I must say I learned a lot. And the things I learned I can apply it to my work as a graphic designer right away. I thought this would be a class learning how to create new typefaces and drawing letters and such. But we had a 3 hours class talking about typography, the meaning behind it and how it effects us in our daily life in terms of design. Leaning about all the little things and the different categories, fonts, typefaces and what font to pic for what situation, how to optimize the letters using the Adobe software... it's super informative and I'm glad I took this class. read more

This is real world learning. Having been in the graphic design industry for over 10 years, it's always a challenge trying to keep up with the updates to Adobe InDesign. I've taken Type Ed's basic classes (level 1 & 2) not to increase my graphic design skills, but so that I can become a better CLIENT to the designers I do work with. I think anyone who has to edit or manage the work of graphic designers needs to take at least the level 1 class, because it gives you the technical knowledge and authority to give more meaningful critique of the draft work you receive. I've been a VP of Marketing-level exec for 20+ years, and the sad truth is even very **talented** graphic designers are not schooled thoroughly enough in the technical points of typography [quick: the difference between an em and en dash...?!?]. And great content layout--truly beautiful, well executed typography--is all about nailing the small, technical details. The instructor, Michael Stinson, is brilliant. He perfectly balances the engineering and the art aspects of the type design challenge. He's able to tie back modern practices to their roots (the history of script and type development). I have attended two type ed classes and a workshop. I have to say they have all been exceptionally satisfying and educational classes. I have learned more in these classes then I have in my years as a Graphic Design major. I enjoy the classes immensely and would recommend anyone that is serious about typography to attend these classes. They are well worth your investment. TypeEd is the best investment I've ever made for myself outside of my traditional design education. Whether you're a newbie or a avid typographer, what you learn from their classes, workshop, and/or clinics will set you apart from other designers who say they have the credentials, but it's your portfolio that will shine, not just your resume. And when you apply what you've learned from Michael Stinson or any of the other instructors to your portfolio work or client's work, you will find that your skills began to be even more noticeable and unmatched in our competitive field of communication and graphic design. For the last year, I've been following their Facebook page, Twitter and Blog (Rag Right), and I've watch TypeEd constantly grow and improve themselves as an intimate educational institute, which means that I feel assured that the knowledge I learned from them are always going to meet and at times exceed industry standard. I've attended Type 2 and Mark My Word, both at the Downtown LA location. They also offer Type 1 for beginners and Type 3 for advance typographers. Additionally, they offer specialty workshop taught by special guest lecturers which I plan to attend as soon as I find the right time to fit into my schedule. My favorite part about TypeEd is that it is intimate with only 5 other students. You get one-on-one time with the instructor and valuable group constructive criticism. I've taken typography in community college and state college and I've learned more in TypeEd sessions then I have in any of those other college course, and that is kind of sad to say about the state system. Just some advice for someone who is about to graduate like me.. you better have some TypeEd typography skills under your belt. Don't just meet the bare minimum... that's just not going to cut it for us. You really have to soak in all the skills you can and make sure you're a go-getter. I can tell you from experience that by showing you're highly interested in your field, employer will find YOU highly interesting. This is an excellent series on typography and graphic design. The type of instruction offered here is not really taught in graphic design programs anymore and it is essential to anyone who wishes to master the craft of graphic design. Beyond the essential courses there are also workshops related to specific projects. The one I took was Whisky Type and it was very refreshing and and enjoyable to apply myself to a new type of project, as I don't do packaging very often. All of the classes are very well structured and thought out and Michael's knowledge is truly extensive. He's really passionate about design and it shows. I highly recommend both for students looking to supplement their education and professionals looking to brush up on their skills or try a new type of project. read more

I just took TypeEd's "Type 1: The Basics" class, and I can't recommend it enough! After taking other design and typography courses elsewhere in which I felt thrust into the conceptual without being given the fundamentals and the nuts-and-bolts from which to begin thinking critically about type, this class was EXACTLY what I was looking for. The class was informative, in-depth, and so well taught. Starting with history and going into best practices (both in theory and through professional experience) for selecting and setting type, I now feel like I have a great foundation for better design and a more effective process. I was also able to stay to observe the critique of student work from other TypeEd workshops, which was just as informative. The environment was supportive and inspiring and clearly comprised of industry professionals who are knowledgable and passionate. It was a great way to sharpen my design eye. This class is amazing. They teach you everything you need to know about typography in as little as 3 session days! I was amazed at how much I learned in this class and how little was taught in my school compared to here. This class will teach the basics of typography, how to set type, how to use InDesign (a very, very useful software), and many other things that will increase your skills as a typographer/graphic designer. The class is divided into 3 sessions. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced. Each session will last about 6 hours with several short breaks in the middle and a practice period towards the end. The instructor is very knowledgeable in this field and incredibly helpful during the practice period. Throw any typography question at him and he will answer it no problem. I learned more from this class in 3 sessions than I did in 1 year from my school. Definitely worth it! read more

EDIT 06/29/13: I'm updating my review to reflect all the courses and workshops I've taken at Type Ed. To preface this I'm a prior student of Michael Stinson's Graphic Design and Type & Typography classes that were taught at College of the Canyons (Michael Stinson is one of partners and the instructor behind Type Ed). Through Type Ed I've have only taken Class 2, Class 3, and two workshops. My background is of fine art/illustration, but I've been fascinated with type and how to work with it properly. Luckily enough Michael Stinson teaches you just that. If you want to know type - the different classifications, what to do and what not to do, how to use it branding, the proper way to set it, creating hierarchy, getting the smallest detail just right, and more - then I highly recommend enrolling in Type Ed. Especially if you're a graphic design major that hasn't had much experience with a typography class (or that the subject was discussed briefly - you need semesters of Typography classes to full understand this topic). Classes are taught with power point presentations that consist of defining terms/ideas, examples (real world and fake) that pertain to the topic at hand, the "dos and don'ts" of each concept, quizzes at the end of each section, and you're able to ask any questions throughout the lesson. If there is any available time (chances are there will be) you have the option of going into greater detail with anything discussed in class or you can even ask how to approach personal projects (i.e.: how to properly typeset a book). Workshops consist of a demonstration of how to solve a specific task of type (i.e.: properly inserting charts and tables) followed by creating the layout yourself with one-on-one assistance if need be. At the end your work will be printed out and corrections will be made. You're able to work on projects on your own time as you're provided with all of the files during the workshop. Classes and Workshops are small and will range from three to six hours. The maximum number of students per class/workshop is 6 (the minimum needed is 3); and even with the maximum number of students in a workshop, everyone was able to receive one-on-one help and ask questions when needed. There are also various resources shared in each class/workshops session - what magazines and books to look for concerning type (the subject at hand or examples of it being executed properly) and sources on how to use InDesign (CS5.5 and up is needed for any workshop and Class 3). As for being a prior student in a semester long (16 to 18 weeks depending on the season), five-hours-a-week Typography class taught by Michael Stinson... what I learned in that class is condensed into Class 1 and part of Class 2 here. The only things that are missing in Type Ed are the class projects (hand drafting type with french curves to creating a deck of playing cards), graded quizzes, and earning college credit/units. That's it. All of the principles taught in Type Ed I've carried over into my own work - from creating a submissions portfolio using InDesign (placing and kerning images as if they were type - precision is everything and these details are noticed when it comes to applying for various art school and especially in the industry) to typesetting my notes for various classes... as well as correcting handouts from professors. That last part can't be helped as it is a side-effect from these classes (it's one of those "crazy artists things"). For background on the instructors... Michael Stinson (instructor) and Rachel Elnar (producer) are both active in the industry - from production work at their business Ramp Creative to judging graphic design/type competitions to being presenters at design conferences - and teach at various colleges in Southern California. Their work has been featured in multiple design publications, most recently their rebranding campaign for Agostoni Chocolate. They know what the industry needs for the future and that's what you'll learn from these classes. In short? Do you know the difference between a hyphen, en-dash, and em-dash? Or what an allograph is? How about the various types of grids? Enter TypeEd. If you don't know these words, then you will. And if you do know, you can always learn more. I've now been to six events with TypeE--four classes and two talks/lectures. The quality of the classes are second to none, and the instructors are very knowledgeable about typography. I've attended Type 2, Type 3, and their Pressed for Type (printing) classes, and participated in their type bootcamp (intense 2-hour type workout) and Setting the Table (book layout) workshops. And I'm signed up for two more already! They offer Type 1, 2, and 3 for depending on your skill level, as well as various other classes and workshop, like designing a whiskey label. In the classes, you learn everything from the basics of type (different classifications, letterforms, vocabulary), to intermediate level design, to advanced type setting. The classes range from 3-8 hours, but they go by so fast. I have my degree in graphic design and I've always been interested in typography, but I never received the level of education that TypeEd provides. Michael Stinson (one of the instructors) goes into extreme detail, and he doesn't sugarcoat his critiques, which can be intimidating at times, but you leave the class having learned so much.
