Oh man, this weekend we got so British and it was so good. Okay, apologies. Yes, I have lived in London for some time, but I did spend my childhood in the US reading all about stately homes and manor estates and watching BBC programming broadcasted in the US. So it's a little bit thrilling to go somewhere and find out, "Ah, this is what it could have been like to have been landed English gentry in the late 1800s..." except that they also have modern comforts such as internet access and gluten-free onion rings. More on that later.
If you're looking to celebrate an occasion or are looking for a romantic weekend away or family weekend or just want to feel a little bit more British, this is a great option.
If England ever has nice weather again, which I am told will happen at some far-off point in the future, you will absolutely want to come here. We spent our time strolling around the enormous grounds, watched a helicopter take off, admired the flowers, and tried to enjoy the sun as much as possible without turning into lobsters (as many of our fellow guests did).
This place is immense and beautiful. It was covered in flowers. It also has what I named "the infinity lawn," which I believe must have been an inspiration for infinity pools. It's a lawn that just goes on and on past where your eye can see. I walked up and down it, barefoot, only stepping on something prickly once.
We even got the sportiest we have been in years. We swam one day and played tennis the next. For people who hadn't played tennis in maybe 10 or 15 years, I think we did okay. They had both indoor and outdoor swimming pools. Everything was immaculately kept and even our bathroom was recently redone with fancy toiletries.
The place has a fancy restaurant and a more casual patio restaurant. The fancy restaurant had excellent food and service. This is the sort of place where everything comes on a silver platter. I am not really a silver platter sort of person. I mean, if I want ketchup, you can just hand it to me, that's fine, no platter needed, but they are platter sort of people, so just go with it.
Gluten-free notes: Man, this place is out of this gluten-free world. I let them know in advance and they told me it would be no problem. But it wasn't until I showed up that I realized how much not a problem it would be. I enjoyed: a gluten-free dinner roll (2nd best gluten free dinner roll ever beaten only by Viajante's freshly baked cumin roll my dining companion told me it was better than his gluten-y one), gluten-free croutons in the onion soup, gluten-free toast at breakfast and... drumroll... gluten-free onion rings made with special flour. I can't even tell you the last time I ate an onion ring. Years. The gluten-eater in my life confirmed they were delicious. This place is so gluten-free friendly, you should just go here for onion rings. Okay, enough about that. If you don't believe me, I even saw some lady carrying around a bag of Genius bread. So they have to deal with this sort of thing all the time. read more
