids and dogs. I've seen kids and dogs running around these things, and one day, there will be an injury and a lawsuit. The city really need to regulate these commercial profiteers enforce and ticket them. Love this park, but these tacky set ups have got to go! You check your watch and realize that you only have 15 minutes to get to your interview in town. Nearly 10 years later, you've been with your employer for nearly a decade, and Cuvier Park is only minutes away. This beautiful location has become the place that brings you (and your dog) tremendous peace and joy. This petite park is south of some of the more popular areas so it tends not to be as crowded as the children's pool and the cove. (There is a good amount of parking, but keep in mind that it can get crowded on weekends.) From locals exercising to tourists taking photos and smiling to bougie picnic setups on the grass to sniffalot pups enjoying themselves... there's room for all to peacefully enjoy the incredible view at beautiful Cuvier Park.

It is currently undergoing a major construction upgrade, and the construction announcements look very promising. I saw many people playing basketball, racquetball, and working out in this gym. Every time I'm in SD, I always swing by for a memory and dip. This last time was atrocious. The place is FILTHY. The lobby upon entry is not welcoming; the entry desk is full of dust and card readers are broken, etc. The pool itself has more chlorine than I ever remember and was the cloudiest I've ever seen it. The lounge chairs are either missing cushions or have ripped covers. The old skool clock (that comes in handy) has been missing the last two times I was there....but the locker rooms. OMG. The tiled showers are SLIMY, there are hair balls and soap scum in every drain. It's not only a walking hazard but just disgusting. I filled my water bottle at the fountain and the next day it had black dots growing on the sides. This place is infested with bacteria and mold. Aquatic recreation facilities require daily deep sanitizing and cleaning and this facility is not being maintained or managed properly. As a campus that invest millions in educational skyscrapers, the funding seems available for maintaining facilities properly. I hope they can get it together. Not only will I miss visiting this facility but future and past students deserve better.

My daughter is in her second season in the 10U basketball league here. I cannot say enough good…read morethings about the coaches! They really know basketball but are also focused on teaching the kids the fundamentals and endurance training which is great. The first practice was intimidating as the coaches had the kids running laps over and over, and pushing them to try their best, but my daughter stuck with it and now loves it. She's learned a lot about basketball, conditioning and teamwork here. Because we liked the league so much, we signed up for Skills and Drills (a bargain at $20!) and also summer camp. The summer camp has been fun - a good combination of outdoor play and indoor games and crafts, with no screen time. It's a fantastic value at $50/week for 11am to 4pm M-Fri including water/pool play, lunch, snack and a t-shirt! Next year I hope they'll offer full day summer camp so we can sign up for more weeks. The staff here are great! Lacey, the new director, is implementing more community events. Coaches John, Tim and Bronson are dedicated and give a lot of their time and energy, even hosted a scrimmage game for my daughter's team last season on their own time. They don't give me a hard time on the rare occasion I'm a little late either, which I appreciate. Bottom line -- this is a nice clean facility with dedicated staff, strong basketball program, and fun camps! You get way more than you pay for!
