The PO gets a bad rap and rightly so. The busiest times are when there is one window open. When one window closes...it's time for a break. And when a new clerk has to take a long swig from the water bottle before helping a customer, it can be infuriating. There was a young clerk patiently helping a family with passports, and disseminating useful information, but I didn't get that person, I got the water bottle drinker...who told me they were out of forms and to go to another location. Worst post office in the area... You are better off going to either the Highwood or Deerfield post offices. If you're going west, the Northbrook post office on Dundee Rd. is better, and the one on Church near Shermer in Northbrook is the best yet (though really small). I avoid the Highland Park post office unless I absolutely can't get out to another office, or just to drop a package off. If you're just dropping off envelopes, go to a drop box anywhere else (the one in Jewel is good), or you can get trapped in the round-about because of that infernal traffic light. You can't pay me to wait in line here. The staff - goodness bless them - seem to be working hard, but just can't keep up with the demand. There's almost always a line, and it's frequently packed because of how many people refuse to use the kiosk (which can do 75% of what the people waiting in line seem to need). Unfortunately this creates a bottleneck, making it impossible to access the kiosk or the PO boxes, because the line is out the door. Even when you can get to the self-serve kiosk, half the time I'm there it's having technical problems. It's either completely down, or isn't able to perform some service. Even when it's working, it's super slow and the dimension sensors never work, so I have to manually enter everything. At least it seems like the screen got an upgrade sometime last winter. Still, I can't seem to count on the self-service kiosk working. Oh, also, the automatic door there is SLOOOOW and - on two or three occasions - it didn't open all the way (not sure if it was a mechanical issue or because of the wind). If you're in wheelchair or mobility device, you might have problems as well. Entering the lot is a mess, because there's a huge incline that some lower cars will scrape on, and it'll really test your suspension. The eastbound stoplight accommodates left turns into the lot for a few seconds, but only if traffic moves nicely - and nobody in downtown Highland Park seems to drive with urgency. The lot near the building entrance is cramped, and nobody in downtown Highland Park seems to know how to park straight either, so it can be a mess. If you're driving a large SUV or truck, good luck. Parking near the drop-box / Sunset Woods Park entrance is a safer bet. Take it slow when exiting, if you want to keep your muffler, because that ramp transition is even worse on the way out. Seriously, folks; go to the Highwood or Deerfield post office instead. They aren't great, but they still operate better and are much more convenient to get in and out of. The kiosks seem to work better there. If you are going west or south, the Northbrook post office on Church near Shermer or the Techny post offices are WAAAAY better - possibly the best in the area. You can also get a lot of stuff done at the USPS.com website, and save yourself a trip to the post office all-together. read more

Sure miss all the former postal employees who have since retired from the post office. Today there was only one postal person who was chatting up people at the self check out kiosk. There were SEVEN people waiting for over ten minutes with absolutely nobody checking people out. Worst service and only the one US post office employee who when she finally decided to come back to the check out area she started walking around in the back ignoring people. if I could give this location NEGATIVE stars I would. this location has lazy, dishonest employees. I had a package that was supposed to be delivered today, July 5th, for a child's birthday party. Tracking first said by 5 pm, then was updated to 1-3pm. At 4:14pm I received notification that it could not be delivered as addressed. I had printed a copy of the shipping label for my own records and confirmed with the recipient that it was correct, which I knew it was because I'd shipped there before. What was different today? The single family home is close to Ravinia so there was heavy traffic. The recipient didn't even receive their regular mail today. So this delivery driver decided to just not deal with the Ravinia traffic and opted to not deliver their mail or packages, which included birthday presents for a child's and to attempt to not have any responsibility for it, they lied and said it couldn't be delivered as addressed and returned it to sender. The USPS Customer Service line, once you get through to a human, is nothing more than an inbound customer service call center. They can do nothing more than enter a ticket and the local post office (833 Central, Ph 847-433-3201), which closed to the public at 3pm today, has 2-3 days to reply to me, after they receive the ticket during their normal business hours. So, not till Monday the 5th. They had until 8 pm to deliver this package. They could have said attempted delivery made, will try again on Monday. But no. They flat out returned it to sender. In Minnesota. So by the time it is returned to me, it will have missed both the birthday party and the child's birthday. Because a driver is a lazy and dishonest liar. THIS is a prime example of why the USPS is failing. UPS, FedEx and DHL all have central call centers that CAN reach a local supervisor during ALL delivery hours, to fix mistakes like this before they are returned to the sender. NOT having a supervisor that this driver was responsible to answer to until deliveries were finished at 8pm today allows the drivers to be liars and dishonest. This package has been on that local delivery truck since 6:10 AM this morning. I will NEVER use USPS to ship ANYTHING ever again. I have had them say they delivered packages that were missing u til a tracer was put on them and then they miraculously showed up days later, and now this. THIS is the final straw. This driver should be ashamed of themselves. People's packages and deliveries DO matter. WE are the reason they have a job. If I could have my regular mail delivered by FedEx instead, I would. She took my phone number and called when they had enough cash on hand to make the refund. It took quite a few months because they rarely have that much cash but she faithfully kept my number. I would give this place a zero if I could. The workers there are so extremely rude and unprofessional. I went there to go drop off the last of my wedding invitations and the lady said they were too heavy and needed an extra stamp. My father went there THE DAY BEFORE with the SAME INVITATIONS and they did not tell him that. So I told the lady who was helping me that they are they same invitations that were dropped off yesterday so if those were also too heavy, what happened to them. She told me she doesn't know and I said what do you mean you don't know and she said "I said what I said". She and I got into it and she could not tell me what happened to my other wedding invitations. Also while I was fighting with the one lady, another client was arguing with the supervisor because they lost her package and weren't being helpful to the client. This is my hometown and business postal office so I am here almost daily and some days it is great and more often it's not. Now to be fair I don't think that my negative experience here is entirely the post office's fault. The lines do tend to get very long and the wait can seem interminable. Often it would seem that someone from the US government does not really even want to complete your transaction. So many questions, procedures and hoops to jump through. Although most of the postal workers at the Highland Park office do their job with a smile on their face there are one or two that appear to take demonic pleasure in making you fill out another form or force you to return with yet another "required" document. Argh! The worst, though, are the other customers. One woman was yelling at me the entire time in line about a parking lot incident. Not even sure what she was upset about. Other's cut the line because they are "more Important" or "busier" than everyone else and entitled to do so. But until FedEx and UPS get nuked, I'll take my business there. I sent an overnight package to California the other day, containing some important documents related to real estate-ing, guaranteed to be delivered yesterday at noon. It wasn't delivered until today, when all the places those documents needed to go would be closed. I went in to get my money back, which they gave me (only in cash though, not back on the card I used), but that doesn't solve the issue that the papers didn't get to where they needed to go when they promised them. I am a very patient person. Yesterday I visited this post office twice and still didn't get my box sent due to long lines and lack of staff. This morning I was there first thing & waited as they were late opening. Clerk 19 was the only one there. The place was a mess & she clearly wasn't thrilled to be there. Two stars because I was pleasantly reminded that my husband is a total badass. One star for everything about this post office. Yep...nope I still see no reason to ever go back here. Sadly the post office in my community continues to be the worst. There were two people ahead of us, two employees who weren't assisting anyone, and finally he busted out loud,"Good luck everyone! I'm out of here. Mail delivery switches between excellent to very poor. Had a great letter carrier who seems to have vaporized. Mail was delivered early and at the same time each day. Packages were left as I designated. Suddenly, mail is being delivered very late, sometimes as late as 6 PM. Mail holds are unpredictable. PO can not seem to deliver the mail on the day that the hold ends. This means you have to track it down. Are they going to deliver or not? I have bills to pay and I need to have my mail. My impression is that mail is delivered when the PO feels like delivering it. I have complained about this in the past and it has done no good. In addition, there is one service agent at the customer desk who is a real stickler for regulations. Never put a staple in your mail. Never. She will feel it and charge you extra money for hand cancelling. Her entire life is mail and I fear she has been promoted to Postmaster bc I have not seen her at the service counter recently. Bring pleasant to this woman does not help. I feel sorry for her co-workers. Like everything else these days, the HP PO service is barely functional. We probably need to get rid of the current Postmaster General who was appointed by Trump. I am almost never inside this post office, thankfully. I went in today to mail my broken cell phone back to the insurance company. There were 3 people in line in front of me, and the man waiting 2 people ahead had his face mask barely covering his mouth. He got to the counter and at no time did the clerk ask him to wear his mask properly. I am a caregiver for my parents in their 90's and I do NOT want to bring COVID home to them. As the guy walked out, I asked him to cover his nose (by this time, he was wearing a chin mask) and he placed it on correctly. A customer in line thanked me for speaking up. When I got to the counter (big flower lady was the employee there, not the same employee that dealt with the unmasked customer ) I complained that the other clerk did not ask him to cover his nose. Know what her answer was? "We don't police the customers." She did not apologize, she did not say we will try to do better...nothing like that. Just snapped that they don't police the customers. She apparently is the supervisor of the other clerk and said she'd speak to her but what is wrong with these people? They don't already know to request a customer put the mask on correctly? They don't care? Do they not realize they put their own health at risk when they ignore this issue? To top it off, when I was walking out, there's a man standing there in line with no mask at all. Of course, I spoke up. I hoped we would all be helping each other out, but some customers don't care and this post office apparently does not either. The lady with the bright glasses that someone else referred to is the friendliest, most competent USPS employee I have ever dealt with and she is funny and casual which is great.
