As for the food, this is beyond a rip off. It's one thing to charge $75 pp and have good tiny food, but when the food is tiny and bland or stale that's another story. I came here with my friend for afternoon tea. First, I really appreciated for their great customer service! We made a reservation at 1:30pm. But both of us had big meals in the morning. I called Two E Bar to change our reservation time 1:30pm to 4:00pm. When I talked to the bar staff by the phone, he helped us very politely. Atmosphere was marvelous. I purchased royal tea service on Groupon which is a great value. The Afternoon tea service is extremely heavy however and I'm never able to finish all the sweets. I normally have to take home some of the sandwiches and macaroons bcs it's just too much food. The champagne is a nice touch here and it defiantly adds to the elegance of the dining experience. My friend had a voucher for the traditional tea for two and it's definitely worth it. We both selected our own pot of tea. I was basic and opted for the sencha superior. It was a nice mellow green tea. There was a great assortment of sandwiches and desserts. Loved the salmon sandwich and the curry chicken tartlet was a nice little surprise and change of flavor. I liked the mushroom wrap but I assumed that the outside would be flakier, like a puff pastry or phyllo pastry, so I was a little disappointed to discover it wasn't. Still good, though. The desserts were good. I really liked the cherry financier but I also really love cherries and might just be a tad biased. The opera cake was also nice, a bit more on the decadent side compared to the other little bites on the tray but still a nice contrast to have. The scones were amazing. Nice and flaky on the outside with a soft inside. I just wish I started with the scones instead of the sandwiches. Would definitely come again. I really enjoyed my experience at Two E Bar/Lounge. It is conveniently located by Central Park and the N,Q,R 5th Ave stop. I drove there and had no problem finding a parking garage to park in but street parking was a nightmare. The bar/lounge is located within the hotel but is not too hard to find. The service was nice and I didn't have a problem being seated; however, I highly recommend making a reservation even though they say reservations are not necessary. I ordered the High Royal Tea which came with a three tier tasting tray, tea, and a glass of champagne. The salmon, cucumber, and curry chicken sandwiches were amazing! All the scones were tasty and cooked perfectly and the last tier of chocolate pastries were divine. It is definitely a little pricey for high afternoon tea but I enjoyed the experience. read more

My classmate and I really enjoyed our "Afternoon Tea for Two" on Friday August 5th. The Pierre is beautiful and the Two E Bar/Lounge is just as classy. I bought the Groupon prior to our NYC trip since the Plaza was $95 a person for the December holidays and not their usual pricing, as an alternative. They were flexible and I was able to go on a whim today making a reservation 1.5 hours ahead for the last 6pm time they serve tea. They were accommodating when I said I'd be about 10-15 minutes late. Arrived and awkwardly stood by the hostess stand that is in the center of the rooms entrance for 3 minutes though it was clear we were waiting. Someone came to tell us we'd be helped with shortly. Another couple came up behind us. They then let us choose between two available table options which was nice. One was too centered to the entrance, the other was to the right but more private. Waited 5-7 minutes after getting the tea menu and seeing 3 servers around when I finally asked the passing hostess if I could get some service when she said she could take our order. I told her we had the Groupon which she was nice about- didn't know what to expect since I've never used one for food and could imagine some places turning up their nose. Tea came out first, they have a good selection. I got the Margaret -something and my boyfriend had some tropical one. The tower of treats came out- just like all the photos I've seen. Sandwiches were good, ate all of them- nothing mind-blowing but I wanted to see if we could get more, but not without a charge or something...the server brought out a menu but I wasn't interested since we were just having light snacks before the night. Devonshire cream isn't like the clotted cream you'll find that's thick like in the UK, for anyone on the hunt for that. Good variety of sweets- some tiramisu one, berry tarts, macarons, cookies, and other cute pastries. Maybe I had high hopes because I had my first afternoon tea in London this past summer at the Langham for $83 and loved every bit of it. I bought this Groupon for $99 for two and still didn't think it was worth it so I wouldn't pay normal pricing of $74 a person. The tax was $13 and I didn't tip a full 20% since I was checked on only once after the food came and service was lackluster. We are pretty casual when we dine or drink, but decided to stop by here on an evening to hang out a little. On the contrary to our previous assumptions, this lounge was so welcoming, friendly, and warm. All the staff was very nice to the customers, especially the manager, Brian, and the bartender, Paul. Brian was so attentive visiting all the tables and greeting to us and conversing with us. We felt so welcomed and enjoyed our drinks and snacks, and the live music performance there. We later learned that the scheduled performance had ended earlier, but the manager had the performer extend the performance as there were still a few more people walking into the lounge that was already and still filled with people enjoying the evening. The lounge full of people enjoyed the privilege of this extra music performance, thanks to the manager. Brian recommended me a drink that I've never had before which was delicious. My friend, who is quite picky about wine, also loved the wine that was recommended by Brian. Not only he is friendly and professional, his knowledge of food and drinks is vast. The place was accommodating when I couldn't make it to my 5:30PM Monday reservation. As long as I got there before 6PM I can still have the afternoon tea. I got a Groupon for the traditional after tea for 2 at $99 ($130 value) but even at $99 it's not worth it. For the service and the food served I would pay $50 max for 2. Nothing really stood out, the food was pretty bland and the tea was mediocre. The groupon cost around 45 dollars for sweet afternoon tea for 2.. I guess normal price would be 90 dollars.. The place is classy as it is located at the Upper East Side area.. You can see a lot of people walking in with dress and suit.. I was glad that I wasn't wearing flip flops walking in to a place like that.. For sweet afternoon tea.. It's the same as the traditional afternoon tea but excluding all the breads. I guess it's good because it's always too much for me in a late afternoon.. It includes: - 2 scones each - some other sweets - 2 macarons - some tarts - etc... We both each get a pot of tea. They have a wide selection of teas you can choose from.. If you want something deep, you can get the Earl Grey and other black teas, something fruity, there is strawberry and kiwi.. The service was excellent.. The tip to enjoy afternoon tea is to enjoy and chat.. which I always love doing it with my girl friend.. The reason why i took away 2 stars.. Reason 1.. It is too expensive, 90 dollars regular price which there is nothing too special about the desserts.. Reason 2.. Repeating reason 1.. Nothing too special about the desserts.. If you are into afternoon tea, you might notice that Two E Bar at the Pierre hotel appears on almost every "10 Best Afternoon Teas in NYC" list. For good reason. SAVORIESSS: They have some of the best savories I've ever had, and I've had more than a handful of afternoon teas spread across NY, HK, and London. Everything is miniature, which is wonderful because you essentially get bite-size tastes of everything. And because everything is miniature, they offer a lot of variety! I felt like a child in a candy store looking at these cute miniature sandwiches and trying to decide which one to eat next (I always try to save the best for last i.e. anything with salmon or caviar). SWEETS (eh): While they do offer plenty of savories, they offer even more sweets, which kind of throws the experience off balance in my book (or makes you yearn for the savories you started out with). Actually when I finished, I was so overloaded with the taste of sweets that all I wanted later was something more salty. I've never found afternoon tea sweets to be a highlight, and I did not find any of the sweets particularly memorable. Probably too sweet for my very Asian taste buds. SCONESSS: I did, however, enjoy the scones! I'm a sucker for "hot carbs" -- unfortunately these were more warm, edging on lukewarm, rather than hot. But they were perfectly baked with a crisp shell and fluffy inside, as many others have observed. TEAS: Now onto the tea. I made a bold choice to go with an off-menu item that I had read on Kathy's blog (see here: http://www.kathyylchan.com/2011/11/09/pierre-hotel-warm-sunrise-html/). Somehow anything with "Sunrise" in its name sounds delightful (except maybe the tequila variety), so I decided to order it even though I'm not big fan of chamomile or citrus drinks. OK, here's a big piece of advice: Never order something you don't like (a-duh, Elaine). Novelty got the best of me, but I was not a fan from the first taste. It felt like drinking sugar water... not to say it was too sweet (it wasn't), but there was just nothing glorious about it. I ended up calling for refills of my mom's Lung Ching green tea and sharing that with her instead. A few other notes: -- Only one bathroom, which could pose a problem for tea drinkers especially when the salon is busy/full -- It would be nice for them to provide warm towels to wipe your hands before you eat (these are "finger" foods after all, and there is only ONE bathroom per sex) -- I do also want to point out that this place seems to get kudos for excellent consistency! Literally ever picture of the afternoon tea dating back to years ago appears almost the same in terms of the selections.... it is quite pointless for me to add another identical picture to the mix. My husband and I went there for afternoon last Saturday (4/7). We made a reservation via Opentable and arrived at 3:30 pm. This lounge was not too big, but it was open and bright. The decor was on the elegant side, but not too luxurious (in a good way). The service was polite and attentive. We both had the Traditional Tea. The finger sandwiches, scones, and sweets were served on a 3-tier tray. Each item was very small, but I guess there were at least 12 different kinds of variety for each person. So there was still a lot of food! The pastries were not the super fancy type, but still delicate enough for an enjoyable experience. This place became very packed from 4 pm to 5 pm, with a lot of guests just popping in and having a drink. Overall it was a very relaxing and pleasant experience. I did go on Wednesday afternoon so that might be why everything was stale but 55 dollars for what I got was just not justifiable. I have had similar but not as extravagant experience in England and the tea service came with really amazing fresh pastries. For 55 dollar affair the sandwiches and pastries were just so bad. I think you can get a similar tasting sandwiches at Duane Reade refrigerated aisle. If 55 dollars for a great cup of tea is not much to you, go ahead the tea was excellent. We had royal tea today - what a treat! The Pierre is one of NY's grand dames, located just off of the east entrance of Central Park. The lobby (both entrances) is surprisingly small at the Pierre, though one of the salons off of the 5th Ave entrance is a Michelangelo dream - gorgeous. I wish this was my living room. The Two E Bar/Lounge is a gorgeous, sunken parlor with a golden, gilded bar at the center back of the room. Alas, you can't sit at the bar (no chairs or stools) which is perhaps what also makes it so visually striking. The room is fairly small and not crowded with tables, so you really feel like you are having drinks or tea with a select group of people. Check in was a bit odd, they seem almost under-staffed, perhaps due to the size. It took a while for anyone to even acknowledge the people waiting. Nonetheless, we were seated, and from there on it service was fairly good (though check in more at the beginning and then the end, no mid-way water refill). I felt at times like we were in a movie with people watching. We were seated behind this clearly patrician, ultra wealthy but under-stated NY family (parents, sons, daughters in law) having tea. They were pasty and very blue blood looking, uber expensive clothing but not trying to look pretentious - if anything trying to look understated. There was also the eccentric looking lady nearby who I overheard was an agent with her author. On to the food. We love tea service and frequent The Plaza, Bergdorf, Four Seasons in LA, etc. The tea foods here are seriously among the best, especially the sandwiches and crumpets with accompaniments. The waiter also explained what everything was on the tray, from the mini caviar sandwich to the chicken curry cups to what flavors the macaroons were. Especially of note are the crumpets - crispy on the outside but moist and crumbly on the inside - and served with three pots of spread - clotted cream, lemon curd and rapsberry jam. OMG. I was stuffed after these! The lowest tray of desserts were good, though not mind blowing (compared to other equally good tea services). We struggled to finish these, and I was okay with that because we were completely satiated with everything else. I still slightly prefer Bergdorfs because the room is high up and overlooks Central Park, and you have some equally fun people watching, though the food here certainly one-ups BG, except for the tea. BG uses Damman Freres and that tea is THE BEST. The tea at the Pierre was good, but it didn't surpass DF at BG. Overall, I think the current 3.5 stars is right on. With a few fixes to the service experience this place can easily soar to 4 or more stars, IMO. read more

The macarons were good actually. My favorite pastry was the cranberry scone and the yummy fruit jams. The raspberry mini tarts were soo good. I actually did not want to look at another pastry after that because there was so many. The Pierre blend is really really good. Recommended selection. our other selection was the Lahpsong? tea. I didn't really like it, it was smoked black tea leaves. I felt like I was drinking smoked wood chips. The waiter was very friendly and came to fill our tea with water very frequently. Three stars would have been too generous here. If I'd paid full price for this Tea, I would have given it one star. Fortunately, I used a Groupon which bought the price down to about $30.00 per person, not including tax and tip. At $55.00 per person, it is simply not worth it. The tea selection is fabulous and you get a nice sized pot which is, well, a requirement at tea right? The tea sandwiches were extremely small, more like savory petit fours, rather than sandwiches. Yes, I understand that tea is supposed to be a light savory snack accompanied by scones and sweet confections, but I've had tea at some of the finer tea houses in the world (Plaza, Ritz, Fortnum & Mason) and these sandwiches were woefully inadequate. The flavors were bland and many tasted like they were prepared well in advance of service. The scones were lovely and the confections were sweet, but lacked any distinct flavors of their own, rather, they were different decorations of the same thing. The abject failure here was in the service. Everyone was indeed polite, but the service was slow. We waited at the entrance of the room far too long before being acknowledged or being seated. We saw the waiter two times, once placing the order and once when he checked on us. We had to waive him down for the check. Speaking of the check, he reminded us that tax and tip were not included in our prepayment and circled the menu price on which to base the tip. Now, that is fair IF and only IF, the service was befitting such an haute establishment as the Pierrre. Sadly, it was not, and speaking of sad, the room itself was a drab beige that lacked any life at all. The chairs looked nice but if you're anything over 5' 3", you're going to hit your knees on the table. This tea service was clearly an after thought; a poor attempt to fill an empty bar between 2 and 6 PM until the well healed come in for their pre-dinner drinks. My husband and I went to the Pierre for afternoon tea on a Monday. We loved it. The service was excellent - just enough attention, and very gracious. The classical music was quite soothing. They brought out mini bottles of Pommery Pop champagne, which were completely flat. They apologized and replaced them immediately with Nicholas Feuillate, filled to the brim of the glass. I'm not a huge fan of Harney & Son tea, but the Assam was actually quite nice. The amount of food was more generous than most afternoon tea offerings. The top tier sandwiches were the best part, almost too beautiful to eat, but too delicious not to (mini caviar blinis, traditional cucumber, chicken curry, smoked salmon, and several others). The scones on the second tier were crispy on the outside and warm and flaky on the inside. They were delicious with the clotted cream and jam. (I judge a tea by its scones, and these ones were excellent.) Last, but not least, was the final tier of tiny pastries. They looked like little jewels (sapphire blueberry tarts, ruby raspberry tarts, fluffy white diamond meringue on a teensy lemon tart). Just enough chocolate in the mix. We understand that the chef changes the menu offerings with the seasons, so you might find different sandwiches or tarts at different times of year. To be honest, we both agreed that a second plate of the sandwiches would have been perfectly in order, except for the fact that we couldn't think of eating another bite.
