The line is very inefficient and slow. I would not recommend this place. We came here to dispose of an old tv. It is not worth the effort. There is low value and you lose a lot of time waiting. They should do a pre-registration form and appointment times to cut down on the inefficiencies. One redeeming factor is that you don't have to get out of the car. We dropped off a recalled battery for an e-bike here. They don't provide a receipt for the drop-off, but they was okay with us to take a video as proof of the drop-off so we could get a replacement. Waiting in line was about 40 minutes. read more

I came her to drop things off for SAFE Recycling. To prepare, I placed my items in boxes, each labeled with what they contained, in my trunk. These boxes will be returned to you. I pulled up to the gate, showed my Driver's license. Then I was instructed to go left and I followed the sign till I saw 2 cars in a line. When I got to the front of the line (2 mins later), the man asked me for my address and what I was dropping off. I informed him I had: electronics, batteries, sharps, and meds. He had me put my hazard lights on and then told me to wait till I was called in. I was called in less than a minute later and instructed to pull forward. Once there, the gentleman asked me what I had, and I repeated the list. He asked me to open my trunk and proceeded to remove the boxes and dump them in the appropriate bin. Then replace the boxes to my trunk. The process is streamlined and you never get out of your car. I was there for a total of 5-10 minutes. It was super fast and easy. I've read horror stories of other SAFE recycle locations- like UCLA- where there is usually a long line. I'm thrilled that this was so quick and on a Sunday no less. read more

Received shameful treatment at this place which ought to be encouraging the recycling of hazardous waste instead of making the process difficult. First, they're only open Sat & Sun 9-3, so hours are very limited. Second, the gates/entrances are confusing. I arrived at the massive facility on Imperial Highway which apparently goes by two different addresses: 7660 W Imperial Hwy B, Playa Del Rey, CA; AND 11000 Vista Del Mar. When I arrived, the gate on Imperial Highway was closed, and there was a sign stating you needed to go to Gate C at 11000 Vista Del Mar, so, in vain, I searched for another entrance and Gate C, only to discover that the Waze led me back to the exact same place and the confusing signage only refers to those coming for a tour. So, after having driven from Santa Monica to this dump (literally), and wasting more time winding around south Playa del Rey, I again backtracked to the same entrance, only to be told that I had gotten there two minutes late (on the same day that Daylight's saving time changed, mind you) and was rudely admonished that I could not drop anything off. I went to recycle some old gasoline at this facility. The process was smooth and easy. The technicians are super nice and super professional. I even offered them a tip for their service and they refused to accept it; they told me it was a pleasure to be of service! You just don't find this sort of help and support much these days! On another note, if you're recycling gasoline, there are a few things to note: 1. Do not bring more than three (3) five-gallon containers at a time. 2. Do not bring the gas in any container that you don't want to lose - I went to Home Depot and bought some cheap orange buckets with lids as I didn't want to lose my actual "red" spare gas containers. This place is awesome! So convenient and hassle-free. Like all the other Yelpers mentioned, you just drive in and they unload for you. And the workers are all so friendly. Both Google maps and iMaps gave me confusing directions - it's located on Imperial Highway just east of the ocean so you just need to either head west on Imperial or if you're coming from the ocean, head east. The disposal service is awesome. They're open Saturdays from 9am to 6pm, but check that yourself. They take old paint, solvents, batteries (any kind), computers, monitors. You just enter on Imperial Highway, stay to the left and follow the numerous signs. You just pull into the covered area and pop your trunk. Just inside and to the left of the Gate B entrance off of Imperial Highway is a convenient, easy drop off point for your obsolete electronics. You are guided to the recycling point by both signs and a friendly greeter. You drive your vehicle into the equivalent of a fast food order and pick up line. After another friendly greeting they pop open your trunk and take the equipment for sorting and recycling. You don't even have to get out of your car. After a number of years, we all tend to accumulate old hazardous and electronic waste (e-waste). I know I do which is par for the course but then I ponder what the heck to do with it because I don't really want to just toss it in the trash bin. I did some research and came across this location where you can take your e-waste to dispose of. It's located at the Hyperion Treatment plant in El Segundo. It's a fairly simple process as you just drive onto the plant through Gate B which is the gate off Imperial Highway closest to Vista del Mar. You pull up and drive into the area under the tent. For your safety, you're not supposed to get out of the car as the workers dressed in white hazmat suits and goggles, which amusingly reminded me of the Oompa Loompas in Willy Wonka, will retrieve all your junk out of your trunk or back seat. Once done, they thank you and you drive off. How long did it take to drive in and drop off 3 boxes of old paint cans and old cleaning supplies?? 30 seconds. Not bad for doing the right thing. That stuff should never be thrown in the trash. It needs to be taken to a Household Hazardous Waste drop off location such as the Hyperion Plant in Playa Del Rey (by El Segundo). This was the easiest errand I ran all day. The setup and staff were so efficient and friendly. For some reason I thought I'd get lost trying to find Gate B, but it's right off the street and there's a huge sign indicating it's Gate B. There were about 4 cars ahead of me and the entire process didn't take longer than 10-15 minutes. I went to In-n-Out afterwards and that took longer. read more

Talk about an adventure - Hyperion Treatment Plant is a sight to behold. For those who've seen Terminator 2, the final fight at the industrial complex with all the big machinery and metal pipes is exactly what this facility is about (minus the molten metals... don't think I saw any). The facility's public area offers plenty of signs and directions to steer people to the hazardous waste drop off area, which is a shack about the size of a Starbucks that you can drive-through. In the shack, you will find big burly men in white hazard suits stacking old electronics, etc in their respective piles. Each vehicle waits its turn for the burly men to unload the waste electronics. My turn came quickly. The burly men banged on my trunk as I fumbled for the trunk open switch. One of the big dudes yelled "what do you have" and I told him "computer and battery", out came 3 bigger guys and my old PC and heavy battery were gone in a flash. The big man slammed my trunk shut and yelled "GO", and I was out of the shack. The whole thing happened in under a minute. I was like "woah" I now refer to the shack as: "the shack where big dudes take stuff from your trunk" read more
