An estimate is not labor, but rather an approximate or tentative judgment about what conditions a worker will encounter and, additionally for parts that may be needed...in other words, an assessment for a potential job, no labor, work or exertion at this juncture. An employee of a company (let's say plumbing) arrives, to provide an estimate, per your request. Said employee jots down some notes -- no labor involved. Said employee then proceeds to get on a stepladder to take a quick peekaboo at an attic (the said person didn't actually go IN the attic, still assessing, and no labor or work. After a few minutes, said person immediately heads out to his truck, only to return with a hefty bill of $195 for w h a t?? you might ask. When will I get the estimate? It could be a very BIG surprise for the unsuspecting customer, but let's face it, it sure seems like working at some places can be quite lucrative because they don't actually provide an estimate--just a bill for the drive to your home. A great gig if one can get away with it. Of course, the employee does not do one bit of actual work, nor is he expected to work. You merely made a call to the company requesting an estimate so you know what the job and the cost will entail if you should choose to hire them. You're out $195 with no estimate. It's a 100% win for this company. Too bad for you, silly customer. An innocent person might suspect that this is kind of a shady practice (oops, saying shady - --that wasn't nice ---sorry). To N O T notify people to expect a $195 fee at the time of the initial call for Nothing-- one might wonder who does that? They should at least notify you that they plan on doing nothing when they arrive & hand you a bill for nothing. Does that seem wrong to you? Just asking. Let's face it, businesses are free to charge as much as they can possibly grab from unsuspecting people. Right??! Yep, and most people have a tendency to expect ... oh, who knows, maybe, professionalism, integrity, credibility & trustworthiness. Hmm, wondering if this applies to, let's say possibly, any given plumbing business that might come to mind??? Any thoughts?? Respectfully P.S. His work was solid. He was professional and done quickly. My husband and I were so grateful! Because the work had been so good on the handrails, we talked to him about a couple of other odd jobs and our new home he installed a pantry, medicine cabinet, and was honest with us about the fact we would not be able to install a garbage disposal. Making the wrong decision on a contractor can not only cost you monetarily, but can have a heavy price if the work is done cheaply or by cutting corners. This being said, roofing contractors have gotten a bad name over the last decade or so due to the prevalence of "storm chasers", or contractors that travel around, quick to promise new roofing and exteriors fully paid for by insurance and without a cost to the homeowner. There are contractors who lack integrity and honesty, and will pull any string available to get you to sign for subpar workmanship and materials, while you pay the premium. Enter Responsive Roofing. My first encounter with Ron was several years ago, when I had been in my home for a few years. At the time, I was worried about the age of my roof and had called his company to come inspect it. To my surprise, Ron told me that while my roof was older, it still had some time on it and that he would suggest coming back in the next 3-5 years to check again. I've gotta admit, I was impressed, if not a little shocked. He didn't try to use fear tactics, or sell me on something I didn't need. He spoke honestly, and gave me an understanding of the true situation and timeline I was looking at. As you can guess, this left an impression on me. Fast forward to summer of 2025. Remembering my encounter with Ron several years back, I again called him to inspect my roof and give me his fair opinion. He of course did exactly that. It was time to move forward with our project. We decided to add on improved shingles and venting, new gutters, and some Hardie Board siding to replace wood paneling that was deteriorated on the front of our house. Such a large purchase is nerve wracking, to say the least. But I cannot stress enough how absolutely ACCURATE the name of this business is. "Responsive Roofing" is not just a name. It encompasses every aspect of how Ron runs his business. From promptly answering every possible question I could have, to providing estimates and brainstorming solutions for what we wanted to accomplish, I could not be more impressed. His crews were friendly and polite, and left not a trace that they were here each day. Ron was on the job site, and was so proactive in protecting our landscaping and house exterior so that we never had to worry that something would go wrong. The finished work (see pictures) was impeccable. Every detail was perfect, and the value of our home and increase in curb appeal was everything we could have wanted in this project. Lastly, I learned SO much from Ron. It is evident that it is important to him to make sure his clients understand exactly what they are purchasing, as well as the function of each part. At no part in this process did I stress that I had made the wrong decision because Ron's responsiveness and attention to detail was so strong that I never needed to. Today, as I admire my home every time I pull into the driveway, I am so thankful that I chose Responsive Roofing. I sincerely hope that anyone in need of roofing, siding, or exterior work will consider them as well. You won't regret it!
