I debated deeply about this negative post, but my experience is worth sharing. First, introduction…read more I am a proud first time mom, working professional, Berkeley grad and graduate student. My son has had feeding challenges since he was 6 months old. I frankly noticed it earlier, but since he was bottle fed, his sensory difficulties did not pose a problem until we introduced solids. We sought out ACT as early as 8 months to help address his gagging and food avoidant behaviors. It may have been too early an intervention, I may not have been ready myself... for many reasons, we postponed this intervention until now, when Michael is 17 months and struggling to eat solids only. Today, before our teletherapy session began, a very brash owner took over Michael's therapy session to inform me that we were not demonstrating progress and will therefore be dropped. Shawn takes "great pride" in her practice's ability to "demonstrate progress", and because improvements were not being made, I was told I should seek care elsewhere. A lot of logical reasons were offered. Yes, my parenting approach seeks to validate my child's emotional experience and certainly I can improve on how I inadvertently "reward and punish" my son's picky eating and avoidant behaviors. Sure, Michael would benefit from an in person visit with a practitioner who can teach me how to properly manage Michael's crying tantrums on the high chair. My favorite was the "sincere" feedback this owner felt deeply that should be spoken, now, before even allowing our session to start, with a promise that she was not trying to run my son and I out of her practice. Referrals to the nearest graduate school near me were so sweetly offered. Wondering what patients rights and responsibilities are for this practice. I'm currently wondering what this practitioner's rights and responsibilities for care are. Of course, no health plan intervention or grievance will matter at this point as the practice won't be enrolling with our PPO in a month or so. May this perhaps be considered patient abandonment? Is this ethical care under AOTA or CBOT? I'm guessing the practice owner washed her hands from this by promising referrals. Nice save! Long story short, clearly this is a business. Clearly, this business does not put patients first and clearly this business owner prunes for high quality outcomes, perhaps hoping to improve clinical reputation even if the cost is patient abandonment. Thank you for making me aware of the business dynamics dictating the quality of care my son may have access to. It's too bad that your behavior, or rather your "sincere" yet unexpected intervention, undermines your practice's ability to partner with and empower parents, while also undermining the effectiveness of the therapists you hire. Samantha is wonderful, patient and caring. She could have certainly had a direct conversation with me with exponentially better outcomes. What a lost opportunity for her development. I'm sharing this experience and my review with you all because I'm dissatisfied with what happened today. I'm not looking for resolution because I won't trust my son's care to this practice anymore. This was truly unfortunate.

Long review but this one means a lot to me. Also, way overdue!…read more My son was about to be in middle school. I felt bad that at this age, he was still struggling with a speech impediment. He said his Rs like Ws. River was pronounced as Wivah, Purple was pronounced as Pupple. Schoolmates teased him often. He was evaluated at school but did not qualify for speech therapy. I spoke to his Dr and at that time had an HMO. She referred us to a Speech Therapist in Newbury Park (I lived in Oxnard), but the appointments were early and it was too far of a drive and wasn't conducive with my work schedule. So I asked for another referral and we saw a private speech therapist working out of a doctor's office. After about a month, she informed us she was moving to work at a school full time. The following year I switched to a PPO plan. I randomly picked ACT since it was close to my home. Best choice ever! My son started with two appointments a week, 30 minutes each. This lasted for about 8 months. Then he tapered down to once a week for another few months. His therapy lasted for about a year overall. It was a long time but the results were so worth it. His impediment is completely gone and you would never know he previously had one. He was often insecure about speaking aloud and no longer has this worry. I felt bad for my son seeing him struggle. I cannot thank ACT enough. Their services were extremely helpful and very much appreciated. I am very grateful!

From the very beginning, Lily has been incredibly personable, warm, and nurturing. Our daughter (age 2-3) connected with Lily right away, which made a huge difference in her comfort and willingness to engage. Lily has a natural ability to make sessions feel fun and supportive while still being purposeful and effective. We've seen meaningful growth in our daughter's speech and communication, and we truly credit Lily's approach and consistency for that progress. She takes the time to explain strategies to us as parents, so we can reinforce what our daughter is learning between sessions. That level of care and communication really sets her apart. If you're looking for speech services for your child, we cannot recommend Amigo Baby and Lily highly enough.
