The lone representative apologized for the aforementioned online sites that had not been updated to reflect the center's temporary closure. Informed center's slated re-opening is "next year". No reason was given as to the why the closure or an approximate re-opening date. Left with a directional flier to other SAFE Collection Centers. Highly recommend confirmation with the center you choose to drop off at prior to insure they're indeed open. PSA: It is Charles E Younger Drive WEST! The flyers do not include the WEST, which in hindsight was quite the ironic way to start this bewildering process that should have been simple. I do not know if it is bureaucrazy or lack of training or what but this service is EXTREMELY limited and the staff is supremely unhelpful from start to finish. They yell at you to stay in your car as if they are going to call the police for not following this rule posted nowhere. I now know it is because they will arbitrarily pick and choose what they deem to be hazardous waste and want you to leave before you realize that a single person with no apparent qualifications will make the sole determination as to what they deem to be worthy of collecting. For example, I had gasoline and diesel products that needed proper disposal. They took the gasoline and not the diesel with no explanation beyond "that is your trash to put in your trash cans." They were correct in that I am indeed not in the habit of picking up other people's hazardous waste for fun but how they could make the determination that gas and not diesel was hazardous based SOLELY on the APPEARANCE of the container without even asking what was inside is shocking. The supervisor essentially told me to throw toxic, flammable products into the trash. Anyone living in Los Angeles for the last few years should be outraged at being told to put flammable liquid into standard garbage cans especially when someone is trying to do the right thing. For what it is worth, if it is not specifically listed as "accepted", you might as well assume the answer is they do not accept it. I had other items that I felt should have been disposed of there but this same supervisor decided it was not and told me to leave. I asked the quite reasonable question of someone working for the sanitation department, if not here then where can I bring it? I was asking if she knew where there was a place to bring garbage that was not accepted by them and they did not have a clue. Literally no idea where even a general garbage collection site was. If they are going to have an opaque system of acceptance and rejection where they do not let you step foot outside your car so they can make arbitrary determinations without information to make the choices and without informing the customers why, at a minimum they should know where the rejected items can be taken. Not so. In short, if you have a few very specific items that fit a perfectly round hole with exactly the same perfectly matched round peg, you have a chance of them accepting it. You have no chance of having input on the choice or explanation for the arbitrary decision made by a single person and expect no information or assistance when they do not accept something even if it is as bizarre as accepting gasoline and not diesel. You may even be told to break the law if it helps get you out of their hair. If the city wants to encourage people to do the right thing in disposing of waste, they would greatly benefit from at least providing better information. read more

I finally had to get rid of my old cell phones, a laptop and an iPad that I have been wanting to get rid of for years, but never got around to doing. Once I moved to the Westwood area and found this, I was so relieved :) !! First and foremost, I made sure I removed the hard drive from my laptop and destroyed that, and also factory-reset my cell phones and iPad. This place is only open on Fri and Sat from 8 am - 2 pm. But e-waste is only taken on Saturdays. This totally works out for me since this place is so close by :D !! If you go, you just have to keep in mind to place everything in your trunk. Once you get there, you stay in your car and the employees will unload the items from your trunk. Then you drive off. It's that easy and stress-free :) ! read more

I echo those here who complain about the fact that they don't accept items if you walk up to the center. You have to be in a car to drop off the recyclables They turned me away with a bag of batteries. This is a shame especially since a lot of students may not own cars and wouldn't be able to recycle their electronic waste. read more

While I'm happy that there is a SAFE Disposal Center near UCLA, I'm disappointed at the fact that there is no way to drop of items unless you have a car. In an area with lots of students, not everyone has a car. And, in general, I feel that everyone should have access to a way to dispose of their items safely. I showed up on foot with a few items and was turned away. I'm not sure what to do with them if I can't dispose of these without a car. They should at least have one hour a day where people can drop off items regardless of having a car, imo. read more

This is a great asset to the city of Los Angeles. I've been looking high and low for a place to recycle my old electronics and batteries. I read some reviews for other places and some said the people working there were rude, disrespectful (to them and to their vehicles), and outright mean/angry. My experience with this place was the opposite of that. This place is so easy and efficient (and close to where I live ). I went on a Saturday morning and there was a small line of cars. I got in line and waited maybe 20min and then pulled up, popped my hatch and the staff came and grabbed all my junk). They were friendly, nice, and efficient. They make it super easy! Just drive up, throw it in park, and pop open your trunk. They'll take care of the rest. I've yet to encounter any long lines. 3 cars ahead of me at the most. If you have other things in your trunk, do yourself and the staff a favor and make it obvious what's for them.
