I grew up playing with an ancient 1930s Remington that my mom had from her post WW2 career, and as a budding young writer there was something magical about seeing my thoughts appear, lead slugs driven by keystrokes striking carbon impregnated ribbon and leaving their marks on the pristine paper, words appearing as if from nothing. In school, I learned to type officially on a mid-60s Royal manual, and for graduation got a portable Royal electric that I used to great effect until the early 80s when one of my classmates in grad school wrote the software that let us emulate phototypesetting on the early, early Xerox 2700 laser printer... My typewriters didn't survive multiple back and forth coast-to-coast moves and a couple of divorces, but recently, I acquired a '40s Royal KMM which "needed some love". And speaking of love, my partner -- also a writer and typewriter aficionado -- had a '30s Royal KHM that also needed some love. And I just happened to discover TypeSpace. OMG what a find. Tony is a gem -- he's obsessed and it shows. His dad was at JPL and he's got that same rocket scientist DNA, but applied differently. My partner and I came in for a chat and stayed well over an hour. It was a super simple decision to bring our typewriters over for service. We dropped them off and were advised it would be a few weeks. Given the huge backlog the shop had that was fine. We had the full spectrum of service, from full restoration to "restore to function". We both opted for "restore to function" -- I wanted to maintain the very nice patina on mine, and hers would have needed more extensive work. The call came, and we picked them up this last weekend and could not have been happier! 10/10 recommended, and we're taking her '20s Remington in for service this next weekend!! Oh -- if you love typewriters, it will be really, really hard not to leave with one of the models he has for sale. Man! Just amazing. Tony is just the best!

Cute hole in the wall typewriter store. Had to stop in here because I have always loved the charm of a vintage typewriter. This place has them wall to wall. Not only can you purchase one here, they also fix type writers! We had the pleasure of meeting Mark who shared his knowledge about typewriters and stories of his own collection. They also had a corner of vintage books containing type writer pictures and information. A great spot if you're a collector or need your typewriter fixed.

Truly a worthwhile destination for the typewriter collectors and those curious about the wonderful machines. Machines ready to be typed on are within reach and customers are encouraged to try them out. There is a large table in the center of the room making it easy to type until you find a machine you want. The owner is warm and welcoming. The serviced machines are reasonably priced--sure, you could try to track down a machine at a yard sale--but at The Type Space you can find a machine which has been cleaned and serviced. I left the store with new feet for my Corona 4 and a sweet Type Space T-shirt.

I've purchased from Tony several times over the past year. He's sold me lots of rubber feet for machines and just recently a carriage for a Smith Premier 2 (pictured) which I cleaned up. Tony's prices are always reasonable and he ships super fast. It's wonderful to work with Tony and Mark and I recommend them 100% if you're looking for rubber feet, typewriter parts, or are in the area and looking for a machine or a repair job.

We wanted to give our typewriter to our granddaughter it belonged to my wife's father it is a 1934 Royal. We knew it had some issues so we took it to Type Space this was a great decision on our part. Anthony went thru it and listed what needed to be done and the cost we gave him the go ahead to get it working. I have to say I wish I could rate this Company 10 stars but it will get 5 because that is as high as I can do here. Great conversation about the typewriter. We didn't expect this done till after Christmas but got a text and it is ready to be picked up. If you need a typewriter worked on definitely bring it there

    Clean and ready for everything!

"you mean the COFFEE baaar..." one of them snidely stated...sure...thanks for the clarification, rude person...I haven't been in for awhile and I was looking forward to grabbing a beer and browsing for my birthday. they looked away and sort of rolled their eyes? rude...the other one responded "yeaaa it's been closed for awhileeeee..." like I GET IT, so sorry I'm out of the loop and was looking forward to it and I didn't know the alcohol part of the BAR was no longer a thing. MY BAD. the rest of my hour was meh. the interaction put a pall on the whole trip and where I normally spend *hours* browsing I spent less than one. I found one thing I was considering purchasing but by the time I came back downstairs there was a line around the corner and down the hall, literally 10+ people waiting. nope. no thanks. overall still many cool vendors. kinda sucks you have to pay $10 to play pool for 70 minutes?? it is NOT free. the pop-a-shot game downstairs has ONE ball so you can't actually play that either. the whole Fallout vaults theme from upstairs is gone and makes the downstairs "vaults" seem out of place and disconnected...idk. just kinda bummed man. overpriced, smells bad, bad attitudes, long lines, costly games or games that you can't even play. wcyd. this won't be a primary stop anymore. sad.

I was visiting from out of town and headed to Powell's for some used books when a fuzzy memory hit me: Wasn't there a killer vintage shop I used to buy PEZ from back when I lived in Oregon? No way it was still around, right? One quick search later... it's still alive and kicking -- and I was literally 500 feet from the front door. Fate. Destiny. The Collectible Gods smiling upon me. Inside? Same owner I remembered from decades ago. That alone blew my mind. The inventory is unreal. Every one of my fandoms -- PEZ, Hanna-Barbera, Godzilla, King Kong, classic monsters -- all crammed into this cozy, nostalgia‑soaked cave of wonders. I could pretend I tried to play it cool, but who am I kidding? This place fed my soul. Did I buy more than I should have? Absolutely. Do I regret it? Not even a little. Prices are firm, but honestly, they're fair -- and half this stuff you never see in the wild anymore, even on eBay. If you love vintage collectibles, this shop isn't just a stop -- it's a pilgrimage. P.S. Please don't tell my wife what I spent.

Some things are unaffordable for us and some are more reasonably priced. We found beautiful wood shelves that are stunning and bought them. They were exactly what we were looking for. We got a cool industrial console table abd other fool finds. I have bought a few nicknacks that I like and new art when they had a sale. Street parking is easy to find plus they have a parking lot. There are bathrooms. I would say the one thing I dislike is everything is a final sale. I mean absolutely everything. So I have not bought certain things in case they could not work where we want to put them or we were might want to use. Also for gifts since they are not returnable and want to give my gift receiver's that option. Some staff are more helpful than others. So it depends on who is working. The original family who brought beautiful items from Japan have now largely passed the business to a younger person. I was strolling the neighborhood when a signboard announced an open day. Usually they are by appointment or voice call for entry. If you need their stuff, which you do, make an appointment or voice call for entry. They are on the 3rd floor of a clean warehouse with an elevator. They collect in Japan and ship their own containers. They have household ceramics, some tansu, some beautiful scroll landscape paintings, tools, tables, Japanese clothing, "go boards", sculptures, iron teapots, and more. Northern Japan is akin to Northwest USA and adjacent BC in climate and native culture. The native people in Japan are the Ainu and I visited their cultural center in Japan. Shogun's had on my visit collection of wood sculptures maybe 18-24" by 12" by 12" of bears catching salmon. It's in my pictures. Yes, Northern Japan has salmon! It is an Ainu native food. I have been known to haunt Japanese antique sales in Seattle. Some of the Shogun's items are very, very reasonably priced. I would recommend anyone interested in Japanese antiques, as seen by the photos, to visit by appointment and follow their announcements and other sales channels. The Northwest has a long relationship with Japan, Portland has a long and continuing relationship with Japan. If you want a little antique Japan in your living space or as a gift, Shogun's is a must-visit!

Amazing old SLR cameras, guitars that my wife was messing around with, old toys, books, records at incredible prices... I so wish I could've fit stuff in my stupid suitcase. Records wise, they had The Four Tops, Joe Tex, Archie Bell & The Drells, Martha & The Vandellas, WILSON PICKETT!!!!!! and so many other soul albums I want to own sooo badly. And of course they have a beautiful puffball cat who was enjoying chin scratches but balked at my wife trying to pet her on the back (I WARNED HER). It's everything I need from a retail experience.
