We stayed out by the Convention Center and rode a streetcar into town for $1. Glad to have that streetcar, because I wouldn't have been comfortable walking thru the town. Lots of panhandling going on. Loved the Peabody Hotel, thought Beale St. was a great disappointment. It was downright seedy, with security guards outside most of the shops. And most of the shops were just tourist junk, if you get my drift. Of course the best part of visiting Memphis to touring Graceland. Doing that right takes the better part of a day. The square in the shadow of the Clayborn Temple stands as a reminder to the community and the people that endured this event. Martin L King lent his support and voice to the city of Memphis. His speech was a cornerstone cry for change in this country. The engagement of people of work, no matter the work." To receive a decent wage. "The dignity, of a man's work is to build a better community. To remind men and other cities that the wages need to be paid for what a man's worth." During the strike Dr. Martin L King was assassinated in April of 1968. The local 1733 union was finally granted fairer treatment. A decent wage. Prior to this a man could be fired for no reason. Crushed to death (safety being a major catalyst), to these strikes. Again, this square is a place to remember, respect, and honor those that fought so hard to bring a peaceful end and outcome. To allow diversity and inclusion for all. Behind this movement we are still fighting this battle. Remember the past. In fact, the Clayborn Temple on April 25, 2025 was intentionally set on fire. The investigation of the incident was ruled arson. Still today, here in this plaza hate crimes exist. If that energy were to be directed to love and kindness the world we live in might be a little bit different. In the wake of the tragedy of arson they are going to rebuild the temple. Spend some time here. The whole strike and details of the protest are marked and you can use your phone and listen to it. This is a free event. They have on street parking.

The I Am A Man Plaza is adjacent to the Clayborn Temple. This site is where the Memphis sanitation workers gathered during a strike in protest of working conditions. The Plaza is an open site that has a sculpture paying tribute to the strikers and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The plaza also has a wall engraved with the names of the people who participated in the strike. Martin Luther King came here during the strike and was later assassinated. It's hard to understand the thought process of those who had hatred for another person in that time period. This is why it's important to visit places like this just to pay respects. This is a free site at no cost.
