We stopped by the outdoor window of Shade to grab a crepe. I was appalled by the prices for a grab and go dessert. Paris spoiled me for their low costs. A $12 crepe isn't going to bring a lot of business in but hey, I was craving one so I coughed up the money. I was disappointed at first when I asked for Nutella, coconut, and extra Nutella as my three toppings. The man was super stingy with the Nutella. In fact, his method on adding toppings was ridiculous. He started with the dry coconut first and then DRIZZLED Nutella. I told him I was not impressed and requested more Nutella. (In Paris, they take a spatula and spread a thick layer of Nutella. You never have to correct them) After adding a good amount of Nutella, I would say it made for a decent crepe. It wasn't travel friendly and required us to sit outside and eat it. It did the job. The spot has a lot of potential and I fe they'd attract more customers outside if they'd lower their prices. read more

Came here on a whim while walking through the city. Came in and was immediately greeted by Sarah the bartender who provided exceptional service from start to finish. There were two gentlemen at the bar to our right that had the perfect temperament for someone you'd want at the bar with you that you didn't know -- quiet but clearly immersed in their conversation. There's a hell of a lot of bars and restaurants in the Village, surely enough that you could go out every night for a year and still not have made it to every single one. There's something about Shade that would beg a repeat visit. My husband and I were looking to have a drink before heading home on the train and we had walked by Shade once on our way to another bar. We didn't love the bar we had landed at, so after a quick drink and came back to Shade. It had left an impression on the first pass, because it looked so inviting, the quintessential old school Greenwich Village bar/cafe (think: Cafe Reggio). It did not disappoint! The bartender/server (she was the only person working on this rainy chilly late spring Sunday evening) was so welcoming and down to earth. Kind of a rarity in Manhattan, when so many places are all about the "you're lucky if we can find space for you to sit down and order a 30 dollar cocktail," 'tude. It was refreshing. Plenty of regulars at the bar and I overheard the bartender greet a tourist who was having his last evening in town as if he were family, clearly having made Shade his regular haunt during his stay. We sat and ordered not one but two rounds. There's a fair amount of wines by the glass (mini splits of Prosecco!) and beers, too. It's a corner spot, so perfect for people watching from the tables that border all the huge windows. Will definitely return next time we're in the Village. read more

Sullivan street corner bar. Very small but quaint and rustic looking. ENTRANCE - open door with curtains is interesting. OUTSIDE - like all the places they have taken up the sidewalk and parking spots with tables so challenging to negotiate the entrance on a busy street. LOOK - their window to the street totally opens up. So nice ventilation. GREETING - the bar tender was extremely pleasant and very nice. We sat at the small bar. No more than 8 seats. FOOD - can't comment but definitely your pub and grub fare. ASSESSMENT- this is most likely an NYU hang out at night. BAR REVIEW - not a full bar but basic options are covered. Wine choices are limited and fair at best. I tried their Pino noir it was slightly below average but only $11 (you get what you pay for) - lol read more

Wonderful cafe with a horribly racist patron. Shade Bar was the perfect place to end our girls day, my two friends and myself decided to get a crepe and catch up in the outdoor dining area. The crepe was delicious, hot, and perfectly chewy and the servers were very kind! However, our experience took a turn for the worse when an older woman walks in to sit and order a cup of tea. This woman seemed to be a regular, as she not-so-politely ordered the waitress to turn on the heat. Anyways, being rude to waitstaff is strike number one in my book. But the antics do not stop here.... As my friends and I were conversing about our days, the same woman yells from across the outdoor dining area for us to be quiet, huffed and puffed, and said a few other choice words. My friends and I, stunned at this extremely out of pocket remark, stayed a few more minutes and decided to leave because this woman was very clearly not well in the head. As we got up to go, I said to the woman "that was not kind of you to speak to us like that, that was uncalled for. I'll be hoping you have a better day" to which she replied "oh yeah? Well I'll be praying for you all to LEAVE THIS COUNTRY AND GO BACK TO WHERE YOU CAME FROM" screaming at my friends and I. My friend promptly went inside to tell the staff, and I'm not sure what was done from that point on, but I feel horribly sorry for the waitstaff that needed to deal with her rude personality. This woman needs to realize that she is sitting in one of the most diverse cities in the world, and if she doesn't like it then she can leave. I hope that if you decide to visit this cute little cafe on a Sunday afternoon, that you do not run into this miserable, rude, and racist woman. read more

I've been going to shade since I was 21. I can't believe it's nearly been ten years. One of the first places I explored my love of cocktails. The crowd here tends to lean older, and is usually filled with regulars. The bartenders are nice enough-- no bullshit and occasionally will crack a smile if you're not a regular. I'm not one to get upset about that. If you can take my drink order and get it out fast. I'm glad. They have a good sizeable bar and menu. You can customise their cocktails as well. Always appreciated. The atmosphere of the place is very chill. The bartender picks the music and their vibe is usually very mellow. It's dark and oaky. If you're looking for a casual date place. This is great. They've been lovely during COVID. One meal per table. And reasonable price for their food, which is pretty good. They had a kitchen before Covid so I hope they're doing well. It was cold outside and I stopped in for a birthday party of someone I know. Lorrie, the bartender, took excellent care of me. She had friends there she was talking to but still I didn't wait a second before she came over and saw what I needed. She made me an amazing mulled cider wine that was so excellent and warming that I had a second before the party even started (I'm a lightweight and rarely have 2 drinks in a night). Stellar vibe! Shade is a really quaint, hole-in-the-wall place tucked away just off NYU's campus. We stopped by for a quick drink right before a comedy show. I really loved the aesthetic. It seemed very dim and eclectic and just simply interesting. It was the kind of place that you could go at any time of day or night and get a drink or ten. They also aRe apparently big on crepes? Like I said, eclectic. But in a good way. I got the Moscow mule and my partner got a Hendricks and Lemonade. They were both on special and the prices were pretty good considering the size of the drinks and the shelf of liquor used. I was not disappointed in that regard at all. This is the ideal spot for a nightcap. Remember what nightcaps are? That's what Dean Martin used to say in a red silk smoking jacket in one of his cheesy 1960's comedies. It was basically a euphemism for an anticipated roll in the hay with some unsuspecting starlet who turned out to be a virgin from his hometown. That was probably Shirley MacLaine at her perky pixie peak. I don't think anybody uses that archaic term anymore, but it would fit here. I mean the libation part of the term, not the roll in the hay, as they serve these decadent $12.50 Espresso Martinis that made me feel like Lee Remick just before booze took over her life and her looks in "The Days of Wine and Roses". Too many baby boomer movie references? Sorry... My colleague Stephanie suggested coming to her favorite watering hole after our wonderful dinner at the Lion nearby. She lives just up the block, so it was the perfect place for us to chill and chat about life, work and all points in between. The space is small and low-key, and on a weeknight around 9PM, pretty darn quiet with only a few customers chatting up the bartender at the back-lit bar. We sat at a table for two, and Stephanie knew to order those martinis. Just sweet enough with an eventual horse kick. OK, we had two rounds, we just couldn't help it. Like I said, I was Lee Remick, so she must have been Jack Lemmon. I thought I'd be up all night, but the alcohol must have burned off the caffeine...that's my story and I'm sitcking to it. Customer service is attentive although somewhat insufficient for only one waitress for the whole bar. A full-service bar for bar tenders awaiting to conjure concoctions as per requests of patrons. My brie sandwich of tomato and garlic with the house specialty of Cherry Cosmopolitan warmed my heart for a happy ending to a rejuvenating night among prolific artists. The waitress also asked us if we wanted separate checks, and although we didn't take her up on 8 separate checks it was nice if her to offer. Came here for a drink with friends on a Thursday mid afternoon and we were 6 of about 12 people in there which was nice if you are looking for a little more mellow daytime vibe. It is cozy, has a warm aesthetic, and our server/bartender was very nice and welcoming. I got a hot toddy and enjoyed it. Two of my friends who got margaritas mentioned that it was not very good, though. Maybe leave those to the bartenders at Mexican restaurants. OK they sure do stay true to their name, shade. It was pitch black, I could only see a trianglular crepe atop my white circle of a plate. I was at times confused whether I forked up a mushroom or a strawberry. (No, I didn't order these together in 1 crepe because that would be nasty.) That aside, the crepes tasted alright. I had been craving those Japanese conical crepes, but those are a rare find nowadays (if you know of where I can get 1 please message me); Shade kind of did the job. I came across this place on my way to the NYU Skirball Center for a friend's fashion show. The words "Crepes To Go" immediately drew my attention.. haha. I haven't tried eating inside the restaurant but I've been to the take-out window right next to it, twice already and I'm planning to go back soon and try more combinations! They have dessert and savory crepes!! I love that they have soo many ingredients to choose from. A variety of cheeses, meats (bacon ftw!), chocolate, fruit, whipped cream, nuts, you name it - they most likely have it! They make it right in front of you on a heating plate (?) so you can see the entire cooking process. You get a choice of 3 things to put inside the crepe :) I've tried both dessert and savory crepes. My first time, I shared a Swiss Cheese, Onion, and Mushroom crepe with a friend in Washington Sq Park. It was SO good!! I wanted to eat the whole thing but it was just too big and filling. They give you the right amount of ingredients so that the crepe isn't overflowing but you're also not wishing for more. My second time, I shared a Banana, Nutella, and Hazelnut crepe with another friend in Washington Sq Park (since its so close to this place). MAN OH MAN. This was even better than the savory one. I think crepes are better off in dessert form, but I'm still feening to try a breakfast crepe from them with ham, eggs and cheese! The prices are worth it because the crepes from here are pretty darn good and really quickly made! The service can be kinda annoying sometimes bc the people who make it are mexican and have a hard time calculating change in their heads and speaking good english (not being racist here, it's the truth!)
