They certainly got the name right! This place has a positively giant collection of vintage skin mags, so if that's your thing, this is your place. They seem to focus on vintage media in general, with a ton of records, VHS tapes, and copies of old local rags. Of course, they also have the general trappings of a vintage store: a small and curious selection of clothing, posters, books, art and more. One thing really stood out for me. The vintage suitcases filled with hundreds of old, abandoned snapshots and family photos. Called "Instant Relatives", they're sold at 50 cents a pop, and I could browse them for hours. I just found the collection so intriguing. There's no rhyme or reason to what's included, it's just other people's forgotten memories of forgotten relatives. I found it both beautiful and sad. Anyhow, that's enough of me getting all poetic about a vintage store. But I'll say it: SMUT is worth a visit. read more

SMUT Vintage - Instant relatives!!! - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

The only reason that SMUT didn't get 5 stars - I wish it were bigger! Very cute store next to Lady Luck - great assortment of buttons, vintage clothes, old photos ($.50 each), and other odds-and-ends. Overall: worthy of weekly stops. read more

SMUT Vintage - from their website - Paris when it sizzles record - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

A gem in the neighborhood. I love walking in frequently because you never know what you're gonna find. Over the years it's been a great place for me to find gifts and really cool stuff to hang on my walls and some really cool furniture. The staff is nice and not in the least bit pretentious...And they give my dog cookies. We love this place. It was pretty cool to see it on Portlandia. Very extensive collection of records and collectibles of almost everything. read more

SMUT Vintage - Awesome sign I was lucky enough to purchase. - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

This was definitely an interesting shop. Like a previous reviewer stated, I didn't really find anything that I really wanted. I did enjoy browsing their selection of fur coats (although it was close to 90 degrees out, so I didn't feel like trying any on). The dressing room looked creative and cute with the mirrors lined along the walls. The taxidermic heads on the wall gave this place a cozy, warm feeling. And like most reviewers said, yes, this is your place to get vintage playboy mags if that is what you are in to! They have a case filled with old black and white photos of strangers that you can purchase, as well as a case of random matchbooks. Definitely a fun place to browse. read more

SMUT Vintage - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

You wouldn't think that there could be SO many unique treasures in this treasure chest sized store! How can I live in a room that is double SMUT's size, but exponentially less treasurable? I bought golden/pink sparkle heels for $14. Case in point. read more

SMUT is still a great place for fun little trinkets and gift ideas for folks who are usually hard-to-buy-for, but the recent renovation and expansion of the place seems to be kinda wasted on more space for used records. And besides the occasional 1950s instructional record, I've never found anything really remarkable in that selection despite hours of digging. In a city with almost three dozen other record stores, surely it's hard to be a unique record store. But fortunately for SMUT, this is not really a record store, but a store with some records. Everything else about the store is just great! Sadly, last time I visited, I was subjected to the loud blaring of music that was just too hard for me to bear. It sounded like an ungodly cross of some X-Games soundtrack snowboard-core with some of that fake Spirit of '77 shit that's preferred by some born-after-'77 weasel with sideburns, pompadour, and a bowling shirt with flames on it (jeez...do I generalize much?). Y'know...the kinda person who's only two good records might be "Apocalypse Dudes" by Turbonegro and the first Descendents album (probably!). Or maybe the kinda anus-for-ears that thinks "Raw Power" is an infinitely better Stooges album than "Funhouse"...or the kinda guy that thinks "My War" is the best Black Flag album (okay...certainly!), and still fondly recalls the Voodoo Glow Skulls as a decade-best (but these people are always so buffoonish, though!). So, from now on, whenever I'm in your town, I will be calling ahead to make sure that a female voice picks up the phone. Then I know that I will be flipping through old postcards and campaign buttons to the more soothing sounds of Patsy Cline or Petula Clark. ON EDIT (Feb 2, 09): I've been informed that the employee who was cranking the submediocre snowboardcore no longer works there. Looks like the coast is clear for you to start enjoying this store to its fullest once more. Hooray! (Back to five stars this goes!) read more

SMUT manages to house SO much stuff in this tiny tiny little store. And it's all quite quite radical. This is the stuff I would have collections of in my home if I indulged my packrat tendencies and I were a whole lot cooler. They have lots of records, buttons, bags, rollerskates, jewels, typewriters, clothes, the occasion record player, and just a ton of stuff that you surely MUST have (oh my god an anagram!) read more

A lot of funky clothes, art, and other stuff. Most of it is just funky and not worth buying. The store had very little stuff actually worth owning... It's fun to go in and look around, but don't go here actually expecting to find something. read more

I go here for the records. I like the organization, which is true to form. Newly received items are put in a special zone, so if you visit often you can start there for easy pickin'. Prices are pretty reasonable, and I know it's just a matter of time before some vintage item jumps into my arms and we go home together. It might be an old book about medicine or history in its wild inaccuracies. It might be a red coaches jacket. Maybe even a pair of shoes. Ugh. read more

As an avid postcard writer and enthusiast this place is absolutely on the TOP of my list! While there are bunch of other shops that sell vintage postcards, i find that this place consistently always has the widest selection of UNUSED postcards...at an acceptable price to boot! Since i commit the sacrilege of sending these pristine vintage cards through the mail, i really appreciate the quality and extremely wide variety of the selection. They also have a lot of other small ephemera and randomness that may seem useless to some but is pure magic to me! Patches from the 50s 60s and 70s from random people's bowling leagues, Garbage Pail Kids stickers, matchbooks, vintage found photographs, old girly mags...the thing to remember is that nothing in the whole store is particularly valuable, but to a craphound like myself, it is sheer vintage heaven. read more

This place is affordable and full of interesting artifacts and clothing. I went through an entire luggage full of pre-viet war photos. Made me a bit sad going through them. I wanted to find each person and give them back. maybe you can be a better person and go back and do the deed. I forgot the gals name but she was very nice. hello, if you remember me. read more

SMUT Vintage - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Tiny little store with a great selection of old clothes, knick knacks, records, tapes, and photos of the deceased. A nice supplement to Lady Luck, but with less clothes. They occasionally have small pieces of furniture, too. I usually check out SMUT for old, interesting photos, postcards, and funny tapes. read more

Due to a small child, I usually get about 8 minutes per visit to SMUT. Last week wanted to find a cool photo for a little square frame. SMUT has boxes of great old photos. And so I found a perfect vintage square format black and white night shot of a deer right before a dash for some woods that were lit up in a silhouette by some old flash that I'm sure they sell here. It cost 50 cents and took only 2 minutes to find. Feel the rush, baby. read more

Can't help but smile when going through the shop. So many funny things from the past. Almost bought: There are these old tennis rackets that I really wanted to get but it won't fit with anything in the house. They were $15 each. And a Rooster for $20. Still thinking about them... Other really fun knick knacks, prices are good. Definitely worth a stop on the thrift shop tour. read more

From written-on old postcards to old milkshake makers, to comical buttons and "instant relatives", SMUT has everything weird, wacky, and wonderful. I got two porcelain cups here that I think are my favorite pieces of dishware (and fit under my espresso maker) and picked up some vintage photo postcards of Disneyland when it was first built. Scored an old Rush record for my dad's birthday, and the BF got some funky old medical textbooks. I could spend weeks in here. read more

IItsy bitsy teenie weenie tiny little shop right off Burnside. Some cute stuff, but pretty much just run of the mill junky vintage. I have to admit that I was not able to spend much time perusing the CDs or vinyl selection, since my wife and kid were waiting outside (there's literally no room for a stroller in the store)! Sort of like the walk-in closet of some aging hipster who's been to one too many yard sales. I was going to say that the name was the best part of the place until I just found out that it stood for So Many Unique Treasures. I mean, come on, why couldn't it just have been SMUT and left us all to wonder?? read more

I loved this little vintage shop!!! It was crammed full of awesomeness. They have a great vinyl selection for a vintage shop. Lots of funky pins and patches to choose from. Of course there's a lot of vintage smut (old porno mags). They only have one rack of clothing, but it was all good stuff. Next time I'm in PDX, I'll definitely be going there again. read more

I've stopped by every few weeks and have always spent a few bucks here. They've had some really cool trailblazer's memorabilia that I've picked up as well as some as off the beaten path fun stuff like Yo Mtv Raps trading cards. Oh yeah! read more

SMUT Vintage - Many other trading cards like new kids on the block and who's the boss. Hello 80's! - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

I love SMUT! I have been shopping here for years and I never leave empty handed. Paint by number artwork, old maps, records and even my coffee table are from this place. All the people working there are absolute sweethearts, happy to hold something for me for a few hours or get something out of the window. This place is an institution in the Buckman neighborhood, I hope it never changes! read more

SMUT Vintage - I got this coffee table at SMUT for under $50! A total steal! - Antiques Near Me - Portland, Oregon

Found some cool stuff and didn't pay an are or my leg for it. try nice shop with lots to look at.

I started writing this review over 1 year ago and was so upset I just left it. Now I can say Rude people bad service and not a place I will ever walk into again. read more

I would have given it 5 stars, but I walked out empty handed. too bad, because everything is here was Awesome! I cracked up at the vintage family photos with a sign that read "Instant Relatives". Great prices for a vintage shop. I also wish it was a little bigger, but I was able to maneuver my stroller in there. read more

We love SMUT!! There are all sorts of treasures to investigate, a cool selection of typewriters, great CDs, records, & paperbacks. Today I scored a mint-condition plaid shirt-jac for Owen's back-to-school wear (for a walloping $10.00 I might add)...I also scored an enormous crock for all our kitchen tools. While this may not be the sexiest of purchases, for me it reigns supreme! We live in an old house with an unbelievable lack of drawers, storage or closets. I refuse to go to an over-priced kitchen mecca with items made in China, & you won't catch me in a Drawers-R-Us sort of super store. So, this little goodie is a find. Perhaps some of you won't find such delight in this sort of thing, but SMUT did right by us! We will be back searching for more treasures! I have my eye on a few other items... read more

I guess there are interesting things in this store, but I found the selection to be ad hoc and incoherent. I couldn't find anything I really wanted, only things that made my money excretion glands feel dully stimulated. If there had been anything surprising in their reggae collection, I may have left with some records, but there wasn't. read more

SMUT is the best thrift store in PDX, hands-down. The prices are better than at Red Light or Buffalo (their boot selection in particular stands out), and they have knick-knacks that manage to be interesting without being kitschy. The salespeople are friendly, the selection changes frequently. Much higher overall quality than other consignment/resale shops, and honestly priced. I don't know about you, but I get kind of pissed off thinking about the markup that pickers put on crap from The Bins. The pickers at SMUT have taste and the decency not to gouge their customers. I'd go here more often if it were closer to my house. read more

For the size of this boutique, SMUT really packs a punch. The LP selection is amazing and always priced well below any other place in Portland. The furniture and the other items are very funky, original and unique. I agree with Brandy, I wish they had a bigger space as well. read more

one of my favorite portland vintage stores. some tips if these are the things you're into... the have great patch selection almost every month of playboy ever made great luggage it's medium priced but they sell pretty high quality items and they play awesome vinyl one album at a time, the way it was meant to be listened to! read more

Smut is awesome. Any place that I can get Vanilla Ice collector cards is alright in my book. Plus, since the remodel, the store is even better with more cool things to look through. read more

A very tiny shop with a heart of gold. You have to wonder how they can survive in such a tiny space, but I've scored good records there 3 times and they were more reasonable than most record stores. BEWARE, parking is limited on the street when the neighborhood is busy. I almost parked in the Pub's parking lot, but was warned by SMUT's owner that I very likely would be towed. read more

I'm a fan of good customer service, and this place has a really friendly guy behind the counter. I left with a few cool odds and ends, and when you add those two factors, you get one great store. read more

So this place is super cool! I don't really know how to describe it except for it's really eclectic vintage shop. They have old records and magazines and iron on ones and little trinkets and furniture and mirrors and artwork and I could go on. There's so many little things in there and it's just a little treasure chest. Some of the items are really priced appropriately I think, and some of them are a little overpriced. But they are all vintage and antique so I am not an expert on that, and who knows how they really should be priced. What's awesome is that the girl that was working there was super sweet and nice and really wanted to help you find whatever you need it, and was really apologetic when the person in mind in front of me was taking forever. I really appreciate that. This is a great place to go if you're looking for gifts or random little items that you need for certain occasions. read more

Everytime I watch the TV show "Hoarders" I think, you know what, I could be that guy .. except for the thirty-seven cats. Smut helps me find the things that I need to feed my compulsive collections. They have absolutely nothing that a sane person would ever shop for, and absolutely everything that the rest of us adore. read more

Love it. Got the best lamp, ever, here, and constantly am back in, checking it out. I can't help it, the place just rocks.

This hip little shop is basically a thrift store comprised of vintage things. The prices are fair and affordable (unlike a lot of vintage stores) and they had some interesting vintage treasures. I had a lot of fun looking around at the awesome vintage handbags, medicine bottles, paintings, train cases and suitcases, typewriters, magazines, records, etc. read more

Although I'm from outta town, I travel to Portland occasionally and get my hair cut down the street from SMUT and always feel the need to stop in and see what they have. The owner (I assume) is always very friendly and leaves you free to roam without following you around and making you feel hurried. I spent a REALLY long time looking at the collection of old photos and buttons they have and just enjoyed browsing. I got a couple cool things each time I was there and would love to return anytime I'm in the area. I didn't give it five stars because I wish they had more of a mix of items. I feel like it could be filled more since they expanded. Use the space and expand into more areas of vintage maybe. Otherwise, very cool and will still return! read more

A lot of cool knick-knacks and quirky things at this shop. The prices are reasonable and the staff was really nice.

The vintage store to visit when you want to stock up on "instant relatives" aka old black and white photos of strangers and browse through a collection of old postcards. It's fun to discover the latest vintage odds and ends like buttons, records, typewriters, and luggage they have in stock. Theres also a very small selection of clothing, shoes and accessories. read more

Tons of great inexpensive things here. I loved the large selection of vintage Playboys, Penthouse, etc. As well as the clothing selection, jewelry, buttons. Got a great deal on a vintage army jacket from the 50's in their $5 bin. Also open a little on the later side compared to other stores I visited in Portland. Very friendly staff. Located in a neighborhood with lots of great food around as well. I would most likely return here on another visit. read more
